so they tried to monetize sPvP with the custom arena starter kit
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Custom_Arena_Starter_Kit
1600 gems for 30 days.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Custom_Arena_Time_Token
then each token adds 1 day
150 Gems for 5 (30 gems per day)
480 Gems for 20 (24 gems per day)
it has been more than a year since release, still no news of guild halls.
what do we have?
lots of gem store items for sale.
- gem store armor skins
- gem store town clothes
- flutes
- music boxes
- continue coins
- etc
now, what if, they introduced these items:
(note: the following are merely some general examples, to stroke the minds of fellow forum goers to spark some discussion, strictly not suggestions)
“Guild Hall Starter Kit”
- allows you choose from a selection of starter guild halls
- 30 days of guild hall rental
- 1600 gems
“Guild Hall Time Token”
- each token adds 1 day to guild hall rental
- must use guild hall starter kit first to rent a guild hall
- 150 gems for 5 tokens (+ 5 days)
- 480 gems for 20 tokens (+ 20 days)
price it the same as sPvP Custom Arena Starter Kit and Custom Arena Time Token. i.e. 1600 gems, 150 gems, 480 gems.
then all additional guild hall upgrades require gems to purchase to unlock.
i think upgrades are best at one time unlocks via gems, not further rental. the 150 gems / 480 gems should be more than enough for the ongoing rental upkeep.
let the players have some sense of ownership.
some examples

with this, they can finally start working on guild halls, since this will greatly boost gem sales to facilitate on going rental upkeep of guild halls
any “pay to win” argument is invalid, because you can buy gems using in game gold.
the goods:
1. guild halls!
2. we can rent guild halls!
3. the upcoming new guild feature 5% tax will be useful
4. golds to gems rate will increase
5. people who buys gems with dollars to convert into gold will be happy
the bads:
1. cost gems
2. golds to gems rate will increase
3. people who buy gems with gold will not be happy
4. rent only, no buy. no real ownership
5. poor guilds cannot afford guild halls
the uglies:
1. people may complain on the forum
2. people may start taxing guild members
3. guild members may refuse to pay tax for guild hall
4. people may only represent guilds with guild halls
5. guilds with guild halls may be come more elitism
so, people, what do you think?
lets hear your opinions regarding this matter.
if guild halls are bought using gems, they will definitely start work on guild halls.
everyone, come! (spoken with risen voice)
discuss!
no need to thank me.

after some discussion with Louveepine.7630,
instead of buying, renting, unlocking everything with gems, maybe a middle ground arrangement could benefit both parties?
say, for example:
1. buy and own guild hall with non-gems (influence, merit, gold, etc)
2. unlock additional convenience, cosmetic upgrades with gems
