There is no real way to be 'invisible' or anonymous
While I find the idea of this feature counter to the MMO aspect of the game I feel players should have the choice to be incognito.
The choice of being alone is part of being social. One can’t be social 100% of the time. That way madness lies, quite literally.

Personally, I like to listen to various podcasts and such while I play the game. It’s not that I don’t like my friends or anything, but sometimes I want to be able to just play the game without helping others level, running dungeons, etc. However, with the current offline feature, I’m afraid a guild member or friend might think that I don’t want to play or talk with them and then feelings get hurt. In reality, I simply wanted to focus on my podcast while grinding events somewhere.
One thing that should be noted is that GW2 has already added an offline feature. This means that all of the arguments which claim that anonymity should not be allowed are invalid. Clearly they want you to be able to hide the fact that you are online, or else they wouldn’t have implemented an offline feature in the first place. The problem is simply that you can see their location and/or alt name changing. All they need to do is make it so that that feature becomes hidden once you go offline.
As much as I hate everyone and everything, I realized I cannot play this game without anyone.
Good idea though.
There really is no good excuse for why these options don’t exist or why they come up short. Player’s should be given breathing room, and not forced to log off or play uncomfortably when there’s such an obvious alternative.
There’s still the option to log in invisible (press Y or your friends list button when choosing a character) but, whenever you pull up the game launcher and click “Log in”, even before you hit “Play” the game shows you online.
