Sometimes, you’ve just got to go to the potty.
Or go to the fridge. Or take a quick stretch. Or answer the phone/door. Or otherwise be AFK for a couple quick minutes, where logging out and then back in again would be a hassle.
It can be HARD sometimes in this game to find a “safe” spot. Even in a seemingly quiet area, some joker can run by with a trail monsters following. Just like that, you’re dead when you return to your keyboard.
How about an /AFK emote? (different from setting your status to “Away” in the contacts menu.)
When you go /AFK your toon would sit down. As soon as you move them, they are no longer AFK. While AFK you are immune and do not draw aggro. When you leave the AFK state, monsters within your attack range are immune for a few seconds. While AFK you could manage your inventory, dye your armor, use the Trading Post, or anything else that doesn’t require movement… just like you can do now while in the “defeated” state.
You obviously can’t go AFK while in a fight. And shouldn’t be able to go AFK in WvWvW either… at least not in a keep / fort / tower etc. that could be captured.
There’s actually something like this already in the game: The Heart of the Mists.
You can teleport there from anywhere in the world for free from the PvP menu. Once you’re in Heart of the Mists, you can use the same button to send you right back to where you were.
Don’t go through the portal in Heart of the Mists because that will send you to Lion’s Arch regardless of where you entered from…though many would consider this an added benefit
But the lack of universal safety is part of what makes the world feel real.
I mean, with the way you wanted to implement it, you could go into Lone Post in Straits of Devastation, afk, watch the encampment get taken back by Risen and still be sitting around like nothing happened. And that’s dumb.
Buy a Hall of Monuments Portal Stone from Scornheart (in Hooligan’s Route) in Lions Arch. Once teleported to the Hall of Monuments your character is safe from harm. Leaving the HoM will also get you back to the place where you used the Portal Stone.
You can also just log out. Your character will log back into the same spot you left — unless you’re in WvW or an instance. Log out is instant, too. You can use it to train to a dangerous spot, log out to rinse agro & take a break, log back in and grab that (now) safe skill point. That’s a separate issue, though.
BTW, if you have 25 sigil stacks, it will be lost. That’s the one downside of all these methods and something that I think should be changed, though it should still be lost on transition from PvE to PvP.
