WvW names.
I approve of this message. WvW is fun, but it lacks the adrenaline rush of open world PvP. A huge part of this is that it really does feel like you are just fighting NPCs.
I agree. I would definitely enjoy WvW if there was a stronger sense of community and friendly competition. It’s incredibly boring to feel like I’m simply killing NPCs all day.
To clarify and make it more simple for Devs to implement. It would only be necessary to be friends on both ends to speak in whispers if the person is trying to speak cross server. Whispers and friend invites would continue to behave normally within the same server.
Hopefully more people decide to comment on this and bring attention to the issue.
I don’t WvW much, but the Devil’s Advocate might say something like:
It would be too easy to see the actual strength of the opposing force, if you could tell how many were real players and how many were (typically weaker) NPCs.
As it stands right now, a player can “hide” amongst NPCs and call for assistance if the enemy shows up in force.
Since you generally have to wait for movement to tell the difference between an NPC and a player, a raiding force might attack what they suspect to be a camp full of NPCs, only to be routed when they discover real human defenders in the mix.
…Or aren’t there THAT many NPCs in WvW? Like I said, I haven’t done much of it.
Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.

Nah I prefer it the way it is now where you know the server and guild but not the name, I won’t pretend I have any real experience in this but I don’t imagine that soldiers are stopping to ask enemy soldiers their names in the middle of a battle.
Ham – No, there are not many NPC’s in WvW and no…nobody confuses them for real people, ever…yikes.
Goat – We’re talking about PvP in a video game, not warefare in real life. In this video game, there are people that stand out for one reason or another. Usually in an MMO, these people are known and its fun to fight them, or with them, etc. In that way, it would be more akin to movies than actual warfare…and the enemy knows rambo..james bond..etc.
PS: It’s fine if you disagree with the suggestion, but at least have experience with the content and/or a basic functioning rationale when responding to a post.

FYI when I said no experience with I was referring to real warfare, I have played WvW and was speaking from having played that.
I don’t think names are necessary for what you said either. As it is you currently can go on what server they are from, what guild they are from and what their character looks like. That is plenty and more than enough to go oh I have faced you before.
Havent read all the posts, so in case it was mentioned before, sorry.
I understand the OPs point of view, however I must disagree with the implementation of names into WvWvW for the simple reason: Trolling / Bashing / Namecalling.
PvP is much more competative then PvE, in this game there is no such thing as PvE competativeness (Thankfully), meaning no more KS / Boss Camping etc. But there are players that focus soley on PvP, sometimes there are players here that take things WAY to serious and believe they are the BEST OF THE BEST, giving them names to whisper opponent teams will only give them a doorway to herrassing that person, Some have a thick skin like me and don;t really care, block em and let them rant, half the time i start crying of laughter, but there are also younger (and older) players that have a very bad expirience with bullies and can hurt them emotionally if this happens to them, of course this is pretty much worse case scenario, but the way the system is now it nicely prevents this from happening.
But this is just my opinion

…
I see that issue too, but that would be fixable: implement a “mute” or “ignore” function, where can ignore comments from a specific player either forever, for the match, the day…
The only issue, that this wouldn’t fix, is that specific people could be called targets by certain opponents. And that would be not good, but then again, the battlefields are quite large, so that one should be able to avoid confrontains like that…
I would also prefer to see, who I’m fighting with. Like above mentioned right now, it feels too much like fighting NPC…
In a game where you can not switch servers except every 7 days… How exactly would this promote trolling? Someone switches over to call someone a name and they get blocked by said person. Done. Now that person is stuck on a server away from their friends for a week, because they wanted to say 1 sentence before being blocked? I doubt many would be willing to so that.
This would be rare for the same reason that giving misleading info in WvW by swapping servers quickly died, it’s inconvenient when there is a 7 day timer on switching servers.
There is no down side unless you’re like goat and believe less information is better for no reason what so ever.
Names were available in all varieties of pvp in gw1. General chat was nothing more than a flame fest, with a few gg’s at the end of a match. Really dont need that crap in every game again. If you like that kind of stuff good for you, but most people dont.

Are you unable to read in some way, or are you just unfamiliar with how guild wars 2 works? I’ll use small words.
You can not talk to the enemy.
Nobody is asking to talk to the enemy.
I hope those were simple enough statements to understand. The only way you would be able to talk, would be to swap to the enemies server, send a whisper, and get blocked, which would leave you stuck away from friends for a week.
As proven by the change in people swapping servers to give misleading info, this will not happen due to the 7 day limit, it’s just too large an inconvenience.
I understand not reading replies to a post, but at the very least, try and read the OP before you respond, that way you don’t appear illiterate.
Only reason I Like wvw is because you can’t see who is who I would prefer to remain anonymous as I don’t like straight pvp but this I can deal with wvw and have fun with it

Gods…
Anytime people are treating as WvW as PvP. It´s not PvP, just a kitten go alone all time in WvW to look for other player alone and duel PvP.
It´s a big GvG, a real big one. What´s the matter if a zerg kills you? It´s not a player, it´s a zerg.
I can´t see nothing good coming from knowing the name of my killers because they don´t kill me, the zerg kill. And if I´m exploring and eventually get killed for someone I get angry about that I want to tell the person who his mother really are. Knowing these peoples name just make more grieving than necessary. For me and lot´s of people will be better to never know.
An don´t come with “you can not talk to enemy or asking to talking to enemy” because if they implement, this is just what will happen.
Lore-wise, it sort of makes sense to have no names show up and here’s why—
In the battlefield, you don’t know your enemy’s name except who they represent based on their uniforms. Here’s a picture of some military servicemen:
http://www.newcombat.net/images/misc/iraqjoes.jpg
Notice that they don’t have blue names above their heads. If anything, their name tags would be on a small dog tag either around their neck or on their boot, but you wouldn’t know their true names from a distance because those tags are very small and usually concealed. The only way you could identify them is their uniform, which only tells you what they represent, which is the US military in that example picture. In WvW, your enemy is identified by their team colors and if they happen to be a Commander or not. If they belong to a guild, their guild logo could be displayed on their backpack or shirt.
I suppose you’re wondering then about the display of names in sPvP. Unlike WvW, sPvP represents arena-based combat. In arenas, chances are that there’s a silent announcer that has probably introduced the names of your opponents to the audience of The Mists. In a way, it’s more like combative sports, like MMA, Boxing, and Wrestling (even the fake ones on Monday night). All you’re missing is your chest-pumping entrance theme music. In my opinion, the real grudge matches amongst rivals happen in sPvP, not in WvW.
On the other hand, I do think a name could be shown for certain players who have displayed their seasoned status on the battlefield over a certain period of time. That would be the only reason I could think of why a well-known name would be shown in WvW. Sort of like …. “I am Commander Puntt, Asuran Warrior extraordinaire, and experienced punter of many Norns and Charr! I have destroyed many keeps, beheaded many commanders, pillaged various supply camp, and blew up any siege golem that has crossed my path! My name has been very well established throughout all of the Mists and everyone trembles in fear when they even mention name of the Asura that has demolished large zergs, single-handed!” … or something like that.
Other than that, if you haven’t really established yourself in WvW, then you’re probably just another Invader.

I would like all the names removed. To me they only serve the purpose of being a huge “KILL ME, HERE I AM” sign. Try doing something as simple as hiding behind a tree to ambush someone when you have a huge bright text over your head.
Alright, I give up. I honestly had no idea the people in this game were so terrified of being identified. Are you people really so fragile that the thought of receiving a single rude whisper before you can block someone frightens you so? Knowing that would be an absolute rarity and the person is now stranded for 7 days?
How.. Sad. Forget the suggestion, people are content to hide.
Yeah we are fragile and you are the ubermaster of control.
Don´t try to measure thousands of people by you. If you don´t feel mad for receiving a rude comment, it´s good for you. but when you have THOUSANDS of people that can be affected by this it will never be good.
And if you think only on your behaving… remember THOUSANDS.
There is no down side unless you’re like goat and believe less information is better for no reason what so ever.
Not for no reason, it doesn’t give you any real benefit, especially with all the anti troll measures they would have to enact because of it.
I prefer not knowing the names of my opponents. If I did, I’d be liable to look to start identifying players by how effective they are and go 1:1 on the bad ones and run from the good ones. (sPvP is a better venue for those good players who want to run towards good opponents.)
I also don’t find any benefit based on the OP’s description: I never feel that I’m just killing NPCs. I do feel that I am fighting against other, equally anonymous players.
That said, I might support a modified suggestion: make the system opt-in only. Allow every player the option of displaying their name to opponents in WvW.
People just have to stop thinking on old style MMOs.
In F2P and Subs mmo you have a steady source of incoming, so you can hire an equip just to enforce the anti-troll measures.
This game is a P2P without subscription, it need to work on the minimum possible. If they leave margin to people start the rage wave there will be more work without more people. To a system like this works it´s necessary to implement every type of anti system breaking, so they can use their resources to developement and fix.

The 1st paragraph is the best argument I heard so far.
The last paragraph gives also a good solution. Plus it was never intended to be a one-way interaction, where you can get flammed by one (or more) opponents.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the ideas was: you get a whispered invite from an enemy, you accept or decline, then you can chat. If he’s flaming you, put him instandly on ignore and he/she/it will not bother you any longer. Simple.

+1
you can say whatever u want, but for me chatting with enemy is the best way to find PvP (party) friends. after the first fight you know how he play and you know who is he, how he behave when he lose.

Precisely. That’s the system suggested.
I would be fine with the suggestion of it being an opt-in option. If you want to pvp anonymously, you could.
I am 100% positive the most skilled PvP players would opt in and that’s really the point after all.

Typical rude and abrasive response when such suggestions are not going in OP’s favor. If you bothered to search, you would have seen many suggestions like this, with the OP making similar comments to you when a number of posters are against them.
Signed, I want to see my opponents name and I want them to see mine. It encourages rivalry and excitment to make the game much more fun.
I can’t see anything bad coming out of besides trolling which can be easily stopped with a mute/ignore.
This game needs rivalry. Lets see those names in WvWvW!!

It was neither rude nor abrasive, it was the simple truth. Are they not terrified of people knowing their names and possibly seeking them out to deliver a few harsh words before they’re blocked? Let me guess, your response is… No! It’s… Just their choice! They don’t want to chance being harassed!
If so then nobody should have an issue with the opt in feature. Showing your name only if you choose to. Ah but you and they most likely they wont like that either, why? Because then comes the fear of looking like a coward because you’re not revealing your name.
I don’t care if people disagree with my post, at all. As long as the reason for their disagreement is valid. Only 1 single person posed an actual response having to do with pvp, which is people avoid some while running from others based on reputation.
The rest? Citing baseless fears in incoherent sentences or “lore” and “because in real life…” Scenarios. It’s ridiculous. This is a video game. When I make a suggestion about a feature within a video game, I expect gamers to reply with the knowledge that it is indeed a game.
And again, in regards to the fears of trolling and abuse, we have already been shown that with the new time limit on switching servers, people really aren’t bothering with that kind of behavior because its inconvenient to be stuck on a server for 7 days after you’re blocked in the first minute of trolling.

Exactly I don’t know why everyone forgets about the block/ignore feature.
Actually, this idea could work to improve the community. We’ve seen the lengths ANet will go to ensure the safety of the players, and the enforcement of their rules.
From reports of banning due to inappropriate names and chat, I’m willing to bet that if this system went through, the idiots, griefers and trolls would be banned in short order.
All you would have to do is report them, and they receive the 72 hour ban. Therefore the only downside to this idea is that we would have a better community. I can live with that.
I agree!
I want to see my enemy names and you know what I want my name to be seen also. It would bring about more excitement into the world of WvWvW. You could build up a rivalry and maybe Anet could add in a kill list or something like a rivalry page or a Battle stats page or something where you can see who kills you a lot and the same can be said for who you kill a lot.
I do not see any bad coming from this because of the mute/ignore option.
Lets hope that this gets done!!!

They already have a team to enforce their community policies; and they do a very fine job. They keep the community clean.
And if you think there is not a continuous income stream for ANet from this game, then you are completely mistaken. The gem store provides plenty of income, people spent a ridiculous amount of money on black lion keys during the mad king event.
If there wasn’t a plethora of income then we wouldn’t be seeing as frequent updates, most game companies have a large amount of lay offs after release, ANet is actually HIRING.
If you have something legitimate to add then by all means do so. I understand that not everyone will like this idea. And if there is a legitimate complaint then I would like to hear it.
Being concerned about griefing isn’t valid because of the awesome community team, just report the greifers and they will be banned in short order.
Being concerned about nasty whispers isn’t valid because you can ignore people. And if these people were going to send you nasty whispers, just wait until you see the things they do to your dead body.
Brilliant idea! I fully support this. NPC killing is not what WVW should be about.

Thanks for the support, maybe one day it could evolve into a rivalry page ^^ baby steps though, baby steps.
