This suggestion comes at the simplistic idea that the game would be a lot more enjoyable if it was played for the sake of being a fun game.

“Loot” has taken front center over story, over success, over community, over friendliness, over everything! Honestly, it needs to stop.

No excuses from the players about “it’s designed that way”, or “it’s the dev’s fault”, or “who cares” or whatever excuse can be thrown at it. Know how’s fault it really it? The players; the individuals who voluntarily choose to purposely fail events, to repeatedly farm, to trash talk other players, and to obsess about getting more coin per hour (or whatever else they obsess about).

So, back to my original suggestion: Removing loot drops from the entire game, and making everything “skin only”. It’ll probably never happen in a million years, but it’s a dang good way to fix the people problem. Because the players just wont’ change….

Ain’t nobody got time to remove white/grey/blue “loot” from gw2.

Fact: every Thief tells you to “l2p” when the subject is to nerf stealth.

Actualy some things works great on paper but not in real. One of main reason why I bought this game was “skin only” farm. In reality people simply need something to looking for and only skins simply arent enough. People hate gear progress but game without any kind of progression – just for fun – also isnt right way (at least for RPG)

Maybe if they add some skin collection like PvP locker where you can actualy see your progress. I played gw1 so long because of HoM. Here I havent that show of feeling even with 4 legendaries and cool looking armor.

I agree with ya op I could do without the gear just playing content for fun, unfortunately I like to play all content to some extent which requires I have to hunt the top tier of gear.
In my opinion they should add a new type of gear for those who don’t want to grind out new tiers all the time that just scales like legendary but doesn’t require you to grind like crazy to get, but sadly I think the people who want the grind in the game would be strongly against it cause they don’t seem to want people to be able to have fun without having to put in a bunch of work first.

Because the players just wont’ change….

This about sums it up.

Unfortunately for your idea, it also means that if you were to remove all loot from the game, 99% of players would leave for another MMO, thus destroying gw2 and the anet company as a whole.

All this suggestion is, is another end to the extreme. Look at most modern games, loot or rewards in some form are a staple part of it. Its just MMO players take it to one extreme more than any other type of gamer. Do yourself a favour and ignore those bad parts of the community, because opposing them like this only makes you as extreme, yet on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Actually, I would love to see an RPG where everything was depending on YOUR skills and ability to handle situations in the game. No grind, whatsoever. All skins available to everyone would put more focus on peoples ability to combine different skins and colors to make a great identity – rather than 3,000,000 people who run around in expensive armor parts that looks TRASH together.

Remove all grind elements, and re-think the way rewards are given. There are other means of rewarding players than giving them a piece of armor for their effort.

Unfortunately, there aren’t enough hours in the day to produce content at the same rate it’s consumed. Short of ANet implementing:

  • Randomly generated content
  • Player generated content
  • Sandbox elements

There’s always going to be a finite amount the can develop. Thus, grinding.

Grind (both time and resource requirements) is more or less used to buy time while devs produce content. Removing grind totally would result in a low populated game – the ones who are skilled enough to do the content will have done it with nothing to keep them playing, and the ‘I want it now’ crowd will stop playing.

However, that’s not to say that challenging content (alongside context to the ‘grind’) can’t be used to a) gate certain rewards and b) make ‘grind’ (or at least certain parts of it) engaging.

it would probably be a step in the direction they were originally all about in the first place which would mean no they wouldn’t want to do it.

It would also solve alot of problems in the game I agree if all resources etc were all made accountbound and loot was taken out especially the requirement of precursors which has already been exploited to the Nth degree.

Heck I know I’d enjoyed the game more if I didn’t have to worry about gold every second of game time (every time they changed something and I had to completely rebuild by character from the ground up for example) or broke the entire class which forces people to try to figure out a setup that works well.

Actually that’s how CoH was in the beginning, the concept was pretty good. But that’s not how this game was designed, and seriously doubt they would change it. Google around for CCP EVE Online – Greed is Good. hehehe. Buddie, it all revolves around the RMT shop I’m hear to tell you. At least increasingly so as time goes by. Not even protests will change that here. Earning gold = buying gems = gem prices up = people RMT to buy gems to sell for gold. Anet who is not charging a sub, not even releasing paid expansions yet, benefit from players farming and RMT exchange transactions. You don’t even trade gems straight across in exchange, fill out the box to buy then fill out the box to sell, notice the big difference hehehe. Removing loot drops? Not going to happen.

Well say it dropped skills, power-ups, account bound gear or bound gear earned from tokens. Then game design focused on pure fun-factor rather than on driving RMT as part of it.

I mean wasn’t that part of why the recent living story – was more slanted towards zerg farming? Get more people involved in gold farming? It’s a market manipulation to move gems for a short period. How do you milk a cow the old fashioned way? You grab that utter and control it in spurts (so I’ve seen), the cow lives to milk another day as opposed to gutting it for it’s milk.

But yeah, if you removed it and left nothing, people would quit, which shows the design of pure fun-factor vs doing it to just buy gems etc (two extremes at least). But not all parts of the game are like that, and some reward is obviously a necessity here. This isn’t minecraft after all.

Well, that wasn’t directed at the OP, we both know what he meant, especially as I put it with my last line mentioning minecraft which the OP seems to be more in thought. Well yeah, it’s something in general that I saw from launch day of CoH. Early on that game wasn’t about loot, very little at least. Then of course they changed that, then even went to an f2p model that failed. But even CoH, it wasn’t purely a new concept, it goes back to some MUD games to some degree, the grandfather of mmo’s.

This. Bold/highlighted the bit that resonates with me much more than anything else.

Something iv been saying since beta – Sandbox gameplay is alot more valuable than developers give it credit for. This is why I know ALOT of people in game that only stick around for WvW. When you introduce mechanics that make players the primary way of generating content, the longevity of the game is multiplied by the thousands and almost completely removes the feeling of grind (in which every MMO can be perceived to be in some form).
Unfortunately alot of players are put off by hardcore sandbox (like EVE), so games heavy in this fill a niche and nothing more…. If anet began to introduce elements for the endgame crowd, without going hardcore FFA or something equally as drastic, youd see alot more players who are at 80 and actually happy to be there.

I play for fun. Loot has never been y main incentive to do something, it would frel like working >_<.

I also know that a huge part of the playerbase has only one goal, loot.

I will neer undertand them, no matter how hard i try.

That said, removing loot is a horrible idea because the economy would be destroyed and we would have no way of getting gear, which is used to make new builds, which is fun for me >_<. I currently have 4 sets and plan to get 2 more :o. Inventory space is a peoblem though :C.
