A really simple question here:

Why are you now catering to the gear grind crowd, via the new Ascended armour?

Aside from the fact that this is the whole reason I was excited about GW2, ie: the grind at Level 80 was cosmetic, not to stay competitive, do you not realise that the gear grind crowd is the most fickle crowd of people to deal with in gaming?

ie: You can cater to their every whim, but they’ll still drop you, like a hot potato, when they find “the next big thing”. Meanwhile, you will have lost all the people who were here for the game, and the lore, and not because it was just a break from WoW.

Well we need to play this part to be 100% sure , but i think they are actually going for the even worse path , making both sides happy.

What this will do is make both sides leave.

Because well , you cant make white = black. They are not the same color , and if people really like white or black , they are not gonna stay for gray.

But I just don’t understand why the basic premise of GW2 (namely that it wasn’t designed to be a gear grind because, without a sub, it doesn’t have to be one), has now been subverted and, within a few months of launch, there’s a new tier of armour with higher stats. I could barely believe I was reading about it.

It’s a massive mistake. And, if it continues with more armour in the future, will cause major issues among the playerbase.

Or does ANet need to see destruction and unhappiness happen firsthand in the community before they’ll believe a post like this?

I already know people who have typed /ragequit and are waiting to press enter. Since I only RP, this doesn’t effect me, but it will be sad to see good people driven away.

I think this is very subjective, and I think they will continue to add features across all aspects of the game to cater to the different audiences. Ascended gear is just one part of a very large set of updates.

They are still staying true to the world storytelling aspect of GW2 with both the Mad King and Lost Shore patches. There are full blown stories coming out with these patches. I do see your concerns, but am not quite a part of the sky is falling group. I guess time will tell.

Honestly , im waiting to check out on the update to be 100% sure of how it works.

But if they begin gear grind like WoW or they lock the max stats gear to dungeon only, to me that is it.

Story is fine , lore is fine … but so it was in SW:TOR … now it is free to play.

Gw1 you had to ascend (beat a baddie version of yourself) and then had to infuse your armour. It was so you could do some missions, it didn’t provide stats

To a large degree, yes. For some, they’ll want it just because it’s different. However, putting all of that aside, who at Level 80 won’t be wanting to run that new dungeon? You have to assume that more Level 80s than not, will want to run it. And, taking that as our premise, that means “most” Level 80s are now facing a gear grind that, once upon a time, was not what GW2 was supposed to be about. And we’re only 3 months in.

That’s the problem…!
