I think one of the problems we have right now especially for smaller servers is that the upgrading structures tend to be put the whole cost on a single individual per upgrade. I think a more effective system is to allow people to donate towards each category of upgrade available for that structure. from a minimum of 1 silver to a maximum of the full upgrade. I think a lot of the time, people don’t want to be the one to cough up 1g+ for the last t3 upgrade but do not mind donating lets says 1-10s for the cost. If each person had the ability to do that, then we would be able to upgrade the keep in no time through team contribution.

There isn’t much room for abusing this system too, first you’ll have to make it that only people who donate can have the option to choose which upgrade to select first if they were the last person to meet the quota). Most upgrades now have to be upgraded in the relative correct order anyways i.e. reinforce walls before you can upgrade the guards or higher tier merchants. I think this would promote a much better system as a whole for players to contribute to the wvw cost.

The inhabitants of a WvW map should be taxed per upgrade. For example after reset all “Quartermasters” start collecting taxes, that is a given amount of cash is deposited to them per map scoring tick. As a camp/tower/keep is upgraded the amount of coin collected increases as after all they are living in a greater degree of luxury. That money can be used by Commanders to purchase further upgrades from the Quartermaster or even common (not superior) siege blueprints. Those blueprints are different in that they can only be used within a given radius of the Quartermaster they were purchased from so prints from Hills Keep could not be used in the Bay keep. A log is kept of which Commander ordered the upgrade to avoid cross server griefing. Finally, if the objective is captured the coin on the Quartermaster is reset to zero.

So if you want upgrades to go faster you spend your own coin but if your population is small there will eventually be enough coin on the Quartermaster to pay for the next upgrade.

Are you seriously suggesting that people should lose money just by being in a WvW map? That is a horrible idea!
Really the whole upgrading system ought to be changed – it shouldn’t cost money at all. Wouldn’t it be awesome if they linked it to the guild claimer and made it cost influence?

No…if they did that then they would just be inviting all the trolls to claim places, leaving the entire server with no hope of upgrading. That is a terrible plan. In fact, I’ve never even had any issues with the current system.

My idea would allow more than one guild to claim an objective, and rather than simply talking to the NPC to claim it, you would need to order an upgrade.

Your idea involves a lot of unnecessary changes that really don’t help at all in the end. They would have to rework the entire system for what reason? Besides, I think you may be forgetting the fact that it is implemented as a gold sink. The whole idea is that it does take gold, not any other currency.

I like this idea of being able to donate. As for how upgrades are selected, I think that a player should be able to donate his funds into any upgrades that are available. Whichever upgrade gets fully funded first gets started and whatever money was donated to other projects are mailed back to the owners. Maybe reward WvW XP when an upgrade gets fully donated and constructed based on the proportion of their donation?

Example: Supply Camp

You can upgrade for caravan guards or extra supplies. You talk to quartermaster and see that Caravan Guards is 50% funded and Extra Supplies is 30% funded. You put in the minimum donation of 1 silver for each upgrade and continue playing. Another player comes by and donates the rest to complete Extra Supplies. Extra Supplies starts construction and you receive the 1 silver you donated to Caravan Guards back in the mail. Extra Supplies finishes upgrading and you receive 20% of the total WvW XP because your 1 silver donation was 20% of the full cost of 5 silver.

Personally I’ve never felt any desire to contribute any gold to upgrades. Call me selfish but it doesn’t seem at all worthwhile, so for me at least it’s failing to sink any gold. Surely a good gold sink is one that actively encourages you to spend? The gem store does that really well. Taking a few gold from a handful of people in WvW (not a profitable area) doesn’t seem very effective at all.
