Time Attack Modes for Jumping Puzzles
Ok I get it. Too awesome suggestion, blew everyone’s mind so no one can comment?
Maybe I should have suggested to NERF THIEVES instead to get more responses?
I like the idea
copy and paste of my post from another thread:
A title is one of the more boring rewards in GW2 if you ask me.
Why not unlock time trials after you’ve completed every Jumping Puzzle? Just like in the guild races you’ll have to pass certain checkpoints one after the other so that Mesmer portals are out of the equation.
And then introduce ingame leaderboards. The 10 fastest players per week in a JP get rewarded with gems. This way people would also spread out to different JPs and learn how to be even faster than before.
Also increase the rewards. For beating a certain time (not too hard, but also challenging) you’ll get a guaranteed rare/exotic per day/JP + 40s.
Super excellent additions to the suggestion. It oozes with possibilities and would give the JPs so much more replayability. I would still remove the ability to use portals altogether. Even with the checkpoints they could skip several jumps by having a bunch of mesmers with their portals helping them, making the leaderboard pointless.
Just… YES, please; all of the above.
not sure if it’s a good idea, but what if you spawn a hidden boss when you beat a certain time limit in the time trial? Your time still counts but you have the optional possibility to defeat a bonus boss and get maybe a chance of a nice skin.
Could be viable at least in certain JPs. Many of them do have a “boss” (a veteran, though) at the end already. Maybe activating the time trial would upgrade it to a champion for a certain time. You would not only have to finish the puzzle in time, but also kill the champ in the timeframe. Awesome for group runs.
Oh and while we are at it. They could add more guild puzzles too. Three of them is too little
Nothing ruins a JP like a timer IMO, that’s why I hated the Xmas/Halloween ones :/

well it would be fully optional since you can start it like guilds can start time trials in the guild races. You could still run your daily JP the normal way and getting your chest + daily achievement.
A lot of people loved the Winter’s Day and Halloween JPs. There was a thread once ( http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/1gyk41/achievements_you_are_proud_of/ ) where people were asked what they are most proud of in GW2. For a lot of people it wasn’t their Legendary, it was getting to the end of the Halloween JP.

Exactly. The JPs could be finished just as they are now, but if you wanted, you could up the challenge for yourself.
But yeah I can foresee a bazillion cries of “DIZ IZ TOO HARDZ!” if there is any incentive of doing the Time Attack Mode, because it seems people playing MMOs believe they should be entitled to every reward in the game even if they were plain bad at playing them.
there could be a potential problem: different players feel it’s unfair for their profession…
What if the time trials lock all of your skills and traits during the race? So you can’t use the thief-ports, you can’t use the mesmer portals or blink etc. – only your jumping skills. Instead each player’s nr.1 skill is a swiftness skill on a reasonable cooldown. This would allow for a more tactical approach and viable to compare your time on the leaderboards.
I don’t care for the QQ crowd, since it’s an optional activity. I’m not happy with the direction the achievements have taken… so I’d give this activity a 0 point achievement. Rewards like those listed above should be rewarding enough.
Alternatively Anet could implement REALLY difficult achievements en masse so that those QQers learn that they can’t have every achievement in the game.
There are too many JP that force you into fights in order to have your powers disabled. Other than that I’m fine with it.
|Daredevil|Ranger|Guardian|Scrapper|Necromancer|Berserker|Dragonhunter|Mesmer|Elementalist
|Deadeye|Warrior|Herald|Daredevil|Reaper|Spellbreaker
Maybe just code that if the player chooses time trial to give a “buff” that prevents the usage of things such as portals or other things that could be used to gain an unfair advantage over someone without that skill. That way they still have access to things like their elites and other utility skills and their heal and their normal skills. And it doesn’t penalize the players who would not use those skills.
And I don’t know about others, but I use one of my AOE ring attacks to figure out where I’m jumping in the Pirate JP in LA. So I’m not fond of getting my skills disabled.
you have a point Seera. The thing is: tons of skills (even weapon skills) can give you an advantage to movement. The leap with warrior sword, the teleport with shortbow thief,…
I’d rather give players an environmental weapon (specific to the jumping puzzle) so that everyone has the same chance. In your example it would be a torch, so that players can see the ledges in the dark room. Some of these skills could be also used for combat, but I doubt that you’ll have a good result if you stop fighting enemies.
As someone who’s planning to spend a whole day doing every puzzle in the game, I’ve been considering timing myself and trying to speedrun them. I’d very much like a time-attack option.
I strongly say no to automatically generating champions or extra mobs. JPs are JPs, they should not mandate people solo champs or are required to run in groups.
