Why stop at gloves?
I do hope they continue to add things like this. Them deciding to add hide/show gloves seemed random as far as I could tell, but I’m really glad they did. I’ve made a suggestion here that they add an option for boots to be hidden as well since it can be viewed as a complimentary feature to hide/show gloves and really fits into the fantasy setting also.
My main concern with a hide/show for tops and pants would be that others would abuse the feature and just run around entirely naked. Although it can be done already, it would really encourage it too much in my opinion and have negative impacts on others’ immersion. I think hiding hats/shoulders/gloves and hopefully boots is actually in good taste for a fantasy game. It also adds another layer of customization and a personal touch without straying too far from what’s already in the game (and it’s not entirely distracting/startling either).
We see shirtless Norn all the time though, and in another thread I mentioned my male elementalist friend was really striving for an Avatar look, so he fights without his shirt on all the time despite a large stat loss and losing out on receiving all of his bonuses from his runes. It’s a really good look, but on the other hand there would be people wandering around naked just for the sake of being naked.

This happened in Rift. At launch you could hide the helm and I think shoulders, after a while they changed it so you can hide all armor slots. From then on it was common to see pot-bellied dwarves and purple giants running around in nothing but their shorts. You learn to ignore it after a while, but I never liked it.
Yeah, I don’t really like the idea of everyone running around naked. But maybe at the least they could make boots hidable too. That way only pants and chest are required.
I doubt they’ll allow that. They seem intend to keep a class armor time as a recognizable visual identity hence the “no cross armor type reskin” and “no fighting in town clothes” stuff and the like.
Hiding the whole armor set would allow people to hide their armor type and make it harder to determine their class in WvW.
As I said in another thread, I think they should allow all slots to be hidden, but then limit it to two things at a time (if need be only allow top OR pants). That way there is much more flexibility, but without the naked issue. It also levels the playing field a bit in terms of suspension of belief. Why is it that a person with no helm, shoulders, gloves or (perhaps) boots, is getting more protection than someone wearing all of that and no shirt?
There are some really cool looks that can be achieved by removing top or bottoms that don’t involve making characters look ridiculous or kittenty. A topless male warrior is kind of a fantasy archetype, and some of the medium armour without pants actually works quite well as a dress/athletic outfit for female thieves etc. (adding shorts would have the same effect there). Given it requires no new outfits to be made, and it would actually reduce clipping, it seems a pretty easy way to allow for a lot of customisation.
Would be great. I spend so much time with the fur-design on my Charr and now I hardly ever see it. Same with the tatoos of my Norn.

I think hideable boots is better than gloves anyhow. A lot of boots look awkward on Charr & Asura.

Yeah, that’s why I’ve been advocating boots so much. I can see the feature being used a lot and I think it’s much less controversial than hiding pants/tops/aqua breather. I haven’t seen any qualms so far regarding boots, but with the others there are a few reasons. Class identity on the go is a major one. Helmets, shoulders, gloves, and boots really don’t identify a class immediately, but pants and tops constitute a major part of an outfit.
I really like Crash Test Auto’s suggestion to only allow a top OR pants to be hidden, but not both at the same time. Class identity is maintained and the character won’t be running around in their full underwear. The problem with that is it seems it would, potentially, take a bit more in depth development because of the underwear and the coloring scheme. With helmets, shoulders, gloves, and boots, there is only skin (hair/fur?) underneath. With the tops and bottoms there is underwear underneath for some races/genders. So to make an outfit look right they may want to add some sort of advanced underclothing coloring system before implementing a system where tops and bottoms can be hidden, possibly. Whereas with boots I would guess it could be done relatively easily — and look like a fully added feature — without it looking clunky (like the gloves).
Off topic: I was hoping this would be about future update / living story gives us a ticket for a helm, etc until a few months from now when we have an entire fused armor set!
Yes I was quite suprised by the added box to hide gloves, I hadn’t seen any requests on the forums for that, so how did that pop into their heads.
Was it a eureka moment at a meeting, guy (1) “I know what we’ll do, give players the option to hide gloves” guy (2) “Brilliant idea, lets get it done, I’ll get on to the developers”.
IF only fixing some of the class balance and game bugs was that easy.
(And why stop at gloves, if they gave you options to hide everything you lot would be running about in your underwear).
They won’t make chest/legs able to be hidden because it’s important in places like WvW to be able to identify what an enemy might be based on what they are wearing. Being able to hide gloves, however, is pretty cool for certain character aesthetics.

I want to be able to hide all the armor slots. It opens up more options, and that’s generally a good thing.
Yes, people will run around “naked”, but given that there’s always going to be SOMETHING on, I’m okay with that.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
I love this change and hope for more of this to come, especially since I have a Norn and I want to see my tattoos, and of course show off my muscles. And for my Charr, as our fur makes us stand out from the crowd.
As for the people who are worried about people running around naked, I think that being able to costumize your character this way really adds a personal touch.
The only thing I think shouldn’t hideable is pants.
People were worried about stupid names when they found out that you can have multiple names in GWII, but I have only seen a few silly names so far.
Plus, this will most likely make the artists push even harder when creating new armour sets, as they now have to look good enough for people to actually want to wear them, rather than being forced to due to it being the only piece that would match a specific set.

I think the only game that I recall ever adding a hide toggle on every single equip piece was Runes of Magic. Was a pretty cool feature. There’s not much reason to hide pants though. Hiding chest piece would cure my Thief of his trenchcoat/skirt curse.
No one would be completely naked. Semi-naked. At least females cannot go completely topless like in AoC.
There was a lot of agitation for hiding gloves in the first few months of the game. I’m very please to be able to do so now as it can enhance the effect of an outfit or keep you from looking silly with something big and clunky on your hands added to a frilly top.
Plus, for RP, now I can emote removing my gloves without having to haul them over to my bags!
I’d be looking forward to having boots and chest being able to hide them. I only say chest and not pants because, I have a shaman charr(RP) I have and I want a specific look for him, and since PVE doesn’t offer the tribal set it’s harder to find something that suits my the design i’m looking for.

Yah, I agree. Fortunately I was finally able to settle on a pair of fingerless gloves I found a few months ago. But now I don’t need them at all! Yay! I’m getting closer to customizing my character(s) the way I actually want them to look rather than what is available.
Hopefully they’ll take notice of one of these threads and consider patching in one or two more hide options while it is on their minds. I’m afraid if we stop mentioning it, any more hiding options will be forgotten about and it just won’t ever happen.
I really love the gloves for the fact that they are heavy looking on medium armor (kind of like se armor) and not just another trenchcoat for my engie. I would really love to see the full set of it, would be so awesome!

gloves are able to be hid now…not talking about the gloves from the F&F achievement

lol my bad, somehow my mind skipped over the hideable part.
My asura would definitely appreciate a boot toggle!
Chest and boot armour toggle plz

Heck, why stop at hiding? I have a top that hides my gloves.
GIVE ME THE OPTION TO SHOW MY GLOVES OVER MY TOP.
As long no one suggests toggling underwear.

There had been several requests for this (and toggleable boots) since beta, but unlike mounts, raids, duels and gear grind, people weren’t starting new threads every other day.

I’m afraid layering would be a lot more difficult to do and isn’t really in the realm of possibility for the near future.
Hopefully this thread will manage to stay afloat among all the nerf/buff/mounts/armor threads.
I would also like to see more clothing pieces having a hide option. It’s true that now that we have it for gloves, boots only makes sense. As someone who likes coming up with interesting looks, I would also like to see it for chest pieces and pants.
I know this would encourage running around naked with the benefits of armor, but it’s already a fantasy world. Armor in itself makes you powerful in ways that can only be attributed to magic or enchantment (stats). Why can’t you make the next logical jump and say that it’s the magic/enchantment that matters rather than the physical clothing so much? It may be annoying for some people to see others running around naked without stat reduction, but they can’t say it truly ruins the immersion for this reason.
The only area I could see that might be a problem is WvWvW, where identifying your enemy beforehand is important, but aside from knowing if they are using light, medium, or heavy, you really can’t tell anything else for sure just from their armor alone. The definitive answer always comes from something else. If this is still seen as such a huge problem, though, they could just remove some of the hide options for WvWvW.

Taking character themes, summer, and tattoos into consideration I hope they will implement some of the ideas from this thread. Maybe they can put some restrictions on WvW or such if they find it necessary. I had forgotten entirely about Norn having tattoos; it’s probably because I never actually see them (with exception to the NPCs).
