Q:
The mysteries dissapear and life stands explained.”
Q:
Do the sylvari feel cold? Or any temperature at all?
As I’m currently writing a background for one of my sylvari characters this bugged me.
If I recall correctly, there is an npc in the grove, a female sylvari who talks about the norn area and how she didn’t like it because of the cold. (can’t look up the npc atm as I can’t play right now)
However, checking the wiki:
Sylvari lack thermoreceptors in their skin, as they cannot feel the cold and are not affected by it.
So what is it?
A:
Sylvari do feel cold (and other temperatures), but they’re not affected by it in terms of risking frostbite or hypothermia. It might make their muscles feel locked up, or slow down because of it but it wouldn’t hurt them. A Priory member in… Either Lornar’s or Dredgehaunt, I think, I forget, mentions that the cold doesn’t bother her at all, so it can be individual how Sylvari feel about it.
I think I remember another sylvari in the norn area that mentions how cold it is. she walks along the road in the low level map.
But I find it odd that the NPC sylvari that do walk around the Shiverpeaks don’t seem bothered at all. They don’t try to wear warmer clothing.
Here’s a thought: several plant species do react to colder temperature, but they don’t actually ‘feel’ cold like we do. Maybe the sylvari definition of cold is perceived differently. So if a human says “the shiverpeaks is cold, and maguuma jungle is hot,” the sylvari can best relate the difference by how his/her plant senses feel. That way they don’t actually feel cold, but still uncomfortable in it – until they adjust and adapt?
I think it slows them down, makes them feel lax. Kind of like an insects primitive nervous system, the obvi diff being sylvari aren’t primitive.
There’s a Sylvari Priory member at the Priory outpost in Snowden Drifts who says she’s not affected by the cold at all, so perhaps it’s individual preferences as to whether they find the sensation uncomfortable.
It may be determined by what plant they most are. if they have qualities of plants that can easily survive in cold environment they may not be affected by it but if they are palnts that tend to be more tropical, they may be the ones who find it uncomfortable.
I guess athuria answered my question best, though the other suggestions make sense too.
Thanks everyone for the kind answers!
My sylvari reacts to being chilled by saying in a shivering voice: “Brrrr! Freezing…”
It sounds like he finds it an unpleasant sensation.
