Support to DirectX11 / Legendary Weapons
I also would like to see DX11 support, are there any dx9 based comps that can actually run GW2 on a decent setting??
Guys there is this awesome new MMO that simply pushes the boat out with the latest technology.
It’s, wait for it ………….
Guiildwars2 complete with the massively innovative DX9 drum roll
Yeah right, it really exhausts my stupidly expensive spanking gaming system.
Saying that the gfx is awesome but really, come on Anet, DX9?
What features of DX11, specifically, do you feel that GW2 should be taking advantage of?

Textures would be the only thing I could think of.
Oh, and lightning. And shadows. And volume. . .
Wow… rocks and shadows… amazing.
DX11 is known to actually improve perfomance and FPS of cards taht support it to by the way.
Look at gaming benchmarks for games and MMO’s that both have DX9 and 11 and look at the side by sides in terms of performance.
Yes I know WoW is 7 years old but when using their DX11 api my performance jumps up a ton. Read the benchmarks done on this as well comparing DX9 and DX11 in wow.
Alos WoW is a CPU intensive game as well like GW2 (thats why many places still use it as a benchmark for CPU intensive gaming)
So regardless of more pretty effects…DX11 API on its own will increase performance.
I agree. I’m not too worried about prettier effects (though I certainly won’t scoff at them; that screenshot linked above is an impressive comparison) but I -do- care about performance and DX11 can yield drastically better performance.
“Wow… rocks and shadows… amazing.”
Why not go back to snes graphics? Wow 3d. . .
Bear in mind that most of the people still use graphics cards that support dx 9.0
(like 9800gt which is most commonyl used card atm). Anet policy was to make this game available for the widest audience. Do you get it? It’s that simple.
oh, I almopst forgot, here’s official word from A-Net. And next time before you start crying about something make sure you have checked A-Net facebook, reddit, or gw2 site. Thank you.
“For those of you who have been asking about DX11 support for Guild Wars 2, our goal with GW2 has always been to provide a gorgeous fantasy world while at the same time running on a wide range of gaming PCs.
Focusing on DX9 allows us to do this, as it’s a much wider supported graphics API than DX11 is and we wanted our game to reach as many of our fans as possible.
We will be evaluating supporting DX11 post launch."

It might not exhaust yours, but other players might not have the luxury of having a high-end system.
Not to mention Windows XP doesn’t support DX11.
However, they said they’d look into implementing it if there was enough demand.

OMG the fanboyz will roast me for this but erm, well, erm, Blizzard support DX9, DX10 and DX11 in WoW.
Supporting something and actually using its features are two different things
Exactly, just because you have a machine capable of running DX11 doesn’t mean the game actually uses any of those features. Guild Wars 2 will run fine on a machine with DX11, so in that sense, it’s supported.
Right now i’m imagining Anet has bigger fish to fry than getting the DX10 implementation they talked about before release. I’ve not actually seen anything about them using DX11 though.
Supporting something and actually using its features are two different things
If your card supports DX11 and you enable it in the game options, hey presto WoW uses DX11. If your card does not support DX11, you don’t enable it and hey presto, WoW does not use DX11. If your card supports DX11 and you do not enable DX11 in the game options, then hey presto WoW does not use DX11.
WoW is not the only game that operates like this, it’s just one of many.
At any rate I’m not slagging Anet off for not using DX11, I’m just saying Anet please use DX11 for those of that can use it. which as far as I am aware, I am entitled to ask for
I did actually say in my original reply that the gfx was awesome even at DX9 but I would really like the performance benefits of DX11 not the extra shiny gfx although they would be nice too :P

With DX11 we could use MSAA instead of FXAA or Supersampling. GW2 uses deferred lightning, so MSAA is not possible with DX9. Only DX11 supports defferred lightning + MSAA.

But they didn’t straight away.
Besides, they’ve already said if it’s viable they’ll implement it. The thing is, it takes time and resources to implement, and if only, say, 10% of the players are using it, then what’s the point in diverting resources that could be used to improve the current engine?
Hence, why they’re checking where or not it’s worth making it a priority.

46% of the gamers have a DX11 GPU
DX11 offers many features that could boost game performance even on systems running dx9 and 10 level hardware(btw, the 9800gt is a dx10 card not dx9)
the only real reason anet would stick with 9 is to sell the game to xp users who likely have systems that can barely run the game(or the very small minority of high end system owners who are clinging to xp because they dont like change)
they could be planning a console port as rumours suggest, but, I dont see a current gen consol playing this game worth a kitten when even high end rigs with K series and X series cpu’s and dual gpu cards are having issues…..
dx11 offers things like driver multithreading that can boost performance drastically.
dx9 requires that all game data stored in video ram also be mirrored in system ram, dx10 and 11 dont.
dx9 with deferred lighting precludes the possibility of true AA support, hence the use of much inferior FXAA
if your ead up on dx11, theres really ZERO downside to offering a dx11 code path if done properly you can even use that codepath on dx9 and 10 hardware, it will just disable those features the card/system dont support.
it really is rather stupid in this day and age to cater to XP users when most of them wont really be able to run the game in its current state of optimization(pathetic)…..
I really wish they would put some time and effort into supporting a modern API rather then one made in 2002……yes dx9 first came out in 2002(10 years ago) and anet hasnt moved past it yet…..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX#Releases
dont you find it a bit stupid that we are STILL running games in 2012 using an API that came out in 2002?
why not just use dx7 or 8, since that would open the game up to even more people, granted most wouldnt be able to run it because their cpu couldnt cope, but they could buy it and watch a slideshow……
sorry, but anets excuse to not use a modern API sticks as bad as their excuse to not add an FOV slider……

the 9800gt is a dx10 card, and a system using one and running vista or 7 could still benefit from other dx11 api advancements just not d3d11 features.
I really think they went dx9 because its what the xbox360 supports and its the easiest modern API to port to console at the moment, the problem is, the 360 wont have the cpu or gpu power to play this game at 1080p…..hell some systems with 2500k/2600k and high end dual gpu cards arent able to get playable fps in DE’s and WvWvW…..
anybody still on XP is either running a system that really isnt going to work well with this game, or is clinging to XP because they dont like change(or they are to cheep to buy a license…..a 3 pack is under 100bucks….so thats no excuse anymore)

shhh you will upset the people who are still using 9800gt’s
oh yeah, and no this game dosnt support all dx9 cards, anything pre shader 3.0 wont work, so that leaves out all the people running x800 and lower cards……:P

I’m not seeing the issue for the complainers.
If there’s demand for it and it’s viable for them to put it in, they’ll work on implementing it, which is what they’ve said.
It’s as simple as that.

Blizz didnt straight away cause WoW is old….one would think in the year 2012 (almost 2013) ANet would have added DX11 as a default.
Same with a 64bit client.

Plus adding a gfx api to an existing game, as Blizzard did, is a lot harder than coding it in at the start
