Travelling Alternatives
I agree, there’s no reason mounts shouldn’t be in the game while we have waypoints. Everyone boohooing and crying like a baby that we don’t “see the world the way the dev’s want us to”, then, why are we not allowed to see it the way we want to? With waypoints, we miss most of the world anyways, the majority of players are doing map completion for the gift of exploration, not to “see the world.” Another badly thought out argument is that it makes the world small. And waypoints don’t? Honestly, I’m teleporting throughout the world and am able to go anywhere in an instant, how does that not make the world feel “small?”
I’m left wondering how ships could be implemented. The waterways aren’t particularly wide and in most cases are far too shallow. Interesting idea though and a welcome change from the usual cries of “Mounts, NAO!”.
I Will +1 this, however:
- No flying mounts
- No combat mounts
- All “Foot” Mounts, (granting an increase of 45% movement speed) Thus giving time to also explore the zones (Flying mounts tend to ruin the exploration)
- “Special” mount Skins can be bought from BLTC for gems (Giving Anet some sort of profit from this idea also…..what? All companies like a bit of profit no matter how small, and i would support this idea…..)
:).

I’d rather invest in a mount than pay the ridiculous prices to travel to waypoints.

Exactly as you say, Grimm, people are travelling around for the sake of the achievement, and not out of a lust for seeing the well crafted world.
- AN said that they didn’t want the game to feel like one long boring grind, but for me it is becoming exactly that. I think that giving players these resources to just go out and experience the world, instead of giving them an amount of tasks to complete in an area would be better, especially because of their Dynamic Events which nobody are around for anyhow. I would like to have more convenient ways of travelling than running the distance, so that I can get immersed in the world, help out with Dynamic events and, to sum it all up into one sentence, experience the game in all its aspects.
- The waypoints are great and saves a lot of time, if perhaps, say, going to a dungeon with some friends.
- The thing is that when I have completed the hearts, found the vistas and points of interests, I have no use for a zone any longer, and travelling through it by foot is too much of a pain so I use the waypoint. My point is that slowly, as the zones a completed one by one, the game is shrinking until there is only Orr and Lion’s Arch left.
Roostapro: No flying mounts. They have zeppelins in Orr, and I suppose they too could be used to make travel more convenient, but in my opinion there shouldn’t be any player controlled flying mounts, no.
- I like the idea of buying skins too, since the game is Buy-to-play and not pay-to-play, I would gladly support them through these transactions.
Uknortherner: I know that there isn’t much water to go around for making a lot of ports, but getting from the Tarnished Coast, or Dawnside Quay in Rata Sum to Lion’s Arch would be a start.
- I remember in (and please don’t hate me for using this word) WoW, back in the Classic WoW days, the first time I went on a ship was quite a thrill for me. I don’t know if it’s just me, but that sense of adventure is not really present in Guild Wars 2 as of yet, however, I think that it is due to the new design on the MMO genre. AN listens to their community, or so I have experienced, and I think that when the game really gets going and sees it first expansion, there will have been made some changes to it to make it more immersive and fun to play.
(BTW, people, I do not play WoW anymore, so don’t fret. And I’m not about to get bitten by the Panda either. )
My suggestion, Raise the price for way point travelling. Teleporting trough tyria is boring as hell, no wonder people get bored when all they see is LA, Cursed shore, and Dungeon entrances. What’s the point of taking a portal from LA to BC and then walk to AC when I can just spend a silver or two, to Teleport from LA to AC?
It makes the world seem small, and there is also no point to ever visit any other cities than LA (except world completion and Cultural gear) In GW1 you could also teleport between cities, but each city had something special about them that made them worth visiting, like Skills/Spells you could only get from certain citys, unique armors, “Dungeons” amongst a lot of other things.
I think it’s to late to remove the waypoints, but making it pricier to teleport, people have to find other ways of travelling.
Same thing goes for the Asura portals. Have any1 here ever travelled to LA and taking the portal to the mist or WvW? Instead of just pressing “Go to heart of the mist” or B and choosing which map you want to queue up for?
Force the players to travel or all the towns except LA will become ghost towns.
Komuflage, you are so very right.
- I also remember GW1, after hitting lvl 20 the game had barely even begun. There were quests to do, skills to achieve (elite skills), armorsets etc. so there were tons of things to do out in the game world. (I also liked that there were cutscenes in GW1, they worked better for me than the “cutscenes” in GW2)
- As I’ve already said, I think they are already trying to solve these issues to some degree, but I’d like for them to take this into consideration as soon as possible, because they risk loosing a huge amount of players. I know many who have already left, because they don’t feel that the game does enough to lure them in.
- Hopefully AN will see this thread, because as what I’ve experienced, it is the game’s ability to make people feel like doing these casual things that keeps them playing.
After all, the game is not the end zones and the quest for gear in the dungeons. There are so many aspects to the game, but oft times it is in the end game content that the focus lie. If the end game consisted of the entire world and not just a few select zones, it would be spot on.
- Excuse me for using WoW as an example again, but the Darkmoon Faire was an attraction that were held in starting zones from time to time. Making some attractions for all players in the low level zones is one way to go about the issue.
I like how they make the events in GW2 though. I had a lot of fun doing the Halloween events, and I like how they have this one time event with “The Lost Shores” coming up next. I’m looking forward to try it out, but I would like for them to lure me back into the low level zones, because many of them are full of content I’ve yet to experience.
