If players cannot control their spending in a game maybe they will learn to which will be a valuable teaching tool for real life. Someone with this lack of control would most likely take the money from the other bank anyway.
Since you used a real world example I will too. I carry a significant amount of my money in my checking account and take my check card with me everywhere I go. I go to many, many stores where I see many, many things I would like. Toss in Amazon, eBay and even the gem store and I’m surrounded by temptations. I practice self control, budgeting, and practical spending. I don’t go hog wild and start letting my money fly all over the place. I have never overdrawn my account, bounced a check, or gone broke.
There are very few valuable real life skills a person can gain from playing video games. This feature might add another one. Consider it a learning game of sorts. A player goes broke in a game, learns a lesson and there is a possibility, all be it slight, that might be a lesson to apply to real life as well.
Also there is an option to create a personal guild for a bank if someone really feels they cannot control their spending in a game. However, I don’t think you get a free toaster when you open a new guild bank account.

Deathdealers, I completely agree with you. Unfortunately, we get people that tell us we should learn more self control, look on it as a life lesson, and Oh yeah! you can create a guild to bank your gold into if you really really want to.
If I wanted to make a guild, I would. I do not. Besides that, it takes time not repping your current guild to get it to where you can purchase that upgrade with influence. Then more time for the bank to get built. Oh wait! I can speed up the guild bank getting built! How? Why, by spending more gold, of course. Seems a bit overkill and counterproductive to me.
To go back to the real life scenario, here is how I manage my finances IRL. I carry a small amount of cash on me and my bank card. My card is linked to my checking account – NOT my savings account. The card is used for bills and groceries only. That is the rule. Cash is used for small, quick purchases and once it is gone, I don’t get more. Once my checking balance hits a certain point in checking, I transfer a preset portion to my savings to be held for emergencies. Translate this to an ingame scenario – oh wait, I can’t. We no longer have a savings account, or an account of any kind. We carry our cash, and our alts cash with us all the time. Hmmmm…..does not compute.
The bottom line here is this: money in your pocket is easy to spend. Money in the bank takes more of a conscious effort. Plus, it is too easy to accidentally purchase something in game with a misclick, when all you wanted to do is preview it or get more info.
Additionally, I LIKED making each character responsible for their own growth and gear, gold wise. I thought part of the point was to individualize each character and give them their own personality and story, NOT make them a conglomerate of one. If I am incorrect, then it stands to reason that character slots should be free – NOT something I am advocating or expect to see, but I am sure you can follow the logic.
So yes, I am in complete accord with you Deathdealers and would love to have our savings account (ability to deposit in the bank vault) back. I understand that some people don’t care and it doesn’t bother them. It does me, many of my friends, and obviously many more I haven’t spoken with yet.
ArenaNet, please return the ability to deposit gold into the bank so we have the option?
Thank you.
