When StarCraft II was in beta, Blizzard had the most ridiculous swear filter. You could not even say “transport” with the filter on because it would come out as “*****port.” Apparently, “trans” was a bad word. Blizzard lightened up on filter and made it better after many, many complaints.

I feel like GW2 has the same problem with the filter, not only with text, but names. I wanted to name my pet “Frostbite,” but the game wouldn’t let me, saying it was “inappropriate.” I didn’t understand why until someone explained to me that the latter part of the name was a bad word.

In truth, that word is bad (I actually had forgotten that), but the combined word “Frostbite” shouldn’t be considered inappropriate. I recommend that you, ArenaNET, should look into your filter for Guild Wars 2 and not do what Blizzard did to StarCraft II.

You should prolly change the thread title to reflect that you want changes to the pet/character name restrictions rather than word filters, since they aren’t really the same thing as names have additional restrictions than the swear filter does.

What language is ‘bite’ a bad word in? Definitely not English.

I think in slang English it is. I remember it being a swear word.

Regardless, I’d like to be able to name my cat Frostbite. :P

I don’t believe bite is a swear word, and there’s nothing I have found that says it is.

Edit: And if the slang you’re referring to is the slang verb, that’s hardly a swear. “He bites” is synonymous with “he sucks” or “he stinks”, so.

Exactly, but ArenaNet has the word banned for naming pets (and possibly characters) with the word “bite” in it, which seems silly (hence why I brought in the StarCraft II Beta example in the first post).
