Hello,

I love your game but please consider removing character level scaling or at least part of it.

I love crafting and right now I’m trying to get cloth and its hard and very slow when my level 20 character gets scaled down so rather than aoe farming 10 mobs at a time for materials, I’m having to again fight them 1 on 1, which is very VERY slow for gathering materials and also gives me no sense that my character has ‘progressed’ since he was here before.

No, simply because many people myself included enjoy not out leveling the content in the game. I enjoy having new friends start up and getting to group with them as my main and not start new characters, I enjoy knowing that even though I’m 80 and have all this gear I still can’t go lerrrroyyy into situations thinking there is no way I can die.

Thanks Anet – for allowing me to play low-level characters with no lack of mobs to kill because over-leveled characters are farming the area for craft goods.

Sorry Steve, but I think it’s a great solution to a really old problem. And your character has progressed. You should have new talents and abilities available, better gear, and should still be able to easily handle 2-3 mobs if you’re using the appropriate weapons or aspect.

Level scaling was put in the game to make all content challenging at all times. Now once you hit 80 and have a decent set of gear, Masterwork works just fine, you can pretty easily run through lower level zones and round up 10+ mobs and own them with little effort.

Consider this: 10 level 80 burning everything in the path of the newly made level 10’s because the level 80’s want to farm, leaving the level 10’s with a map full of corpses and no way to kill some themselves.

*edit: I should type faster :p

Steve – Guild Wars 2 is putting responsibility of the player into the game. In other games they become “god-mode” because the player is so outragously powerful.

What you should do, is to make some money by gathering materials, then make some stuff, try to find out what mats should be sold, and then buy stuff from the trading post. Most people buy things at very low prices at trading posts.

They do not want farming in this game. Thats for games like WoW. They want this world to be dynamic.

yeah not being an over level character place in a lower level area is a good thing and I’d rather have them keep it.

If the true was to be done for you being under leveled and going to an upper level area where youd be upleveled, that would be great also.

I agree with everyone except the OP, this part of the game is great. The fact that I can go back and still have a challenge while helping out my friends that are new to the game or are making alts is awesome. I hope this never, ever, ever changes.

Slow down and smell the pixels.

This seems to not be absorbing into some players’ minds. They don’t seem to grasp that ANet wants to curb, not just botting, but overfarming in general, and that’s what the latest updates are designed to do. Now, those updates can stand some tweaking and adjusting to make them not impact unfairly on players who play the game the way it’s meant to be played, but I see where ANet is coming from and I think they’re fundamentally on the right path.

That’s why there is level scaling. When you are level 20 and have to back and farm at a level 5 area, you ruin a level 5 player’s game while farming. So you have to face things under the same conditions as a level 5 player.

This is called justice.

I am actually surprised we don’t have this. Upscaling in CoH worked wonders and basically anyone could play with anyone regardless of level.

I guess I can understand that to some point, I wouldn’t want to spoil anyone’s fun, thats for sure.

But when you need a mountain of cloth, its pretty depressing to farm it at what is a low level. I would buy it but the amount I need and the price it is, I simply cannot afford it. is this Anet’s way of encouraging gold selling?

Anyway thanks for the input, I guess I’ll have to do it the very slow way :P

Don’t know how much cloth is on the TP these days, but you could try farming the level 70/80 areas for orichalcum for example, then sell that on the TP and buy your cloth with the money you make.

I’ve been able to keep my crafting up to level without having to go back and “farm”.

Make sure you’re using the discovery pane, you will level crafting a LOT faster that way. Wouldn’t want to be trying without it !

Also – Why should it be easy to make money? That’s a stigma from other games with horrible inflation. I love how money is really worth something in this games. In other games I would have 100 gold by now. The costs for repair and fast traveling takes it’s toll on you.

In this game you need to be smart if you have 30 silver and want to turn it into 30 gold. Not since SWG/EVE have I seen an economy this much fun.

Granted, economy is not really steady yet. when they remove free world transfers and pop settles down(3 months!) then we should be able to see things more clearly.

I’m sorry, but i 100% disagree with the sentiment of this thread.
Downscaling has got to be the best feature in GW2, as it has always been my pet hate in any MMO, that once you get to max level, 90% of the game is useless to you and becomes underused by the entire community, it’s such a dreadful waste. But Gw2 has gotten rid of this for me, and i find it fantastic, especially now that i don’t feel constrained to what zone i can level in, or what zone i can farm DE’s in etc.

Besides, imagine how ruined the game will be, wehn you’re leveling a new character and some level 80 comes along and one shots every mob, forcing you to receive, either, no reward or most definitely a bronze.

As others have said, sell higher value mats on the TP and use the money to buy lower value mats. If you need a mat that sells for 20c and you sell better mats for 1s then each sale = 5 mats you need.

As for downleveling itself, working as intended. Eventually people will get the idea that this is not WoW and was intentionally set up so that you cannot play it the way you play WoW. When people learn how NOT to play WoW then they’ll enjoy the game a lot more. Or go back to WoW and let us enjoy the game instead.

This has been the only MMO I’ve played where I’ve actually enjoyed playing in the lower level areas on a higher level character. I hope they don’t change the down-leveling at all.

" gives me no sense that my character has ‘progressed’ since he was here before."

that isnt true, you are stronger than you were before, mainly because of traits and gear.

yes you go back in lvl and can’t one shot everything, but you sure are stronger than the first time you did it.
i’ve noticed it alot because i like to play with my friends, and they can’t play as much as i do, so i go back ALOT to lower level zone, and there i always feel that the zone is much easier, its much harder for me to die and everything dies faster, but isnt a overpower god mode thing, which makes it even fun for me and my friends to go back and lvl then.
