1) I really miss the concept of going into a dungeon and clearing it, and being rewarded a chest at the end with the chance of getting rare weapon skins. It seems the only way to get rare or “exotic” skins is through crafting.

(My Thoughts/Opinion)
Personally I despise crafting. I don’t play a game to work, if any aspect of a game seems like a job I just don’t do it. So, it’s a little upsetting when the only way to obtain things is through crafting or buying peoples crafted items. Where is the fun in that? Wheres the challenge?

2) I miss certain Dungeons. Example, Fissure of Woe and Underworld. It would be nice to revisit them to see how they have changed over 250 years.

(My Thoughts/Opinion)
On that topic it would be interesting if they would increase the party size on those dungeons to if they were added. I guess to other mmo players make them like “raids.”

I know to me the current dungeon system is kind of Ironic. We went from 8 man groups down to 5. I find this funny because 2 spots in a group were normally for the healers. So instead of letting us utilize the free up space for the healers they just removed the spot all together.

I think increasing the group size of the dungeons might help people who are upset about the difficulty.

3) I miss the Missions in Guild Wars one. For those who did not play they were similar to the story quests except you were able to repeat them, and later play them on a higher difficulty to obtain a title.

It would be nice to go back and play some of the story quest again.

Please let me know if you agree, and what do you really miss? Maybe Arenanet will listen and implement some of these things back that we miss /fingers crossed

1. Definitely. First off, I LOVE the token system…it removes RNG for acquiring armor from the equation. HOWEVER, I thought that we would also be able to get rare skins, dyes, items, etc. from the chests as well that were UNIQUE to that particular dungeon.

I do like crafting as well, but I expected to be able to find things akin to the Voltaic spear or BDS. I don’t know if that would work with the weapons system we have, though.

Maybe capes/spineguards should drop instead with unikittenfects? Since these are few and far between, it would be pretty cool to see these drop from dungeons rarely.

Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc

I would love to revisit FOW and UW 250yrs later and see what’s happened. Even if the trip to FOW is me alone walking thru a field of daisies listening to a loving diety tell me how she reformed the land. I don’t care…I just wanna go back.

I think their still around, someone correct me if I’m wrong. The last we saw of them was when we busted up their base on the Fire Islands, but we never killed them off. After we ended the Titan threat they had no real purpose to continue their sacrifices in Tyria.

I miss the old chests too. You were guaranteed certain qualities and things from those chests that made you look forward to opening them. Now it’s like digging through a trash bin. Very rewarding huh.

I also miss being rewarded with stuff I could actually use, probably wanted, and was uniquely skinned for finishing a campaign. Now we get RNG wheels of death that are about as likely to give us something we can use as the chests are, and probably just as valuable.

How about Nick? Gotta buy our gifts with gems now, and get constantly nagwared by the high drop rate of the chests…

Respawning at the last waypoint without getting nyerked with a noticeable fee. What happened to what was it, “dying doesn’t need to be punished, you already died” or w/e from that PR vid.

This industry just needs to move on. We’ve seen a bunch of “WoW 2.0” attempts, and
who actually wants that? Do we really want to be playing those same game mechanics for
another 5 or 10 years? -Mike O’Brien

Fully customizable skill bar

Combat that is actually deeply tactical and revolves heavily around team orientation

capping elite skills, bosses with identity and unique drops rather than champion and veteran #236, more options for skills, non-static weapon abilities, change of attribute system and de-marginalization of healing / support.

Map instances in which you can group up and vanquish a set number of foes for title purposes.

I miss well defined skills. Once you learned the terms, you could tell exactly what what a skill would do, and how other skills would interact with it. I don’t know if they’re trying to make the game feel more organic by not explaining everything about a skill, but I miss it. It made the game feel more tactical, and made planning skill combinations more fun.

1) as well. I assumed they would take the best of GW1 dungeons and add on too it with the tokens.
Run a dungeon, get pieces of gear themed FROM that dungeon then spend the tokens to complete the set as you needed.
Boy was I wrong on that one. Dungeons = Token Farm. Bout sums up that content for me. bleh…

Armor that is fitting to the race/profession from the START. This one has bugged me since BWE1. In GW1 my class looked like the class I chose. The character also looked like he/she belonged in the game world when standing next to the NPCs/henchmen/Heroes. It made me get into the story and immersed me within the game world.

The armor in GW2 simply does not fit in with the game world unless you are a human or invest in Racial Armor.
The dungeon stuff looks like it got ripped out of WoW or some other “toonish” game in many cases. The armor with “wings” looks like Aion kicked it out. It just doesn’t fit in and I find it 4th wall breaking.

Anyway, I miss the ability to setup and easily get a character themed and looking like I want in a matter of days vs a month. I never quit GW1 soon as I got the look I was after; in fact, I played it and enjoyed it even more AFTER I had the look I wanted.
Now the looks are a long term goal that by the time I have “earned” it, I’m tired of the labor, grind and effort and don’t want to play as much.

I miss “adventure” being the goal of the game. They allowed with ease the ability to get our gear “out of the way” and let us focus on beating the story line bosses. In other words; we got to finish up the content while we looked like heroes.
In GW2, it’s backwards. We finish and experience the content THEN look like heroes.

I actually laughed when I beat Zhaitan. My thief looked like a scrub as she had since level 1. Nothing heroic at all about her.

Eh, that’s my opinion on what I miss at least.

Yes, the Mursaat are still around. They’re all holding up shop in Isles of Janthir.

There are tons of things I miss from Guild Wars and I hope ArenaNet keeps the vets in mind for the future. Here’s a list.

1. UW/FoW. I also miss Tomb of the Primeval Kings and the real Sorrow’s Furnace but everyone seems to hate those.

2. Capes.

3. GvG.

4. Chests.

5. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about this but I miss the concise description on tooltips and how well implemented all of the skills felt, even if there were some that were garbage.

6. Elite skill captures.

7. Alliances.

There is something that I’ve wanted to discuss on the forum that I feel strongly about but not many people tend to agree with me due to the fact that not much can be done at this point in the release.

I miss the simplicity of Guild Wars. This simplicity in game design allowed the designers to create a game with incredible depth. I feel like Guild Wars 2 has a lot of fluff that doesn’t really serve any purpose and is only there to appease those players coming from more generic MMO games. There are several elements that were simpler in Guild Wars that simply felt right.

The first of these elements was armor crafting. In Guild Wars, all armor was crafted. This was a simple system where players knew exactly where to get armor, how to do it, and may have allowed developers to release armor content much faster. It obviously doesn’t really work that way anymore. Right now, we can get armor from drops, tokens, karma, gold, achievement chests… It just doesn’t make sense to me. Why over-complicate a system that worked great? You [ArenaNet] could’ve used gold and materials as a payment method just fine again to create a satisfying armor purchase experience. It also enhances the dungeon experience, which I will explain in a moment.

The second of these elements was cooperative missions and elite areas. Right now, there are only dungeons in the game, and they are split in two: explorable mode dungeons, which are basically elite areas, and story mode dungeons, which have been introduced to replace cooperative missions. There’s a fundamental flaw with this system: once players do the story mode, they will never do it again. This means alternates and newer Guild Wars players will have a hard time progressing to “explorables”.

Right now, the explorables have branches that “expand the dungeon experience”. I’m not sure if this was to mimic instances like Fissure of Woe and the Underworld, but this system feels half-baked. Why not implement a dungeon system where, instead of branching, you have one-time events scattered throughout the dungeon that the player must participate in for rewards? This allows the player to run through the dungeon a-la FoW, completing each section of the dungeon until there is no more to do. This is an aspect of Guild Wars that I miss greatly and I feel like this is a much more satisfying experience.

The argument against this system is that players will speed clear the dungeons for tokens and only do what is most profitable. Well, this is where the armor system I mentioned before from Guild Wars comes into place. Instead of giving tokens at the end of the dungeon, you introduce random drops throughout the instance, so players don’t know when they will rewarded. They can play throughout the entire dungeon and not feel like they are wasting their time doing harder content. I’m not sure how ArenaNet could’ve missed the mark here!

Edit: Also, you [ArenaNet] are against grinding: then why did you make dungeon tokens?! Why not have a system where players can play the dungeon of their choice and still get the armor they want? Right now, the same dungeon must be done over and over to get only one set of armor. You guys had a recipe for success with Guild Wars!

The third of these elements is the singular story. Right now, I absolutely loathe the branching story in Guild Wars 2. This also takes an enormous amount of work for the Guild Wars 2 team to develop. It also means every player will have a different experience with the branches, meaning that some branches will be very well written and others won’t be as captivating. The Guild Wars story may not have been flawless, but it was definitely memorable. There are many moments in Guild Wars that I will remember for the rest of my life. I honestly can’t say the same for Guild Wars.

Sorry for the rant, there are other elements but I’m at work and I can’t really keep going. Regardless, I know ArenaNet will improve the game and maybe they won’t make these missteps again. Cheers!

This is a stupid comment. Unlike you, many who are in Guild Wars 2 are devoted Guild Wars fans who miss elements from the first game. We’re not logging onto Guild Wars because it’s a ghost town there and all of the content is old and dated. These comments enfuriate me and don’t provide much substance to the discussion.

not really a stupid comment. Don´t get me wrong, I loved GW1 and played it for many years. But the very fact it is a ghost town and GW2 is not – despite all doom predictions from “professional complainers” – shows how obviously GW2 is the “right” game for this day and age. We GW1 old timers can lament that and compliment us on how we knew better what a great game is or we can just enjoy ourselves in GW2 which is also a great game.

I miss Elite Skills as they were in GW1. Elites in GW2 just feel like stronger normal skills with longer cooldowns, some of them actually are (Ele’s elite elemental vs the normal lesser elemental). I miss Elites being build defining. I miss looking at an elite and thinking “that looks awesome, what other skills would go with it.”

I also miss SS bomb. It’s bad enough punishing a player for doing what they’re supposed to, it’s even worse when you punish a whole team when one player is doing what they’re supposed to. I can also imagine just how OP an SS bomb would be in WvW. Sure the system may only let AoE’s hit 5 players, but you get 3 SS bombers and you could easily wipe a 30 man zerg.

For those who don’t know what I’m referring to it was a necro/mesmer using Spiteful Spirit as the elite and then Arcane Echo as one of the skills. SS was a hex that would damage the target and nearby enemies whenever they attacked or used a skill. Arcane Echo would copy the next spell cast in the next 30 seconds so you could get 2 SS skills on your bar then spread it around in large groups and watch them fall. You would also throw other necro or mesmer skills on that would punish a player for completing normal actions.

that is of cause true, but I wonder, is it really just the outdated visuals or GW2s marketing schtick of being new or don´t games really evolve. Even if one totally hates the new GW, one cannot deny it being different from anything in MMORPG history and even while it is casual friendly as in “jump into action immediately” it certainly isn´t casual in the play like moron-sense of the word.

I’d be happy if they just tweaked the crafting so that each class got to craft gear that was tailored speciaifcally to that classes style and look instead of having to constantly transmute the look of other armour over the top of the latest crafting lvls because it looks more like armour an engineer would use and not somethign a ranger or thief would ever wear.

I do miss the uniquely named bosses and elite captures though so maybe future content could introduce those via a few new class specific questlines that reward skins/crafting recipes alongside new elite skills?

Build Wars.

They removed build planning in favour of action based combat… which boils down to either pressing “1” and mashing hotkeys when they come off cooldown, or (against bosses) dodging every hit or else you die.

The combat in this game is disappointing, which is a shame because the game was supposed to be about that. They took away builds for this reason.

Might as well play Diablo now.

Free waypoints.
Free, unlimited attribute rerolls.

Mostly realistic looking armors. (With some horrifying exceptions.)
Tormentor armor. Whoever it was that ruined it in GW2 should be beaten.
Fast leveling that required you to complete very little content.

Named bosses (champions) with unique drops.
Easily accessible merchants that sell max stat armor at a very low price, even if it looks terrible.
This isn’t “missing” exactly, but no forge, no convoluted process to get items, no ridiculously complicated anything. If you wanted something, you went and got it from one place.
Often excellent rewards that did not insult the player’s experience by insinuating it was not worth the effort. When you opened a chest, your only worry would be that the item inside wasn’t 100% perfect, not that it would almost certainly be junk.
Random Arena. Team Arena. PvP that had nothing to do with secondary objectives.
Pet evolutions. Not requiring a pet for Rangers. (Do not miss charm animal, though.)
Elite skills that you could build several entire builds around, that you used all the time as normal skills. Elites in general that aren’t awful. Elites that don’t replace your whole skillbar and destroy your build synergy. Capturing elites, too.
The ability to move your skills, your UI, resize it all and put it wherever you wanted.
The superb target tracking interface. When you targeted something, you actually knew where it was.
Secondary resources. Adrenaline, energy in general.
Defense-oriented combat that often only ended when you outsmarted the enemy (in organized games). Forgiving, paced combat with obvious skill usage (bars that list what they’re doing) that was never clouded with fX.
Showing someone’s profession by their name.
The entire Hall of Heroes, GvG and upper tier PvP set, which is completely absent in a game about wars between guilds.

I have more, but I have Risen grinding to do. :-p
