Tengu Species
Tengu is the race that most people seem to believe will be made playable in the future.
It would be nice if those gates to the Dominion of Winds or what its called would open at some point.
I was staring at that wall over the weekend…
Haha yeah I was there too. It is pretty big.
The Tengu were supposed to be a playable race, but were dropped. Character Art Team Lead Aaron Coberly talks about it in a small paragraph on p.62 in the “Making of Guild Wars 2” book that came with the CE. He says the Tengu are a race with appeal and potential. They had planned their city to be in the center where it is still in the game.
There is also some speculation of how the Tengu might have evolved/developed since GW – Factions. (different bird species)
On a personal note, the name “Tengu” always irritates me to no end. When I hear that name I think of Japanese demons with long noses that live on mountains. Quite scary and ugly, too, those demons.

A bit like the minotaur having been turned into a herd animal?

Yeah… but this is Tyria and not Japanese or Greek mythology so I learned to live with it. lol

I actually cried when I read this, they had the choice between tengu and instead they created an entirely new race, the race that was pure evil in GW1, and another race that looked like a large human with hair problems? I feel sick and drained now.
With any luck, once expansion time comes around we may find our options to include Tengu and dare I say, Kodan?

I keep voting my hope for them to be a playable race in the future, ever since I read that part in the Art Book about them. They have idle animations, a city center that opens out into a 1-15 zone. Not to mention they can make use of one of the areas of water around their location for their personal area.
Here’s to hoping it comes true.
Whoever it was that mentioned the name, I’m pretty sure the GW Tengu are inspired by the more bird-like depictions of the mythological one.

Actually there are two common depictions of Tengu, one being the feathered and bird headed variety. Some had wings, some didn’t. Some were shapeshifters and disguised themselves to walk among men. There is a character in the move 13 Assassins that is Tengu, just looks like a dirty mountain man at first…
