you’ll have to look through that thread to really see it, but Arenanet responded to someone stating they are gamers as well and understand a “slip of the tounge” and chances are they will not suspend for that.

Thanks for that! That’s what I thought. I find it would be a lot of work to suspend every player who slipped up.

I’ve seen players doing nothing but swearing in map chat in town all day, just to annoy other players. I have no problem with such players being banned from the game. It was a common problem in GW1, and Anet was very quick to respond to it. I remember reporting a player for swearing in Kamadan all day (and many other players also reported the same player), and within 15 minutes, this happened:

(Banned!)

So I’m sure, as with GW1, they will look at it on a case by case basis. I don’t think you’ll be banned for dropping an f-bomb in the game every now and then. But if you’re the kind of player who stands in an outpost all day, swearing loudly for no reason, and yelling racial slurs…. yeah, you’ll get banned for that.

I think penalizing players who use certain language and phrases is beyond idiotic. Yes, you have implemented a filter into the game, therefor it’s up to the individual whether or not they want it on. If you didn’t want people to swear then why not just keep the profanity filter on permanently and remove the ability to turn it off. The whole idea of having a profanity toggle is incredibly hypocritical.

There are many levels of profanity. As I said above, if a player stands in Lion’s Arch all day, swearing in map chat none-stop, he deserves to be banned. A profanity filter is no excuse to act like a potty mouth and offend other players on purpose. If that is your goal in the game, then you should find another game to do that in.

Oh, and in the video you can see in the chat what that player was yelling all day. Tell me you wouldn’t want such a player banned instantly?

I do not understand how some people ’’like’’ to swear and even complain that they aren’t able to do it or get reported.
I assume everyone would hate if someone just kept swearing in map chat or at certain people (you in this situation).
Keep some dignity and politeness, self control and respect others…you can swear at your home as much as you wish, but spare the rest of the world from this.
I am really happy that ANet implemented this.

32 here, and I’m firmly with Iruwen. It’s not like you died, or did something stupid and said KITTEN. You typed it. Even for someone like myself, where I type far faster than I can talk, the process of typing something requires you thought about it first.

So, people deliberately polluting the chat with their filth should be looking forward to a ban – and I personally think the 72 hour first offense is far too lenient.

BatalliaShan, the filter is there as a measure of protection for those who don’t want to see such, against those who break the EULA/ToS they agreed to in the first place. Get this firmly in your head – you agreed to not curse in general chats in gw2 before you had the option to play. Bypassing the filter, or cursing with it on, are both violations of the ToS, and should result in an action.

well, well … well.

to sum up, here’s what i’ve seen so far, and i’m REALLY summing here:

1. players think they should be allowed to swear because it’s someone else’s problem if that someone else becomes offended
2. other players respond with things like — courtesy, respect, and so on
3. players in #1 then begin with “freedom of speech” ad nauseam

and then it goes back and forth and back and forth.

here’s the scoop, folk. you have as much right to swear as you want. if someone’s offended by it, THEY have as much right as THEY want to report you for it. finito.

now, here’s a clue, in case you haven’t figured it out — swearing doesn’t make you sound “all growed up” or anything else. it’s just an expletive thrown out there because you can. you wanna take that risk? cool. take it. but don’t whine and cry when others say, “hey, ya know? this TEEN-rated game doesn’t need that in it” and reports you.

oh, and for what it’s worth? i’ve dropped an f-bomb in /m a time or two, ya know, when i’ve gotten my buns royally kicked, or slipped off the edge of a cliff i shouldn’t have … and i’ve realized, each time it’s slipped, “oh, boy, hope i didn’t offend anyone!”

i’m willing to shoulder the risk, but i strive even more to be respectful, courteous — you know, all those grown-up things.

EDIT: on a side note, just something to consider — you can’t report someone for swearing. you CAN report them for being verbally abusive. there’s a difference.

I think it’s silly if somebody reports you for swearing, unless you’re acting like an idiot or insulting other players, and even then you should be notified by the system that this is your first offense, and if you repeat it you’ll get banned temporarily.

I wouldn’t like to see people throwing f-bombs in the main channel all the time, but if you feel offended, there’s a filter. I haven’t seen much swearing on the main channel, only in few parties after we got wiped in a dungeon, so, I don’t see the problem.

People always talk about freedom and never mention the responsibility that comes with it. Let’s face it, self centered people want to do what ever they want to do, when they want to do it, and how they want to do it because they are the only one that matters. The rest of the world can just put up with them because no one else matters.

People have twisted the freedom of speech from the constitution to mean what they want it to mean. It in no way guarantees that you can create a toxic cesspool of society everywhere you go.

I try and keep map chat on so that I can keep up with things and often it is fine, but there are times when it gets really awful and I turn it off. I’ll ask my friends, did you see what that jerk said? Their answer, no, I never have map chat on. And I do have the filter on. People get around it and not everything is filtered.

I’m glad ANET tries to keep chat clean. If they didn’t it would continue to deteriorate.

It’s a kitten conspiracy. Kittens gonna be kittens. All is vain!

I love how people pull the “I don’t have to use the word filter. You shouldn’t be cussing in the first place” excuse. Guess what, you have your own preference which means as much if not less than your opinion. You can’t force anyone to stop cussing. You can’t force anyone to do kitten. You can, however, be the more mature adult and ignore it or block it.

You can most definitely force people to stop cussing. Especially if they are misbehaving on purpose. After all, in the EULA players agreed to not act like jerks.

I don’t use the word filter, because it blocks swear words in every language, even in languages I don’t speak. Which means that if I have the word filter on, I might not even be able to say the word SEGA Dreamcast, without the word SEGA being censored, because apparently it is something rude in some language on the planet. (Saying Nintendo on the other hand, is perfectly fine)

Is it really that weird to ask people to behave a little? I’m not going to report someone for dropping an F-bomb. But if someone is cussing none stop in map chat, just to annoy other players, then good riddens.

It isn’t anything to ask anyone to stop cussing. It is, however, petty to report them because they said a few cuss words that were not directed towards anyone or anything like “kittening hell lol I fell off the cliff”.

Aside from the profanity filter there is the ability to block someone. You also have the ability to submit a ticket if you think the game censored a word that you know isn’t a cuss word and vise versa.

You have plenty of options to counter them, so there is no excuse to report them on the first usage.

I agree. But I’m pretty sure Anet evaluates these reports on a case by case basis. They won’t ban you for uttering one curse.

You also have the ability to submit a ticket if you think the game censored a word that you know isn’t a cuss word and vise versa.

No actually that would be pointless. SEGA for example is indeed a swear word in some language. So while it may not be a curse in my language, what would be the point of filing a support ticket for it? They are not going to change that, because it is a swear word. What Anet really should do, is make the filter language specific, instead of making it block swear words from every language on the planet.

You have plenty of options to counter them, so there is no excuse to report them on the first usage.

Yes I agree. But reporting people for deliberately swearing all day in Lion’s Arch is something I think people should definitely be reported for.

That is actually Dhuum, he is the lord of the Underworld that Grenth defeated, and then took his place. And yes, when someone was banned in GW1, Dhuum would literally appear in the outpost (or wherever that player was at that moment), and kill him.

There have even been players that got Dhuum-banned in the middle of a pvp match. It’s awesome.

We can’t force anyone to stop cussing… Anet can’t force enyone from cussing either… what Anet can do, however, is to force someone to stop cussing in their game. And from examples given on the legendary reddit thread that someone else linked, they won’t suspend you (because a ban is permanent) for a swear word here and there, everyone that asked why they were suspended had MUCH more serious behavior in the game that just a swear.

It’s just like it works in real life, I couldn’t stop you from swearing, for example, but I can make you leave my house if you’re swearing in front of my kid (actually, my father did that once with someone that was his superior at work at the time). Actually, I remember reading long time ago a post by anet (don’t remember if it was here, on reddit or other forums) that basically said that in public chats you should behave like you would on a high class restaurant or something like that, while guild and party chat would be more like a backyard BBQ, much more relaxed and easygoing on what can you say, and well (this is mine), other chat mediums (like teamspeak or mumble) would be like a private phone call, say whatever you want to say…

Self control is a wonderful thing. Even better than a chat filter. You should stop crying and use it.

The US constitution is a wonderful thing. You should stop crying that people have said something you choose to take offense to and move to a country where there is not free speech. Does nobody understand the absurdity of using the free speech of the internet to try to deny it to others. My family moved to USA for a reason and every USA citizen seems to not understand that censorship is not to hurt the person speaking but to remove from everyone else the power to take into consideration what is said. What man among us should have the power to say what you or I should or should not read? Who would you trust with such power? Perhaps it offends some that you type anything at all during the 5 times per day a religion commands you to pray to god. This should this speech be banned as well?
8^ ) <—- picture of a certain prophet who shall not be named. Maybe I should be banned now? Even killed some would say! As childish and silly as you can see these peoples offense to be you can understand your offense is just as silly to us. Grow the **** up and learn to live in a society with free speech instead of trying to destroy it.

Swearing has nothing to do with free speech. Free speech is about being able to say what you have to say, without being censored by the government. So you could say speak out against the government and not be penalized.

By the same token, hate speech IS a crime. Yelling fire in a crowded theater is a crime. Free speech doesn’t mean you can say anything.

In any event, rules on private property have nothing to do with free speech. Anet owns the game and sets the rules. Schools have rules too. Businesses have rules. If you verbally assault someone at work, or talk dirty to them, there are consequences.

The principle of free speech means you can talk about what you want to talk about, as long as you do it within the confines of the law. In Anet’s game, Anet makes the “law”.

It really is that simple.

As far as I know they just don’t want swearing in public chat channels.

Guild chat is mainly moderated by the guilds themselves, if they allow swearing in guild chat (as my guild does) then nothing can be done about it and if you don’t like it just find another guild.

I would assume party chat would go by the same rules in a way. It’s moderated by the players within it. If they do/n’t allow swearing you either conform to the group or leave and find another.
