It is a sad sad fact that there is a spot on my map that is the size of a starting area right next to Lions Arch on the left. I like to refer to it as “The Last Spot On The Left.” Tengu are guarding it and say that they don’t trust the other races fully yet so you cant enter. So my superb ability to put 2 and 2 together to get 4, leads me to fully understand that the Tengu are going to be a future playable race. Now I know without a full A-Net verbal agreement on this subject it is just a speculation. Seeing as this is one of my favorite races and storys of Tyria and Cantha whens it going to be released?

This could just as easily be a future expansion zone, much like Southsun Cove. Some kind of Tengu-themed expansion or event will be coming eventually, but I don’t see any reason to assume it’ll be a playable Tengu race just yet.

Eh Kodan are too much like the Norn. The Tengu are very very spiritual and honor bound much like most Asian cultures. It would be more of a change than the Kodan-Norn rip.

The Kodan and Norn are just WAY WAY too similar for me personally.

lol like never then? you need alot of skritt for one to be smart. one roaming around is just going to be a stupid dull dim witted skritt that cant count its own fingers much less say anything other than shiny.

My guess is Tengu will be playable with the expansion that opens the gates to Cantha. Maybe before if they introduce some event related to them.

Problem here is character customization. Kodan make HORRIBLE choice for playable race as every character will look the same. You can’t even customize the color as they’re polar bears instead of just bears.

As others said, Norn are too similar, and a Norn transformed into a Bear being extra powerful, but a Kodan in normal form (being also a were-bear) not, wouldn’t make much sense.

Imo, Tengu (they were going to be playable from release but were removed from the starting races, and there was a concept art showing different Tengu designs with feather schemes and distribution going through different styles so customization is more variable) and Largos (being introducted bit a bit in the game, with physical customizable features like their wings/fins, and a background that leaves obvious Bio options like House of origin) are better choices for playable races.

I think if any race will be added, it will surely be with a boxed expansion. The most likely would of course be the Tengu, but no one in the Anet camp has confirmed (nor denied in this case) our suspicions…

No i dont think it would be in a boxed expansion because of the simple fact of they have to open the rest of Tyria like Magguma and the Krystallll Desert first. Including the Tengu starting area which like I said before is the same size as Grove, Divinity, and Rata.

Tengus as playable are as Mesmers as sure profession before their reveal. Many were far too hesitant to admit it was sure (even though there was a tremendous ton of hints), but 99% of the fan base knew on their hearts that Mesmers would be the last profession.

I don’t know where, I think it was in the book with the collector’s edition but I’m not really sure where, I read that Tengus were planned as the 6th race but at the end they went with 5 instead of 6. They have their huge city, concept arts and probably a lot of plans about them, it’s a surething that they will be playable at some point.

I didn’t play WoW, but I’m told that the Worgen city was there for a very long time, completly innaccesible, and at the end the Worgen became playable with an expansion. There is a precedent in an important MMO if my info is correct.

Also, Tengu are very related to Cantha, so it would make sense for them to open their city at the same time they start needing help to get to Cantha once the communication lines are re-oppened with the continent.

Of course there is a possibility of them comming before in some kind of event, but I have the feeling it would be with the first expansion (btw GW1 first expansion came in exactly 1 year from release). If they can come faster, I will be really happy, but I don’t think it’s going to be that way,

Now not sure what expansion theyd be released in, if any, but it would be nice.

Before it was human with new profession. Now its racial+profession. So id assume theyd port the races traveling to cantha(if they stay in same sequence of continents) witha new profession but maybe that new prof will be tied to these birds. Just have to wait it out.

Btw theres a few other spots that are blocked off in travel but look to be accessable otherwise. Plenty of map space (crystal desert!!!) to add more before a boxed expansion so who knows. Its a whole new bag of content updates and im excited as long as it can stay populated more than southsun has.

On the other side of the wall, there is a young Tengu wondering when the other races of Tyria will be released. :-P

Short answer: no one knows.

Honestly, though, don’t hold your breath for a new playable race. There may yet be more races coming, though I seriously doubt we’ll see it in the first expansion. The amount of work and resources that goes into creating the whole “race” package is so disproportionate to the amount of gameplay the greater gaming community as a whole would get out of it. As much as I’d love to see a new race, I have to concede that ArenaNet’s time is better spent elsewhere right now. Frankly, I’d be more intrigued with a new profession, if anything.

For the tengu dance shall it be The chicken dance? Or even though its overtatted a bit gangnam style.

We don’t need new playable races at the moment, the ones are working perfectly fine in my opinion.

We dont need new races yet, that much is understood. But Tengu will most likely be released so speculating and having a conversation about it on this forum will let the Devs know what we think. Plus its fun to speculate with wide eyed wonder.
I think if anything when the Tengu get released their dance should be something similar to one of these two videos.

My gut feeling is that they will stick to a GW1 similar sequence.
Next will be an expansion for Cantha +New race (I REALLY hope Tengu, tengu thief FTW)
Then Elona.

But It’s also been suggested that Elona will come first since it’s connected with the land of Tyria and the situation is constatly mentioned in GW2 about the trade route.

If anything, I think the Tengu will become a playable race when Cantha expansion is released.

This. They already stated that there will be no new playable race or new profession in the next big add to the game. They aid January and February is in preparation for this new free add that will add nearly as much as some other game’s box expansion.

After that, I think the attention will be on a Canthan expansion and that will bring in the birds.

My prediction is with the Cantha Expansion (Probably the first one). They migrated there from Cantha because of all the problems they were having (the current emperor is a tyrant who has been doing mass killings on those who are not humans)

And that is exactly WHY, imho, it would be in a boxed expansion. One , from a business side, it only makes sense. Two, the dev pool it’s going to take to implement that surely isn’t going o be a free monthly update. It would be an all inclusive deal, the zones and the playable race. It only makes sense. That is a great selling point, no?

I mean, if it comes out as a free update, yay for us, but I am saying I don;t think Anet is THAT accommodating with monthly updates…just saying.

Well if you look at GW1 the content of Guild Wars Beyond was literally AN ENTIRE GAMES WORTH for FREE. People need to stop thinking that A-net is greedy like Blizzard.
