We don't need mounts, but better speed boosts
Uh, no.
If you find exploration boring, that’s your problem. Trivializing it is not the answer.
My least favorite professions are the ones that don’t have a permanent swiftness signet or trait. I made the mistake of rolling the largest possible Norn Mesmer. Part of it is perceptual due to the size and animation but drat that thing seemed slow as all get out. His life in Tyria was short lived.
As for the professions that have it, I think the swiftness buff they get is fast enough.
Currently, some classes have 25% permanent speed boosts with signets, which are a step in the right direction.
Four out of six professions have a Signet that gives +25% movement speed. Warriors have a 10 point trait in a popular trait line that gives 25% with melee weapons. The only one really left out of the party is Mesmer.
Personally, I would like to see some way of getting a 50-100% increase in movement speed. Preferably, this would be something to work towards, like a 5 gold purchase, available after level 40 (10/11, 20 and 30 are all major milestones, so 40 for a speed boost makes sense). Perhaps the speed boost could be implemented with a skill-like button next to the skill bar, with a 3-second (or so) activation time.
Wow wow wow, hold it right there!
Swiftness is +33%. Giving a +100% movement speed boost would mean moving 50% faster than with Swiftness. That’s insane.
Of course, there would be a few limitations. The speed boost would:
-Not be usable in combat, but not be affected by falling damage either
-Not be usable in sPvP or challenges like Sanctum Sprint, but should be usable in WvW
-Not be usable in dungeons (this may change if Arenanet add very large dungeons)
-Have no cosmetic effect (other than the swiftness effect animation, or similar)
- Not affected by fall damage? What do you mean by that?
- No, I don’t think so. WvW needs those long distances, otherwise everything is dulled to endless games of attrition.
I feel that this would encourage me to explore the game world more. This also means that I would be more likely to bump into Dynamic Events, which is beneficial to the cooperative aspect of the game. I don’t see a reason for it not to be implemented.
People who don’t already explore are not going to explore just because it gets done faster. If anything, you might cause some reward-hungry people to explore, but that’s not really the kind of thing you wanna encourage.
In addition, Arenanet could monetise the concept. Perhaps the ability could cost a decent number of gems: I’m sure most players would be happy to pay real money for sufficient gems, and those who won’t can grind the gold and use the exchange.
Do you realize what you just said? You suggested a mechanic that would be absolutely gamechanging in WvW and then you want to monetize it? That would make the game very much pay-to-win. And that’s not a road you wanna get on, because it never ends well.

What I mean by the speed boost not being affected by fall damage is that you are not slowed down when you take damage from falling too far (perhaps there should be a reasonable limit, e.g. no more than 50% of total health is lost).
For the rest of your post, sorry, but we’ll have to agree to disagree. 50-100% speed boosts seem absolutely normal to me. There are MMOs which have ways of getting 300%+ movement speed, and it’s not “insane.” Likewise, I think WvW maps are too big for normal running speed, and I’m sure a lot of people agree with me. Similarly, I think that increased movement speed would encourage plenty of people to explore more, myself included.
With regard to what you are saying about making the game ‘pay-to-win,’ I already said that people can use the gold to gem exchange. I don’t think Arenanet would take the effort to implement something like this if they knew they weren’t going to get anything out of it, hence I suggested it.
Without a doubt one of the worst suggestions ever. Weirwynn’s answer is the right one to this.
I agree with the speed boosts.
As a heavy mesmer and necro player I always find myself falling behind the groups. Especially the fact that necro does have multiple speed boosts in the skills and I still lag behind of everyone is a bit of an annoyance.
Necros can have permal swiftness. trait that boost spead when holding a dagger is something like 10% offhand 15% main hand.
