Weapon swapping
It goes into a normal bag because of the priorities set with different bags.
Basically, an item will only ever go into an invisible bag if all other bags are full.
Though I have to question: There’s still a pop up when you try to salvage exotics, so how in the crouton did you manage to pull that off?
If you swap out weapons a lot, you could always consider getting a fractal bag. While the item will still appear in the sell-to-vendor list, I would think you can get around that by tinkering with the order of your bags.

Sounds like your own fault for not paying attention.
I’ve accidentally sold an exotic to a vendor once. Felt terrible. XD
Didn’t go blaming the game though, my own fault for spam-selling my junk with reckless abandon.
Lv80s: Guard, Thief, Necro. Renewed my Altaholic’s card on the HoT Hype-Train. Choo choo~
Ofcourse it was my mistake, i was salvaging soms rares from world bosses so i din’t pay attention. Still, a simple option ‘unsellable/unsalvageable’ when you right click an item would be awesome.
There are invisible bags to prevent selling and inventory management against salvaging
I feel your problem, Link. I’m a staff elementalist 95% of the time, but I occasionally mix it up with daggers, or scepter/focus, just to play around with some different attacks, and it’s a surprisingly big irritation when it tosses one of my weapons into my main bag instead of my “spare weapons” bag. Automatically sorted bags won’t help (since they can’t distinguish the weapons I use from weapons I loot,) and invisible bags (which I do use) only pick up one of the two weapons when I swap back to my staff. I don’t usually sell/salvage my rare or exotic weapons, or at least not in bulk, but it does mess up my carefully sorted inventory.
While there is absolutely no way Elementalists should be allowed to swap weapons in combat, giving them access to a spare weapon set slot, like most other classes, would be a major convenience. It’s not something I would call a priority problem, but it would be a nice quality of life improvement.

D: since I fear this is too late:
Did you buy it back? There’s a tab at all vendors to buy back from your recent sales.
Or another D: if you knew that but had sold so many things it got pushed off the list.
Hopefully it wasn’t too expensive :P
