(Visual) More realistic grip on swords
Depends on the sword, but it’s very rarely a sword is held directly underneath the handguard (since it allows for more freedom of movement) and only a few techniques in Kendo grip the bottom of the sword handle like that (for example, Men [head] strikes), so I see your point.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
There are many ways of using a sword usually that also means different swords require different approaches.
I could now enter on how wrongly it looks to me the look of my character holding the great sword … which to me would be absurd , if this was not a game and did not understand Anet is only trying to make char look cool.
So really , “realistic grip” depends on which sword , which style and so on you are using , there is no way you simple sum up everything in one way.

If one holds the sword longer back on the handle (more than 3cm from the guard) one gets worse controll over the sword because too much weight is forward. But of course som rare techniques uses such stances. try holding a ironbar of 50 cm and you will feel how much more heavy it gets if you hold it at the far end. Its a sword not an axe. But its just a suggestion to change this.
Some of the swords in this game should about break the user’s wrist anyway…
this is the way to hold a sword. That is, hand close to the guard.
It’s not wrong, but very rare to hold a sword like that… I’ve done a bit of fencing and kendo, so I have a little experience with real technique.

This ^
It’s very rare for a sword to be held directly underneath the hand guard. It’s far more common to hold it towards the middle and lower portions of the hilt.

… or break the characters back…
