Free trials are awesome times when someone can try out Guild Wars 2 to see if they want to invest the time, sweat, or money (and tears!) into the game. It also provides frauds and scammers access to the game, which is normally just a petty inconvenience. Free trials are both awesome and highly annoying at the same time.

If you don’t know the reference to the subject line of this post, consider yourself extremely lucky. You can reference the attachment photo for humor. I have been getting hit with mail after mail after mail of “i love you! Buy our ‘goldz’!” from the moment the free trial went up. I block the user, report them, and then move on to the next person and you can see that my block list is overwhelmed. They are usually located in “Defend Shaemoor” or the other starter quest for whichever race they have created and so I have absolutely no clue how they managed to round up my name. Regardless, I was told by ANET that I had to post my suggestion to these forums for them to actually take my complaint seriously. Yay.

So here I am and here are my suggestions for future free game-trial weeks:

1) Disable mail for free trial accounts,
2) Give us the ability to block someone from the mail message (the scammers are now using alt-codes to make fancy names which have made it increasingly harder to block),
3) or, in the alternative, give us the ability to control our mail by having an option of only accepting mail from users on your friends list, or from specified users, etc.

Honestly, I don’t know why a free trial account would need access to mail to begin with. Aside from receiving mail from starter NPCs, which you could still allow them to get, who are they honestly going to be sending/receiving mail to and from? You can even give them an NPC disclaimer for when they check their mail for the first time that states that they do not have access to the full mail system.

Being able to block someone from the mail message is purely a convenience, especially if the first option never gets implemented. And that goes for the third option as well. I am just tired of the flock of birds I get when I first log on, when I’m doing an event, or when I’m in a dungeon. I have also been accidentally deleting mail from guild mates as I am rage-clicking the delete button, so it’s been quite a nuisance.

tl;dr – for the love of Rytlock, please disable the mail for future free trial accounts! Scammers ruin it for everyone! (also, feel free to mock the small amount of gold I have in my bank, jajajaj)

That is totally unacceptable. Seriously Anet? We HAVE to make a forum post for it to be even looked at? Smh.

And Tzinoka, I agree. They should have better restrictions on what trial account can do. Or at least make it so the trials can’t send mail to someone, UNLESS they are added friends with each other. And you aren’t alone… I have a few others on my friends list that are getting spammed relentlessly with this nonsense.

Yeah, I’m not sure why it’s only targeting some people either, as I personally am not having this problem, but many people I know are, and I feel bad for them as it is annoying.

The picture attached is what happens when one sends all the mail away.. this was only a small fraction of the birds that flew by, and on only one occasion.

you could use your block list as a way to find new passwords….

I agree with this. The easiest options would be for ANET to -not- allow trial users to send mail until they have paid OR simply allow us the option of blocking them from mailing us.

We use this same system on another forum/paid game that I am on and it works WONDERS. I just block trials and I don’t get spam.

Basically.. they should DO THIS!!

I completely agree. I know it’s hard to track and block spam, but in this instance it is something that AN can control. Spammers make tons of free accounts to spam the heck out of players. Disable free accounts from sending mail. Yes, they may try to SPAM in Map Chat then, but then the player has control by not viewing map chat. Or blocking Spam player accounts from whispering them. Come on AN, you can do so much better than this. =)

One of my guild mates took a screen shot of all the mail birds I received after a bounty one day.

:/ And judging by the lack of comments from any GW employee on this subject, it looks like I have to submit another support ticket. Much good that will do. :/
