This is a character creation
…Could you rephrase the question? Because I don’t think the video speaks for itself quite as much as you meant it to.
I think he means to say that he wants the same level of customability as seen in APB.
And that he is disappointed with the small selection of haircuts and faces available in GW2 and that you have to pay gems for an extra haircut.
Not only that, there are many nuances. This has already been raised from the beta, the post could be extended much but the point is that there is no real freedom to customize a character and that in a game like guild wars 2 based on the art and style of each is something that leaves much to be desired compared with even lower quality games.
There is no freedom for the size of any body part, are prototypes standardized colors unreal eyes, eyebrows do not change color, facial details are very marked by the standard faces … etc …
not to mention the lack of makeup choice, faces look practically the same, no voice to choose from breaking the immersion of a freshly created character (i ones made a child engineer, everything was ok but it bothers me to no end that she still had an adults voice), not even a sign of GW1 traits.
many ppl in GW2 are GW1 vets yet not even one single GW1 character can be recreated, even in dragon age and mass effect you could recreate your character exactly.
i can understand that it’s graphic wise more advanced but when i look at the big picture, even the hair style and eye choice is downright ignored.
they have aion for god sake, that game dwarfs even APB by comparison.
THAT is a character creation

I think the intention of Anet was to have believable character looks and not ridiciously ugly characters who would break the overall style of the game. They achieved that, by simply cutting out a lot of customization. Now every 5th character looks nearly identical.
If we would just get a fraction of that I would be SOOOO happy!!! I still miss more faces and horns….
Whatabout if one intire patch was dedicated for just aesteticks for u’r character?! There os so much to wish for….
you know what the big problem is, when they add stuff like that it’s always behind a gem wall.
they are less likely to improve the game and more likely to milk you dry, it’s a nasty thing to say, i know, but lately Anet has done nothing more then disappointing work.

aion is dealing with fantasy characters while APB happens in a realistic environment. GW2 deals with realistic interpretation of fantasy so you will never see aion style of customization while APB style could easily be adapted in terms of acceptance.
Except the part where you can create extremely ugly and deformed characters in aion, the rest is pretty standard for any asian mmo

facepalm
realistic or fantasy, it has nothing to do with customization.
you can easily have the same customization of aion in APB and visa versa, it doesn’t change the style.
I would of simply been happy with the facial tools from C-A-S fro GW2 .
Does it really matter what color your eyes are or that you can pinch the nose more and slope the brow?
I know when I am fighting people I am often struck by the Blue of the 2 pixels that are their eyes behind that helm.
Even with helm hidden you can rarely make out the details of the face unless you are trying to and even then it’s only easy to see yourself. Why waste all that development time for such fine control that more often produces beings whose anatomy is fundementally flawed. And if any of you watch Faceoff on syfy you know correct anayomy is the number one thing in a believable character.
More options does not always equal better

You obviously haven’t played APB
This is what we expected for guild wars 2
Not if you were reading the blog posts on the matter up until release.

Main Character: Dathius Eventide | Say “hi” to the Tribulation Clouds for me. :)
At risk of seem shortsighted fun boy: I like the GW current version much more. Presented option, of course, much more rich in customization. However, I am familiar with such editors. There are TOO much of settings, on creation of a character you spend more than hour. And all the while not pleased with the result. GW satisfies me completely in this regard.
This is something that GW2 should been offered right on Launch.
Still possible to update it, and even highly waited by large percent of the playerbase.
If the game is really about to make an unique character look, then AN needs to take these skins, sliders & crafting methoods mutch more seriously. They know this “design flag” and I hope they plan this kind of update in early 2014.

Aside from color… I don’t really notice any of the details of any player characters in the world. I like customizing characters as much as the next guy, but in this context we wouldn’t even be able to look at our customizations.
Agree. Agree. Agree.
I wish Colin Johanson would reply to this thread. I wish this level would be available to my character more than any living world change. It would raise the game to an amazing level of fun and attachment to the character.
I wish we had that character control, I wish we did.
OP you have my +1.
I loved making my character, The Fudge, in APB’s engine.
A game based on aesthetics and art and ambition that had the project can not afford to have an engine customization of a character so crappy. Also speaking of things that even have worsened compared to guild wars 1 is that you can dye the weapons or the “backpacks”.

The options are also complex patterns that are fast. A creation so simple does not satisfy the desire of many people to have a unique looking character and taste of the creator.
Character Customization was one thing thats imported straight from GW1 and upgraded a bit. It feels so mutch retro that also feels outdated by years…
All we need to do right now is to support these kind of suggestions as mutch as we can do. Let AN see how mutch serious we take this

In my opinion EVE Online has currently the best character creator. And ironically, once you create your character you enter the spaceship and spend there 99% of the game, almost never seeing your pilot again.

Yeah thats something I never understood…
EVE Online has a strong one, but as far as I know the gameplay not allows you to wander around inside your own ship. So I don’t get it…
Right here in GW2 when you see your character all the time, its less important to look good?
What the hell goes on?!

i also expected this, no one will do what APB did, sorry. just like developers are wary of picking up the Aion one cuz of the unrealistic 2d, 10 foot heads walking around the game. ESO picked the best character creator imo, Age of Conan. Soon as a saw it , i was like “oh i know that CC”.
Sorudo! That was what I expected too… That wuould be not too much nor too Little! Amazing!

I also quite like this system of creation, is the norm in games of this generation, so guild wars 2 falls well behind.
Oh I wish we can customize our armor and weapons in Guild Wars 2 like in APB.
PSO2’s (Phantasy Star Online 2) is very good, but its anime and doesn’t quite fit here. Yet the menus and stuff are very robust, yet, easy to use (after translating from Japanese of course!)

I totally agree with that, guild wars 2 should give many more customization options and not just in character creation.
I wasn’t at all impressed by that video. Yeah GW2 could use a few more options, but it’s easy to provide as much minor tweaking that APB has when you only have 1 race (read:base creature model). And some of those options were childish and ridiculous at best….hearts for pupils..really? I think all things considering, we have a lot of customization in GW2. There could stand to be a few new hairstyles available without the use of the gemstore, but beyond that, the amount of tweaking we cna do already is pretty good. The only race lacking strong customization would be the charr. But when it comes to visuals, they always get the short end of the stick anyway.
Yeah at first the character customization didn’t bother me, but when I wanted to make a role play character, I was hit with a wall of limitations. Simple adding more faces, hairstyles, ability to increase decrease length of hair would be fine.
Definitely wouldn’t mind more character customization upon creation but most likely if they ever did put out something close it would be locked until you buy an item in gem store with either tons of gold or real money :P
Honestly why is it that the girls make up and scars on guys is tied to the face you choose instead of its own thing it sucks xD
