What if Series 2 legendaries were upgraded versions of unique Mystic Forge skins? The skin in question would constitute the precursor in the building process. Examples include:

Sword – Obsidian Flame

Precursor = Jormag’s Breath

Appearance and effects:
More visually impressive version of the ever-popular Black Dragon Sword from Guild Wars 1.
Black fire trails and slashing effects.
Grows larger with each kill, then dwindles back to normal size over time.

Focus – The Shifter

Precursor = Anomaly

Appearance and effects:
Like the Anomaly, it’s a orb that surrounds the user’s hand when wielded. It adapts its appearance based on the wielder:
Mesmer – A more visually impressive Anomaly. Gives aura effects to illusions. Pink energy from footsteps.
Necromancer – Green and black haze that swirls around the wielder’s hand. New particle effects. Leaves a hazy, green and black trail.
Elementalist – Changes based on attunement (swirling fire, water, lightning, or rocks). New particle effects on some focus skills. Leaves a trail based on attunement.

Axe – Hades

Precursor = Titan’s Vengeance

Appearance and effects:
As compared to Titan’s Vengeance, it’s larger, more intimidating, and double-bladed.
Banishes foes to the Underworld (engulfs them in flame while they scream) on killing blows.
Firey footsteps.
Explosive landings when falling damage is taken.

Hilarious, considering the Vengance in the item’s name is a misspelling.

I’d suggest something along the lines of the Stygian axe as a precursor, but you can’t improve upon perfection!
