We NEED a Closet
I can’t but agree, already got like 75 slots of armor skins and am running out of space.
Too bad. They had a great solution already up and running in GW1. Then they went and threw it out in favor of a far more irritating and onerous one. And more irritating still is that they have all the mechanics for a “closet” already built into the game, they just won’t implement it. Anyone with a Hall of Monuments knows just how easy it would be to let players access a collection of skins from a storage NPC.
I’m sure this is done in some way to support the gem shop, although, I think they would be better off allowing people to permanently save skins to a collection and make them Account Bound using Fine Transmutation Stones. In four months, I’ve bought 5 stones (and I still have two left). If I was able to capture skins permanently, I probably would have bought 50 by now. The armor skin system they have in place right now, due to how poorly it fits my needs, actually is responsible for keeping me from buying those stones. Their benefits are temporary, thus not worth spending money on.
If I could collect skins permanently, I’d probably try to collect every skin in the game eventually. But because they are such a pain in the backside to deal with, and are likely to be lost eventually, I’ve barely used the system at all. I use my HoM all the time though.
They’d get my gem purchases if there was a closet system and if you could transmute the “city” clothes to your armor….to have the look of city with the stats of armor.
I think that allowing players to “unlock” armor skins like they do dyes would encourage (A) more transmutation stone purchases, and (B) more exploration of the game world in pursuit of all of those skins. As it is, I’ve found the set that I like, and now there’s not much reason for me to continue playing the game. I don’t even bother with dungeons anymore because I know that I’m not actually going to use the skins that I get.
Part of the reason I’m hesitant to pursue new skins is that I don’t want to accidentally skin over the ones that I know I like, and I don’t especially want to purchase a whole new set of exotic 80’s for each new set of skins. Some/most of those skins take a lot of work, too! That’s way too much work to do more than once, if you know what I mean.
Champions Online is one game that I know I’ve sunk way too much money into, and it’s because I love to tinker with my costumes. Give people a huge list of options, and they’ll spend a lot of time and potentially money exploring them. I don’t even like that game, but I love the dolly dress-up aspect.
Summary: I agree that ANet is missing a big money-making opportunity by not giving us some sort of unlockable armor skin closet. From what I’ve seen, there are a few threads in this forum about it, and I think it would keep an awful lot of people in the game pursuing unlockables that will actually last.
