Do any of you find the female sylvari attractive? I think they look kind of weird. The male sylvari has a few looks that is pretty cool but I haven’t met a female sylvari that makes me look twice. The Asuras are the opposite where the female Asuras are adorable but the male Asuras are ugly. I like the Sylvari race concept but wish they have better looks though.

I think they look amazing. They are plants… they are not going to look normal… weirdness is a part of their beauty The more plant-like, the merrier, to me

What do you find off with the looks of the female sylvari? Also, what looks do you find that you think look cool with the male sylvari?

Some looks can look far more human and others can look very creature-like with the female sylvari.

In the end, though… I think the best-looking race is the Sylvari (Norn ladies are a close second). And I really do like the look of both genders of the sylvari.

If anything, I wish they looked — and were written as — MORE alien and inhuman, because making them human-cute severely diminishes their uniqueness and the simple fact that they are very much NOT human. That is why I use the branch-face for my guardian and the branch-“hair” for my elementalist, and clearly non-human coloration for both.

I agree with this.
I have tried making none sylvari characters but I always end up regreting not making them sylvari.
Just like Lorelei, I think both genders of the Sylvari race looks amazing.

They aren’t supposed to be inhuman-aliens. Well, Perhaps Malyck could have been written that way if the writers and developers had really thought his story line and differences from the other sylvari through far enough. But the thing that makes the Sylvari interesting is that they were modeled by the Pale Tree after humans and other humanoid species (the Norn). If you want inhuman-aliens, then look no further than the Asura or the Charr, because both of them qualify. And if you want truly inhuman-abominations, then your playing the wrong game. You should be playing Call of the Cthulu instead.

Plus the entire Sylvari Culture is steeped in Arthurian and Celtic Romanticism.

Who says I want “abominations”? Not-human-cute does not equal Cthulhoid monstrosity, either physically or in terms of mentality and behavior.

Sylvari are not just colorful Arthurian but gender-egalitarian almost-humans. They are plants with a totally different biology from us mammalian animals, they don’t breed as we do but emerge fully mature from a singular source, and they have the Dream of Dreams, their empathic connection and Wyld Hunts — all things that are completely alien to humans.

It just looks like we approach the whole species from opposite directions. I see and love those alien aspects and wish they were more pronounced and emphasized, because if I wanted something human I’d play human. You see the more human influences and like those over the “alien” aspects?

The fact that they haven’t bred successfully with each other up until now, does not indicate that they are incapable of breeding successfully with other species on the planet. Whose to say that if they were to have relations with a Treant type creature (as unlikely as that is to happen) that they wouldn’t have an offspring. And whose to say that their biology is completely incompatible with humans, or norn. They certainly look compatible.

The fact is that as of now, they have only (to my knowledge) attempted to have relationships with each other (other Sylvari). As far as I am aware they have not attempted to have romantic dealings with any of the other species as of the moment. Whose to say what would happen if they did.

Also, the concept of the “Wyld Hunt” is not that completely Alien to humans. At least not here on Earth. Here on Earth, the concept of the Wyld Hunt has it’s origins in ancient Celtic Mythology where the Sidhe practiced it almost constantly. And for that matter so did the Ancient Celts. So it is not that unusual.

As for how I approach the Sylvari. I see them for what they are. A species of plant creatures that are heavily influenced by the concepts that are usually associated with the Aes Sidhe (the Good Sylvari) and Unseelie Sidhe (the Nightmare Court). All of them however are heavily influenced by the Sidhe of Ancient Britain. Which is why the Sylvari are easily my favorite race.

Asura and Charr are humanoid as well. They have the same amount of limbs and they are all in the same place as well. If the charr could and would not walk upright I would consider them alien, there is not even a walking animation on all fours.

My female sylvari is attractive and my male asura is quite handsome to my eye btw.

The Sylvari attractiveness is there, but falls short of Humans and Norn for me.
Now attitude wise I absolutely adore them.
Physically though I’m more interested in the non green versions because of the multitude of colors I can be given.

that seems stupid, especially in the case of the Human and Norn species who are almost identical in every regard except for size and the Norn’s inherent ability to transform into animals…

Additionally it has been stated that the Sylvari do have the necessary naughty bits to have sexual intercourse in both directions. What makes them different from other races is that it remains unclear (because it has yet to actually happen) whether the Sylvari have the necessary organs to reproduce or not. Any given animal or species can have sexual organs necessary to have sexual intercourse while also being infertile. Such circumstances happens in our own species here on Earth afterall, there are humans who for whatever reason cannot conceive children.

Devs confirmed that sylvari sexual organs work but they lack the “reproductive organs” required to reproduce in the ‘traditional manner".

The reason for this is because sylvari aren’t "people made out of plant materials’. They are plants that have grown to imitate the look of people. So the internal workings are not the same. sexual organs on a sylvari aren’t really reproductive organs. They are bundles of branches, leaves, petals, stamin, etc. that imitate the look and physical function. Just as sylvari arms aren’t wood bones with leaf skin covering them. they are bundles of branch and leaf and vine that imitate arms to provide the practicle mechanical function of arms.

On human and norn similarities, norn used to look like giant dwarves. I suspect that the extreme proportions of the male norn are deliberately there to seperate human looks from norn looks to make it more clear that they are two different species.

To answer the original OP, I think the word attractive might be the wrong choice.
I have 4 female Sylvari and I find them amazing and captivating, beautiful and incredibly aesthetically pleasing- attractive in a human sense does not apply to them in my mind because they are plants- not tree elves or leafy humans.

Interestingly I started playing the game at launch with 5 humans because the other races either didn’t appeal to me or I found them too hard to identify with.

I fell in love with the Sylvari when I made my Ranger and at this point I have only 2 humans left.
While I love the characters and will never change them, they just feel so dull and fleshy and generic compared to my Sylvari.

really I could make infinite Sylvari’s- they are the most unique/fresh race in a game I have come across and I love them.

Well, see, when a male Sylvari and a female Sylvari love each other very much, and they are both in bloom, he will touch is stamen to her pistil. If they’re very lucky, some pollen will stick, and travel down a tube into her ovum, where a seed will form. She then plants the seed, and nine months later, the sprout comes.

Very interesting read. I never knew Syvari are plants that imitate humanoids. I thought they were simply half human half plant like creatures. So the pale tree gave birth to all of them. It would be sad if someone cut downs the Pale Tree and the race will go extinct.

Indeed. That is why the Pale Tree is so important. However, it is unknown if another Tree could produce Sylvari as with plants, there is not normally just one seed.

Edit: Even if there were another Tree, there is not another Ventari’s Tablet, which is what the Nightmare Court so desire to destroy. And, certainly the Tablet is important to Sylvari culture.

As I recall, there was also a Sylvari in the story line, that did not come from the pale tree.
His origin remained unknown.

Ultimately it comes down to personal preference. You may not find them visually or even dare I say, sexually attractive as someone else might. They aren’t meant to be humans, but on that note they aren’t meant to be ugly, they are supposed to be attractive in their own little way. That being said I tried really hard to make her look like a think twicer:

I don’t think Sylvari are as attractive as humans, but I don’t play gw2 for those reasons. But I sure as hell don’t think mine is weird-looking.

Anet has the appearances run the gambit, and given the sylvari concept (plants in the form of humanoids), it’s obvious that at least some of the options are going to be weird. One of the most notable qualities which is associated with beauty is symmetricalness. All of the male face options and 7 out of 10 of the female face options are symmetrical. That said, there is only one (female) face option which I would go so far as to call “human looking”. They are very beautiful, just not humanly beautiful.
