Anet has already posted ways for players to increase their security to prevent account losses, but honestly, not all players will listen. To be fair, not all players are at fault for losing their accounts. Yes some pick common passwords, reuse the same password for multiple applications, or visit naughty sites that install key loggers. But some are victims of other website hacks that manage to take over vital e-mail accounts, thus opening a door to possible GW2 account takeovers.

Beyond the authenticators, the Anet Devs should consider an in-game Inventory lock system. This could be an option that allows players to “freeze” items and coin on their accounts, preventing them from being sold to the merchant or mailed to another player. A separate password could then be used to make manual unlocks to both the items and coin. So if a hacker managed to get access to an account, they couldn’t steal anything. This is similar to the security freeze option the main credit bureaus like Experian and Trans Union use (although they charge a fee for each unlock). This gives an extra layer of protection to players, granted they don’t use the same password for both login and lock functions. AND it could give another gold sink to the game, if there’d be a Gem fee for each lock and unlock.

While the above option would help prevent a hacker from stealing the items and money in someone’s account, they can still do damage by deleting characters completely. This where that separate password could come in handy. That same Inventory password could also be used as a confirmation before deleting characters.

In theory, all this may be easy to talk about, but I’m sure the programing nightmares the Devs would be having would be justified. I understand you can’t just add a new code to existing code and expect things to magically work. And the fact that it would take countless working hours to implement a system that benefits only a small fraction of the player population.

Once the Account Restoration service becomes available, this idea will probably become useless. Perhaps it’s an idea that would potentially be considered for the future? GW3 is only several years away.

In GW2, Trading Post plays you!

I didn’t read your whole post I got to this part

(Anet has already posted ways for players to increase their security to prevent account losses, but honestly, not all players will listen. To be fair, not all players are at fault for losing their accounts.)

I am sorry I started laughing here, how much do we have to hold peoples hands before we say sorry you SOL ?

I tell my son no not to touch the stove cause it is hot, he ask me what is hot. So I take a moderatly warm spoon and let him touch it pressing it against his finger. ( Being a chef I know this wont burn him but is sting for a while and it gets the point across) He pulls back and say’s he doesn’t like that and it hurts. I then show him Pictures and videos of people that were burn by fire and hot water ect ect. I am thinking that at 6 pm at night was not the best time as he had nightmares but hind sight is 20/20 right?

The point of this is, when my son grows up and he decideds to douse himself in gasoline and play with fire, is it my fault or is it his?

I taught him as my parents taught me and their parents them.

You want Anet after warring people showing people what would happen and taking precautions them selves to help the user prevent it to do more ????

Cause if it is not all players faults for losing their accounts who’s is it?

Only a player can jepordize his own account. Even if I had his log in information I couldn’t steal his account as it emails him saying a different IP is logging on.

There is a point when people have to take personal responsibility for them selves, stop making excuses for the stupid… our Government has that covered for you.
