As I play less and less frequently, I think I’ve identified the small annoyance that wears down my enthusiasm: the teleport fee.

1) I login after a few days. I decide on a new activity. I pay $ to teleport there and start adventuring.
2) I play an hour or two. Usually, character death makes for a good “stopping point” for the evening.
3) I pay $ to teleport to nearest camp to sell inventory and repair, then I logout. I realize almost immediately afterwards that I probably spent half of my earnings on teleport and repair.

So every single time I play (and yes I have been an occasional player in recent weeks), I end up feeling unenthusiastic about my time in Tyria because of being “taxed to play”. It’s a small and nearly insigificant issue, yes, but it is the one issue that keeps coming to mind when I wonder why my enthusiasm fizzles for what is obviously an interesting game.

1) The obvious solution is to make all teleports free, but that idea isn’t very creative.
2) Another solution is to make the first 3 teleports in a day free of charge, but that also seems boring.
3) Instead, I propose making only teleports within a zone free. Then add one special portal to each zone that has a match in the nearest racial city; and that teleport is also free of charge. That foot traffic (as people use racial cities again as travel hubs) would bring some more immersion into the game. I haven’t visited my ancestral home in ages. (Why waste the teleport fee to get there and back again?) You can still pay money to jump instantly across the world to any waypoint.

Travel for occasional players should not be a disincentive to playing again.

Hey,

To me teleporting costs are insignificant because I earn enough dosh from selling loot when do things around areas of a map. However, I do agree with you on that teleporting within each zone should be free – at least the first couple of times.

The cost its self is scaled based on the level of the character. Similarly the cost of fixing broken equipment is scaled based on the quality of it.

In the end the ammount of dosh you earn from doing things offsets the cost of traveling.

I posted elsewhere that I thought having to pay a way point fee when your character died, then having to pay for repairs on top of it, was a double jeopardy issue. I don’t mind paying the fees for the way points but hate to be double charged upon death.

I suggested they make an automatic way point to the closest one when you are defeated free. But you don’t get a choice of which way point.

Hi, me again. I was gone during the holiday break. I came back this evening to play again. Apparently the camp where I last logged out was only temporarily safe. All I know is that it was contested this evening when I appeared there.

I logged in and died immediately. I paid to teleport to yet another camp. I skipped repairing the damage. I just logged out again.

Yes, penalizing occasional players needs to stop. See you next week… probably.

My idea would be to make it so that the first teleport within 30 mins is free, but subsequent ones within the same period cost increasingly more until it caps out at 1 silver (amount negotiable) per teleport. As time goes by without you using a WP, the price scales back again. (Which means that to reset the cost from 1s to nothing, you’d need to go 30 mins without using a WP.)

I wouldn’t mind changes to the current system, but at the moment I am mostly pleased.

A few tricks that will save you a bit of money.

You can gate for free to any of the 5 racial cities from Lion’s Arch. You can get to Lion’s Arch for free by going to the PVP zone “Heart of the Mists” and walking a few steps into the gate.

So if you’re ever just going to Lion’s Arch, or to a place close to one of the starter cities, you can do it free of cost.

Maybe a gem store item that deletes the cost of waypoint travel could work? I’d pay 5 bucks to make waypointing free. Call it a “Wayfarer’s Pass” or something. Like a bus pass.

I would personally like to see less waypoints on the maps… why have an open world game if you are essentially to to fragment it almost into instances?

I mostly RP and even when I am playing the game the way most people do, my focus is not on earning money or trying to be efficient about spending it. If I want to balance my checkbook and pinch pennies, I can do that iRL.

Teleports within zones being free would just result in people going to the edge of the zone, walking to the next zone, porting to the edge until they get to either destination, essentially free of charge.

There’s tons of waypoints, so if you want them to be free, the only realistic option would be for them to cut down the number of waypoints to like 1 per zone.
