Temporary game bans for forum misconduct
ban the username; it is the same for the forums, and the game…if you gather enough infractions here to justify a temporary or permanent ban, have it be applied to the account username, not many truely care if they can’t access the forums for a time, but if they are also restricted from the game for same duration, the consequenses have a little more meaning.
People shouldn’t have to be told to be civil, but with internet anononymity, people tend to behave in a manner with each other in ways they would never dream of doing in person. MMO forums in general are much worse than most. sadly
I admit, I have been negative towards the game, and how it has been handled lately, but I rarely ever insult someone else. What I have noticed is that people who insult others may get away scott-free as long as they are defending Guild Wars 2, while those who are more negative get infractions.
Example:
“This is an automated message. Your post in About Tech Support was infracted.
Your original post in About Tech Support:
+1
Did you lose anything?
Moderator Notes:
Please refrain from making posts that do not provide any meaningful contribution to the topic at hand.
The message was deleted.
If you believe you have received this infraction in error or wish to make an appeal, please send an e-mail to forums@arena.net.”
I’m almost positive ANet doesn’t want the game to have any community, those who slam other people for being kitten stupid, bad, noobs, don’t have their posts removed, but mine asking if so-in-so had lost any items after being hacked, is a bad thing?
This community has gone from the best ever, to the most vial I’ve seen in all my years gaming, this game has a far much worse community than WoW and LoL put together. Anet had built it to be better and it’s blown up in their faces, the entire game is slowly blowing up in their faces patch after patch, bug after bug, hack after hack. I’ve never even seen so many complaints ever!
They need to get on the ball here, why do I find the forum more interesting than the game? Why are there so many missing features in a AAA next-gen MMO? Every time ANet reloads, they shoot themselves in the foot, for every one post thanking ANet there is 200 more complaints.
ANet needs to be more open and communicate like they once did. They need to stop punishing players, and work on punishing exploiters. AND kitten ADD KEY CHAINS TO SECURITY – WHYWHYWHY WASN’T THIS ON RELEASE ? ? ? World of Warcraft, Mike O’Brian, botters, gold sellers, HACKING – this is a no-brainer!!! It’s just shows the the level of incompetence. Reading old, old posts this was even a problem with GW1, WHY REPETE IT?!
This is why we are outraged, I’d cut anet some slack if they were completely new to the industry, but this is just sad.
And yes, this post has everything to do with this topic.
If people are horrible to others in here, they will be horrible to others in map chat. They’ll get reported there too.
Absolutely not. Your actions here and your actions in the game are two completely separate things. Receiving a suspension from the game because of actions on the forums is absolutely unacceptable, especially given how easy it is to receive an infraction on these particular forums.
I thought this would be a suggestion to have this -not- happen, if it’s already occurring.
Aside from extreme cases like threats of violence, this is an asinine idea.

You might say that, but I read “I want free lease to insult people without fitting punishment!”
Because, frankly, who feels a temporary lack of forum access to be a proper punishment for unacceptable behavior? I don’t.
If you think this is bad go to the Starcraft 2 forums or worse yet, the LoL forums…those places are perfect examples of where a policy like this belongs because of how rude, irresponsible and uncaring the user base is.
Here, people generally keep it civil so I think this is total overkill for such a mild mannered community.
Now if everyone magically develops BM overnight and starts trolling non-stop…okay I’d be down for trying it.
The community around here can be rather pungent at times. The amount of people who come here and do nothing but spew bile at others, insult them and generally act with callous disregard for civil discussion is donwright galling.
I don’t think forum bans would cut it, since people persistently keep misbehaving (I will not name and blame, but there are at least half a dozen names that consistently pop up with rather shameful comments with no discussion value). When people persistently act that way towards other members of the community, IMNSHO they should be punished with a 24-72 hour ban from playing the game itself.
If that makes them miss an unique event, well, they’ll learn to act more civilly next time.
Lol, you haven’t been to many forums if you think this forum is bad. It is if anything overmoderated.
I don’t really see anyone saying anything that bad, a healthy debate and if it gets out of hand the thread is deleted, merged or the offenders infracted.
Seriously this forum is very civil compared to most MMOs. To ban the infractors in-game is WAY overreacting.
I just got a three day ban from the German forums for nothing, just because there is a score system in place that also punishes you for off topic posts, and several of the posts that were deleted were totally on topic, not insulting or anything. I can totally live with a temporary forum ban, but if people are also banned from the game, which I’m not totally against, this has to be an individual decision and based on at least three moderator votes and not based on arbitrariness and an intransparent score system.
I get irritated when other players want the game difficulty decreased to the level they want but I don’t think calling someone names is appropriate. We should be able to disagree but still show respect for others.
I think forum bands are ridiculous. Just put people who are nasty on ignore.
yeah deal with it. no ones making you listen to anyone. and news flash no one has the right not to be offended. you can ignore someone or troll them back or report them. everyone has a moment of troll.

I’m sorry that you read it that way, as that’s not the intent at all. I don’t expect free lease to insult anyone. In fact, I haven’t insulted anyone, and I’ve still been infracted for an “off-topic” post (it wasn’t) and “cross-posting” (again, it wasn’t).
I’m also sorry that you don’t feel it is a fitting punishment. I do. If I act out on the forums, I will be banned. If that behaviour carries over to the game, I will be banned. The two should never cross.

I’m against this, but before you make such (groundless?) accusations in my direction, lets have small background info here:
I have never had any infrictions on forums or any trouble with the staff, even though I post frequently on the forums. (Since BWE1)
Now, lets move on to a metaphor:
Banning people in game for their actions on the forums is like taking away your drivers license for shouting at a buss driver.
Someone might argue that you are likely to subject to road rage if you can’t even keep your calm in a buss and therefore are unsuitable behind the wheel…
but…
Doesn’t anyone feel that’s completely irrelevant and unjust punishment?
Just throw the guy out of the buss and see if he can behave on the next one. If he can’t don’t let him ride your company’s busses anymore.
People who can’t tend to call the opponent troll, scream something utterly incomprehensible
and finally result to personal insults.
