making town clothes appealing in 3 steps
Yes please. People keep asking for this, hopefully they’ll eventually give it to us.
I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.
I say NO, keep the town clothes exactly that TOWN clothes.

I say NO, keep the town clothes exactly that TOWN clothes.
And your reason?
Edit: can’t say immersion when you have people shooting rainbow horses from their longbow with the ANet logo on them or any of the other legendary weapon effects. Or the harvesting pick that causes a lava explosion. So if its not because of immersion, then why not?

please note, i don’t want them to be usable in combat. i just don’t want them to go away because i was in lion’s arch and fell an inch too much, or decided to go for a dive. or, in the case of southsun, was moving from the resort to another part of the settlement and got hit by a random karka.
the key point here is “i can do this already, but it’s cumbersome. streamline it”. i can keep toggling my clothes back on, but after a while you just won’t bother, because it’s freaking obnoxious to do so. when i want to fight, i’ll put my combat gear back on my own. we have a button for that already.

I agree with everything you have said with one addition a check box for “force town clothes” which would have a skill 6 “return to normal” like the tonics/costumes are so anything that happens except for combat would keep the town clothes.
I really like the idea of making town clothes show during activities.

How is the game going to tell one type of damage from another without a ton of coding, so that it knows when to remove the town clothes and when not to? Pretty much you have to keep the system in place now or completely revamp it so they become outfits that can be worn in combat.

Considering that we have functional traits for fall damage, there is some fall recognition already in the game.
make town clothes usable in combat
make bikini town clothes
battle hordes of monsters in a bikini
3 easy steps
It really does make sense to have ‘town clothes’ also used for the mini-game activities such as, of course, crab toss. These are also perfect opportunities to show off what you might (or might not have) invested in town clothing.
You aren’t in a combat situation and wouldn’t be wearing armour or using weapons. You wouldn’t wear pyjamas into town now, would you? :-)
They should have an option that auto switches into town cloths whenever your in a town, then maby I’d actually use them more and buy them from the gem store, otherwise their useless to me.
I see they did add a hotkey option lately but its not enough, they should stay on me whenever I’m in a major city and not go away every time I take falling damage like from the jumping puzzles in lions arch.

4) Make a decent selection of town-clothes available as in-game rewards/purchases…
Remember the idea that any clothing you see an NPC wearing in town could be your own? :-(
A shame fun things could not simply be fun.

Just because they are called Town Clothing does NOT mean town only.
*Only combat should force players back into their armor.
*Only PvP activities like Crab Toss, Keg Brawl should allow town clothing.
*Instanced Jumping puzzles should allow ton clothing, unless there are combat elements.
*Fall damage does not remove town clothing
*Add more activities areas in the open world for town clothing.
*This is a MMORPG, meaning Roleplaying Game
I don’t see the problem with people wearing town clothes into combat; alot of the light armor and some of the medium armor looks like clothing already. If they can enchant a trench coat and a hat to protect me in a fight with a Karka, then the magic’s there to do the same with a shirt and jeans.
Some people are worried you’ll have players dressed silly as hell, in holiday costumes or whatnot, but:
1) There’s a lot of silly in the game – Cowtapult anyone? (I’m not complaining)
2) Being able to dye your armor about anyway you like, if someone wants to look silly they can do it without town clothing.
3) What if wearing clothing in a fight is appropriate for their character – and/or (as 1) the clothing is magic? (I carry a burning book on my back after all)
Taking all that inta consideration, I see no real reason not to allow it.

Honestly they could do whatever they want with town clothes and costumes if they just added a single button in to the game.
( X ) Role-Playing Mode
This would be a display option which would hide anything non-canonical like unicorn arrows, quaggan backpacks, and costume brawls. Don’t care about game immersion? You don’t have to use it. But if you do, you have the option.
And I think the idea for doing activities in town clothes is awesome by the way. And I’m not even a fan of town clothes and would likely never use it, it just sounds like a good idea.

even though there is a way, as pointed out by another poster, they don’t have to, and in fact, shouldn’t have to.
i stated in the OP that i would like it if town clothes remained regardless of what kind of damage i take. that doesn’t mean i get to fight in town clothes. that means i get to run away in them (because if you fight every single mob that attacks you, it’ll be forever until you reach your destination).
so if, for example, i’m moving from the resort to another outpost in southsun, a single rogue karka shouldn’t strip me of my town clothes with one hit of those annoying projectiles. if i want to fight it, i just switch to combat gear manually and do so.

i think the main reasons town clothes shouldn’t be worn in combat are these:
1- sigil and rune functionality. correct me if i’m wrong, but right now, your runes and sigils have no effect while you’re in town clothes. that alone would require a lot of system changes.
2- it would devalue the GW2 endgame, which is, among other things, finding a set of armor that you think looks cool. if you can just buy a costume and wear it in battle, then you have no reason to bother hunting down all those awesome skins. and no, mix and match town clothes with combat gear is not an option, because that would require reworking a ton of stuff, and would be outright stupid (hoodies with gauntlets and helms)
.
.
.
i say leave each set of clothing for their respective functionality (combat gear for fighting, town clothes for leisure), but right now, town clothes are too cumbersome to keep wearing, and locked out of a lot of leisure content, and that’s what i’d like to see change.
What’s the point of auto-switching to combat gear when taking damage? I see that as an unnecessary protection and definitely immersion-breaking. If I’m in town clothes, I expect that my stats are reduced to base, as if I’m wearing no armor (‘cause I’m not). If I get hit, so be it. It’s up to me to try and recover.
In order for town clothes to really take off and become popular, people need a reason to switch to them. But I’m for keeping town clothes and armor separate, meaning no town clothes in combat.
