Town clothes in replace of armor skins
hmmm nope.
Towncloths have the purpose to be independend on armor type. a warrior wearing a cook uniform isnt right. Besides that they are here to please the roleplaying community. If you dont like the function then dont buy them.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!

This is a ridiculous and juvenile response.
To the OP: I’ve thought about this too, and I have mixed feelings about it. Neverwinter allows it and it’s kind of cool, and town clothes currently are pretty pointless, so something needs to be done with them. I’d bet the reason they don’t allow them outside of towns is because they’ve intended for your class archetype to be visually recognizable.
I think probably a better solution would be to add more townclothes and create some new interesting minigames using them, or enhance the costume brawls in some way.

I know some stuff like hats would be fun to have the option of with armor or with town clothes.
And if ya don’t want my flail,
better shake that mighty tail! Aw yeah!
The problem, as it was pointed out to me, is class identification in PVP.
I am completely willing to accept the idea of replacing any armor appearance with any other armor appearance, any armor with any clothing appearance, and any clothing with any armor appearance. So +1 to you for that.
This combination of features that blurs the line between armor, which is class-specific, and clothing, which is not, MUST come with the ability for a PVPer to override your custom armor with stock appearances so that they know how to properly react to you as an incoming enemy. If that feature already exists, great. If not, it does need to be included or our PVP/WvW types will be quite angry with this appearance feature.
You could always have a system similar to GW1’s Costumes where you could show your Costume (and Guild Cape) in town and out of town. You could choose which piece was shown where/how (example: Cape is shown in town, but not out of town. Costume hat is show out of town, but not in town. Costume coat is shown everywhere.)
Please! I want my Charr in his Chef gear to run around spitting blue fire everywhere!
Proud player of Crusader, Arcanist,
Beastmaster, Shadowraider, and Shieldbearer Zakk!

So we shouldn’t have the option?
I never said I didn’t like any function – but an option would be super grand.
I’d much rather wear my town clothes (the starter ones) versus my armor

See? & I’d love to wear aviator goggles with my engi’s armor

I understand about the identification – but there is also a class icon like a skull for Necros, a flame for ele’s~ I think it’d be pretty obvious to recognize the mesmer from the warrior even if we all wore town clothes—-
I love the idea of the mini games/ some sort of enhancement for costume brawls
