ok what about a Priest class?
A Priest would however have some ties to religion/gods and that would make it quite limited, since several of the races don’t have gods.

You mean like a guardian, only contradictory to the lore? No, thanks.
there was such a class in gw1 called monk, it was the dedicated healer, or he was able to prevent de damage before you got hit, and he could also smite enemies with holy power, but a dedicated healer in this game would contradict the principle of gw2, no trinity.
and actually there is no need for such a role with the gameplay we have now. everybody in a way or another is able to heal self and others. the problem is most player won’t care about healing others with their skills and much rather prefer to dps (and we all still survive).

the thing is monk was limited in combat last i remember. but i thougth of priest to be more battle or least have ability to least defend it self but most of its skills deal with stuff like the water rune in one of the weapons when you crit you create a healing aura for few second type effects. and frankly religion is not stuck with one race in truth anyone can see the light and stuff. the Charr that go into priest mostlikly are gladiums looking for hope or better life then sitting in slums. and lore wise we know the these Gods exist. i mean abbadon you fight agins thim in guildwars 1 and lore wise forgot who but she replaces him when defeating him.
Here is a Eurogamer article explaining why they made a Guardian instead of a Monk:::

It should also explain pretty well why a priest class doesn’t exist.
