All about WvW!
* Flame Jet - make it’s cone of fire more wider (especially at start point) and maybe, more longer (up to 600 as Guardians staff#1). I’ll agree if this effect will be added to the Juggernaut or Deadly Mixture traits.
* Flame Jet - reduce casting time from the 2.25 sec to 1.75 sec, but with the same damage and number of attacks
* Flame Jet - improove maximum affected targets to 5 (as Guardians staff#1), because now it’s only 3! WTF? Is that AOE more powerful than another classes AOEs? Not, it’s weaker! Add this to the Juggernaut trait too.
* Flame Jet - fix it’s kitten MISSes everytime if target a bit aside from you!
* Flame Jet - make 0.2sec burning to the each tick, not to the last one!
* Flame Jet - this skill due it’s mechanics CAN NOT be affected by Reatliation more than once per 2 seconds per target.
* Napalm - remake it AOE-mask from line to circle with 240 radius.
* Air Blast - make the cone of fire more wider and effect more visible. And you can remove useless burning enlanger.
* Smoke Vent - make this effect more visible and let it will leave field of smoke with the old radius (180) for 5 seconds (like 5th skill of thieves offhand pistol)
* Icendiary ammo - decrease cooldown of this toolbelt skill to 15 sec at base, or remake it into something more useful in comparsion with other toolbelt skills.
* FT base attack stats must be equal to rifle! Now it’s equal to exotic pistol, even if you have exo rifle equipped. And it equals to the ONE pistol! Even two pistols have bigger attack, than two-handed flamethrower!

This is so shame:
You hitting 3 targets under retaliation. Retal will hits you for 300-350 per hit!
So, 10 hits for 2 seconds multiple by 3 targets equal 30 hits.
Multiple it by 300 equal 9000.
You will hit yourself for the NINE THOUSANDS damage while your targets will recieve only 3k (4k with crits!) each.
Earlier we have compensation in Omnomberry food, but now...
Air blast. It will add 2 sec of burning to the already burned(!) targets. Great. So, I’ll do 1st channel of the FJ , then push my targets... out of cone of fire of the FJ ? Who that "genius" who created this?
Mechanics of the "bla-bla by crit (N sec cooldown)" triggers/food/sigils.
It will works only at ONE target from ALL, affected by AOE. You can use FT toolbelt - it will burn only 1, maybe 2 targets (coz only 3 hits, blocks/misses/evades included, lol). Guardian procs - only 1 target or zero (the same as for IA but only 1 hit). Path 1 trait - only 1 target (coz 3 sec CD). Napalm - very easy to evade from it’s lol-low area and, for sure, noone with brain will not stay in it’s flame.
Last tick of the FJ cause burn for all targets, ok. By ONE second! But FJ lasts for 2,25 sec. So will have +10% damage boost only for half-time. In the another words they buff FT damage only by 5%.
Food for Cond Dur? lolwut? Power engi need to eat food for condition duration / damage? Where is logic?

How can liquid flame do not cause burning at every tick? Let it will add something around 0.2 sec of burn with EVREY hit. It will not IMBA, but more handful, than useless IA toolbelt.

How I can blast napalm sphere at the any distanse? Am I installed remote control to it? More logical if it will blast at the 1st collision.

Why FT toolbelt have so big cooldown? Bomb or Grenade toolbelts have 2 times lower cooldown but deals 2-3 times more damage and much more useful! IA must have 15 sec CD, not 60!

If you run with a flamethrower, than equip a pistol and shield (you will get shield bonus to armor in your stats even while holding the flamethrower). As the flamethrower is a tanker style of play, they just assumed you would actually equip the shield it seems.
Right or not, it is just what I notice din the stat spread.

Why engineers so underpowered? kitten Elems only in favor: they have power more than thief and survivability more than tanks. Also, incredible speed options and group support.

The engineer isn’t underpowered, I think you just need to step up your game. Runiir’s post wasn’t off topic, he was trying to explain to you a better way of using the flamethrower as an alternative to your suggestion you posted. I have watched many engineers play just as effectively as any other class, it’s just how you use it.

You are also quite right, the engineer is incredibly powerful when in the right hands.
Put your turrets in interesting locations and people don’t look for them even though they are being taken out by them (rocket turrets and rifle turrets are great for keeping a downed player from self healing).
Elixer specialists, and the elixer gun itself, can be used to support any build…or can even be your focus and you can increase the abilities of your entire team (mind you the effects being rather random) or you can even opt to not use the elixer gun for favor of the healing kit to help your allies even farther.
It is even possible to build for both the flamethrower and the elixer gun, swapping between the two of them as needed with NO COOLDOWN. This gives you 3 weapon loadouts with no cooldown to swap between them, allowing the engineer to have flexability in fitting to any situation that an elementalist can only dream of. Usually I run the world with my flamethrower, charr shout, and elixer heal/elixer buffs acting like a warrior setting fire to the world. If I know ahead of time I am walking into a rough situation, I dump the elixer buff and grab the elixer gun so I can swap between damage burn and support ont he fly at any time with no cooldown (which is what ele’s suffer from).
Sure, engi damage is not as burst as others, it is however consistent (especially with the flamethrower) and our support capability is impressive, especially if you know when to use what.

So I’ll show you something: Warrior, Elem able to deal 3-4 times more damage than Engi at the SAME range, Elem able to deal that damage at 1200 range too.
This and that - with better mobility and survivablity. Elem and Guardian have incredible group buffs.
You are said: FT - defensive weapon? What? LOL? Even Berserker D/D Elem have million times more defensive abilities than FT-Engi! So stop posting this, please!

I use the flamethrower in WvW mate, and I’m pattentedly saying that I do just fine as is racking up kills and surviving. Nothing to brag about (people bragging in WvW are basically like being 1st in the special olympics, at the end of the day you are still very very slow…it is zerg on zerg combat in any meaningful battle in WvW) but also nothing to complain about.
You’ve been playing engi how long and only manage 3k damage with all buffs? Every class can crank 5k hits if you build glass cannon while using the weapon designed for it(here’s a hint, to do that with an engineer you DON’T use flamethrower). The problem here must be that the fire belching weapon you like the looks of just isn’t built around spike damage, it is built around consistent damage. Use the weapons for what they are built for…this is like guardian or warrior complaining that hammers don’t attack fast enough.
Also a hint, I didn’t attack you. You just tried (while failing miserably) to attack me, virtually ensuring that the devs never take you seriously.
I however do agree with the other poster that flamethrower should not be so easy to dodge, the spray either needs to be wider, or have increased damage to compensate for how easily dodged it is currently. Barring that, it needs better tracking.
Our weapon "designed for it" was Grenade kit. Yes, it was cool. Even with all it’s bugs and stupidnesses (slow fly speed, it was projectiles without any combo-finishers, crazy grenade spread at the long distanses, etc).
But they are nerfed it like... I dunno..
5k with FT? You are in GC against another GC? God, maybe playing in low tiers not so bad? ... Anyway in that case you will die much faster. Especially GC thieves will glad to meet you.
So stop flood. FT needs in BUFF, Engi needs in BUFF - that’s it.
@Runiir: Riffle has more damage than FT on glass cannon build. Other toolbelt (Grenade, Spanner, even elixir gun) is much better than FT right now.
TLDR: FT need more buff, make it tankier, or make flame wider,
Always thought it was bizarre that Smoke Vent doesn’t create and actual smoke field. And the AoE limit of 3 is just dumb. It’s a cone attack, which already makes it tougher to target with than other AoEs that don’t suffer from the same restrictions, and the range is quite short. If you can manage to get five targets lined up in it, you shouldn’t have to deal with this arbitrary restriction.
Flamethrower doesn’t need many changes really
Just a few to make it awesome.
Flame Jet – Reduce channel from 2,25 to 1,75. That’s the only thing it needs. By that dmg will jump a lot. 3 targets is fine. Keep the same number of hits as is though! so 10 hits in 1,75 instead of 2,25.
Flame Blast – FIX THE BUG!!!. Make it 400 range so it can be used on shorter range as well. Right now it’s pretty useless with anyone in our face and 600 range does not fit FT 0-400 range (or 425?:D)
Air Blast – This skill is actually perfect. AoE knockback/interrupt with Projectile reflect. It reflect projectiles for ~1,5-2s after you use it and is pretty good
Napalm – ….make it as it was in beta…. Make it add BLIND besides burning. Or make it circular and add cripple to burn
Smoke Vent – Give us back Backdraft or give it bigger radius, and pulse 2-3 times. Increase CD if needed.
There you have it. FT is now perfect.

FT only needs some tweaks i mentioned. Cutting channel alone will dramatically increase DPS. FT also has added burn, can proc a lot of stuff “on crit” even with low crit chance due to frequency, has 400 range unlike melee weaps.
It’s not bad. It just needs quicker channel on #1. Rest as mentioned in my earlier post.
Flame Blast for example hits like truck with proper build but is really buggy (as in i did 8-11k crits with it and aoe)

WvW holds no power for balancing. sPvP is what matters. And for sPvP purposes changes i mentioned are sufficient.
How many hours on engie you have and what is your win % in tournaments? PvP rank? How much you invested in playing sPvP?
My main is Engineer, I usually play him at least once per day. I play him in PvE, Fracs, and WvW, since launch day. I also have a character of every profession in the game.
I would suggest not discrediting the advice being given to you in this thread so quickly. Some of them are giving you pretty solid tips on how to compensate for the issues of the flamethrower, I can’t for the life of me figure out why you’re being so defensive. They’re not trying to hijack your thread, only help you out.
Engineers are simply not designed for massive burst damage, unfortunately. I don’t think we’ll ever be able to pull it off on par with a class like Elementalist, however, we also don’t have the huge cooldowns Elementalists have to deal with.
We can do things Elementalist and other classes can’t even dream of.
That said, we are a nerfed to hell class right now. And Flame Thrower is a huge GOUT OF FLAME hitting things squarely in the face, it would be nice if it did a smidge more damage than it currently does, or at least some other form of compensation to make it a little better, like other posters mentioned above me. Right now, the only reason why I use it instead of grenades is because I find it easier to use on the move, I have problems with my hands and eyes that make grenades a bit difficult for me.
But what I really want? Since I doubt my profession is going to be fixed properly any time soon, I want to actually like to be able to hit inanimate objects with Flame Jet. Good lord, you think that would have been fixed by now.
Some peoples dislike if someone will ruins their sweet dreams...

“dramatically increase DPS”? Not, it’s just 20% - most classes able to increase their dps up to 50% with only traits in the useful trees. Especially Elem and Thief.
425 range? Is it unic? Maybe in their shortness for RDPS only...
D/D Elem have the same range. Warrior have nearly the same range. And this range are nothing in WvW - just 1-2 more steps. Nothing special.

Funny, my flamethrower must be the exception; I destroy everything with ease and have some of the highest sustained damage around. Maybe the problem isn’t the kit, but rather the build you are using it in? Just a thought.
That said I do agree that the constant “miss” spam on the screen if you’re not perfectly alined with your target is annoying could stand to be fixed. But really that is the only issue with the flamethrower. Also the whole “three target max” thing is odd to me, perhaps it is different in PvP; I’ve not tested it against large groups of players so I can’t say, but in PvE it burns EVERYTHING. Way more than just five targets.

I have a Flamethrower build and I haven’t had any issues. FT is crazy mobile if you have any idea how to move your mouse. I’m constantly running around things burning them to death and I do pleanty of damage. I’m so happy they fixed the napalm, the was the only really issue I ever had with FT. The burning buff with air blast is sweet too.

If you want to go tanky, Go bombs. Elixir fused bombs will heal you and has a smoke bomb for more tankiness. Flamethrowers fail at that.
Flamethrowers has always been about damage. Which is why FT doesn’t get perma stability anymore but more stacks of might. It doesn’t make sense for a melee weapon do less damage/control/support than a range weapon.

Listen man I know what you are going trough. I am playing an engineer for 3 mounts now and have tried hundreds of build seeking my ultimate engineer. I have tried many only-turret builds and sadly I had to accept there is no such thing as a dedicated engineer. Then I discovered the Flamethrower. Wow, a short range but a decent AOE weapon. However I got to level 80 and the damage was laughable compared to other classes. So i tried the HGH build (Might stacking + all elixirs possible) and still nothing. I even sold my soul to the devil and got from COF vendor the Berserker Set and I applied Ruby Orbs (power + Precision + Toughness). Incredible, I was squishy as hell and my damage couldn’t pass 4000… ONLY 4000 !!! When a kittening warrior passed 30.000… Oooh boy… the disappointment… the curses that followed.
Then I said ok **** YOU engineer and I leveled a Warrior to 80. Had the damage but It wasn’t fun… I was missing my gadgets and mobility. Using a sword all day long was boring as hell and I decided to return to my Engi and try again.
What your colleagues are trying to tell you in the posts above is that Arena Net did not designed the Kits as stand alone weapons, and vice-versa. The engineer is the most versatile class in-game but also the most situational. Yes, the Engineer design forces the player to make a combination of weapons and skills. I admit that sometimes it feels like 10 fingers are not enough to operate something this complex.
Your suggestions are very decent but I doubt they will happen very soon since we can use the pistol for 1200 range and the switch to Flamethrower when we get close to the enemy (and push him back and again release the pistol skills, etc).
The same goes for bombs, grenades and any other Kit. The developers have their share of fault – the engineer thread is full of documented bugs with videos as proof and still nobody bothers to take action. In the meantime we have to make the most of what we have: a Weapon set, Healing Skill, a Kit, a Gadget and an Ultimate. Combining these will result in a dynamic and competitive gameplay.
PS: if you still use the Flamethrower as your only weapon, get P/P or P/S for the sigils!! Yes, the weapons sigils now apply to our kits as well. Go for a Sigil of fire (extra napalm every few seconds) and sigil of strength (overall higher damage).

Still, they should do something about retaliation with flame jet. Getting more damage than the one you dealt is quite absurd. Especially since they’ve been nerfing every means of making use of those fast attacks.

Also, Greandier: 3 greandes*5 targets = 15 different hits (or 15*350=5250 selfdmg) evey 0.5-1 second.
Engis nearly useless and suicidal class for WvW now (I mean massive battles, not roaming!)
