So last night in Lion’s Arch there were TONS of Commander icons littered all over the map. Is there a way to turn them off? I know the players like having it for WvW but for PvE the option to turn them off would be welcomed.

I semi-support this, I worked hard for my Icon so the least that should be disabled would be on the minimap and not the icon above people’s heads. I know this may get annoying, but if you complain that the icons above people’s heads are annoying and want them removed, you may as well remove the icons from the merchants and karma merchants.

yeah all I’m interested in is turning them off for the mini map and world map. The UI is nice and clean, they’ve done a good job with the decluttered approach – so why are there constantly blue dots all over my maps?

Hit up the suggestion area for this. There’s several requests on this in there. Add support to those and it may happen faster. #here’s_hoping

The Commander Icon is supposed to be helpful for WvW, not so you can sit in town with a “LOOK AT ME!!! LOOK AT ME!!!!” Icon.

Correct me if I’m wrong but cant the Icon be toggled on and off by the user?or are you a perma-commander after the book is used?

There is an option to turn it off and on whenever.

OK, so basically the kids sitting in town are just seeking attention. Seems sad to me that there’s so many people with self-esteem so low that they need to show off the fact that they spent 100g, cuz surely not all of them “forgot” to turn off their icon.

I don’t want to see them at all since it breaks the immersion for me. Yes you could say the same about merchants, etc. but those are actually helpful where as, in PvE, the commander icon is useless. I actually am not sure why there is no option to turn it off in WvW as well….freedom to the players.

Why do you need it on outside of PvP (really, most ‘commanders’ should never have it on)?

I don’t need my minimap cluttered with people who want everyone to know they spent 100g on something.

Yes that’s my point. I have no idea why they turn it on in PvE and not sure why the devs don’t allow us to turn it off? It does not seem like it would be a hard fix at all.

You can’t even see it so you only want PvErs to see it for your vanity? Really?

Best solution is to make Commanders unable to show their icons outside of wvwvw.
Then everybody’s happy.

Actually now that I think on it the use of them in WvW is going to get out of hand also. I mean what are we going to do with 20-30 commander icons on the map in WvW? How is that going to be organized? Not that I’m against them in WvW just unsure on how that mechanic is not going to get messed up with all these blue icons everywhere.

If I am in a Commander’s squad I’d want to see their icon, other than that, I see no need see it. It only tells me that someone was desperate enough for status that they spent 100g. It really only says that you had 100g to spare, while impressive, it doesn’t prove anything.

Right I can see the plus in that Beast but if there are 20 other commanders with blue icons in WvW how will you even know which one is your commander?

I argee with this, but FYI, i think people have them on in PvE either to show off or use it to Recruit, which is what i do.

Agreed. I wish they would just do away with this and allow everyone to see where their own teammates are. I’m sick of people thinking they are dictators.

If you see someone with a commander icon on in a town, you can right-click their portrait and choose ‘join squad’. They can’t kick you out of the squad.

You can then chat in the squad channel with /squad. Get a friend to join the squad too, and chat away… but make sure you don’t break any rules about spam or harassment.

After all, until ANet make some changes, commanders have every right to turn on their commander icons in towns. You might as well make use of your right to join their squad and chat to squad mates. I’m sure your squad commander would appreciate this mutual assertion of rights and it wouldn’t annoy them at all.

The commandes who use their icon for meta events won’t behappy people can also ignore it no? Its not really doing anything to your gameplay experience

Some people see the Commander icon as a sign of wealth, I’ve seen a fair few commanders in LA (not even overflow) who I’ve never see play WvW.

It’s not a problem in wvw, most commanders only turn theirs on when there is a requirement for a commander at a particular map- except for the annoying new guild that joining SFR recently that had 15-20 camped in EB JP thinking it was funny to prevent players from doing wvw and laughing while we struggled to retain our t3 towers etc on the real map.

People obviously turn them on in pve for the attention.

I’d like to disable the icons completely. If someone wants to advertise that they spent 100 gold, let them if it makes them happy. But in pvp I keep seeing masses of people blindly following people with a commander icon, to the point where it’s zerg vs zerg with people with purdy icons leading each zerg. Some of us prefer more challenging fights, but it’s hard when so many just want to follow the hordes led by the icons.

And to have it in pve? Why not just say
/map I spent 100 gold on this purdy icon

and be done with it?
