Using a utility skill instead of an elite

I can support this, though I mostly like my elites on all my characters, it’s really annoying that my Asura Thief can only use basilisk venom underwater, and I’m not specced for venoms.

I agree about the underwater elite.. I also think removing signet of capture to obtain your elite instead of buying it was also a mistake & took away from the uniqueness that guild wars1 introduced (at least to me i never saw anything else like it besides FF7). I also find it sad that unless you’re going for legendary, obtaining further skill points passed 80/after obtaining all skills is a total waste. It becomes a useless “currency.”
I do use my elite very often (I play guardian), but it would be nice to have more options.
It would be nice from a variety standpoint, however I suspect the devs have restricted utilities to 3 spots for a specific reason and they would not want to hand out a 4th utility slot so freely.

They restricted because they are trying a flawed premise for balance.
The idea is that if the player is given few options, the game is easier to balance.
Sure, the game will have fewer interactions to keep track of, but the burden of balance lies squarely on the shoulders of the development team.
Given many options, the game may be to complex to fully understand, but it will also balance itself to some degree.

Its a good idea though it will probably end up making everybody stronger than they would otherwise be, since the elite skills are not that great generally, but give me an extra cantrip on elementalist and I will basically be unkillable.
Really? I’m not seeing monumental surges in elite skills at all! Invinceable is nice, but 3 seconds is just not worth it. In all other games it’s 30secs so why not this one? Just an example of how these skills are far overrated in terms of effectiveness. And not only are these skills not as good as one would hope, but they have a larger cooldown on top of that! Feels punished for using elite skills!
It would be OP. Many elites would be overshadowed by bigger combos that can be spammed often.
I know on my engineer I’d much rather have another kit or a different elixir instead of both elixir X and that useless mortar .Elixir S on my engineer provides 3 seconds of invincibility and it’s not even an elite, and I can still attack with kits. Many elites are worse than basic skills.
This is definetlying something i really want. As an elementalist i prefer another utility over elite in any situation.
I do agree with that necro noise…that can be toned down a bit imo

FYI Skill points are used to forge Mystic weapons and a number of other things.

To me alot Elites are crap or not better (often becos of short duration with long recharge).
So, YES, i would really like to be able to use a 4th utility skill (in the Elite skill spot).

Me too… me too..
Removing the bound elite skill slot isn’t really solving anything, its just covering it up for the few who would rather equip another signet or cantrip or well or w/e. It just becomes too difficult to balance something with every door open to them, thats why we get 3 utlity, 1 healing, 1 elite. Its their system and works fine, however, some elite skills are rather disapointing but that means revamping those unattractive skills not giving another option like a 4th utility. Most elite skills are exactly that, elite. They should only be used when necessary. Some are less than elite hence their short cd yet some are more than good enough and get still a short cd. Elite skills just need some tweaking is all.
FYI racial elite skills are supposed to be crappy, they were purposely designed that way. Basically only use them to have a lil fun in pve but other than that they don’t stack up against the profession elites.
break. I feel like they should be back by now..”

most of the elites feel underpowered or not very useful for little benefit and a 90s or more cool-down. Elites are very underwhelming.
