Q:

Hi guys, i was just wondering, why don’t you open a test server?

What’s the downside of having ppl testing your change for free?

OFC your QA team will continue to test it too but i believe a test server could be very helpful for you and the playerbase.

They have a test server, for those that were in the alpha test prior to launch and proved to be good testers.

Costs would be the obvious answer. Test servers require hardware and bandwidth, both of which cost money. Since there’s no subscription fee, ANet has to be as cost – efficient as they can..

Now, they stated in a presentation at GDC that they can run different versions of the game on the same physical server, and one can argue that someone playing on test isn’t playing on live. So in theory it could be possible. Probably requires some development though

Given the bugs introduced in the last patch, I hope they will consider it…

NCsoft has some of the best, biggest server farms in the gaming word.
Not sure if ANet got their own for GW2, but I can asure you making a test server is not a problem of hardware and bandwith for them.

I think the reason for no public test server is that they don’t want the content of the updates to leak before due time. PR reasons.

Pretty much. Sadly after watching games like LOTRO with test servers up since the start they generally don’t do much for the game or community unless the devs are actually willing to listen.

I’ve seen some terrible ideas in testing servers still get added to the game even after the general outcries of the community.

I saw screenshots on a blog of a person testing Southsun Cove before it became available to us. They mentioned the new gathering nodes and enemies, and that there were ori & orrian saplings there.
