I love that new hairstyles were added to all the races! Most are even pretty cool looking. I am sad though, because the one new hairstyle I really want for my sylvari has a thing that makes me not want to actually use it. :/

The hairstyle in question doesn’t use your chosen hair color as the hair color. It uses your SKIN color instead, and since I use “light pink” as my skin color to have a human-esque looking sylvari it ends up being like a lot of the racial armor. :/

At least yours is more colorful. XD My Sylvari is gray-skinned and his skincolor nearly consumes the entire leaves. :s Still unsure if I wanna use it or not.

I love that style so much, it’s perfect for my ranger, I’m just going to have to fiddle with my rangers skin colour first :-/

I kind of wish it used the hair color as well, but at the same time I can see why it doesn’t.

They wanted the flower to change color, not be one static color all the time. Which means the flower has to use the hair color. They also wanted the flower to stand out compared to the leaves, which means the leaves need to be a different color than the flower. So they can’t have the leaves use the haircolor, or else it’d all blend together. So the only remaining option was to have the leaves based on the skin color, since Sylvari don’t have 2 hair colors (main hair and accessory) like other races do.

I’m actually in agreement with that as well.

@Electro Huh. Yeah, it occurred to me as I was reading the responses above that Sylvari don’t have an accessory color option like the others. I wonder if that’s because of the glow effect?

Still, I personally would’ve liked to be able to use the hair color here, even if it was an option just using the same model so that there were two versions. I still really like the new models overall though.

It’s because you’re dealing with things that normally grow off of sylvari. Thats why the roots/attachment sites of your cultural armors are the color of your skin, to give the illusion that you grew your armor.
Same case here, anet is trying to give the illusion that the leaves are growing out of your skin, hence why they are partly colored as your skin color.

I actually like this aspect of this particular hair the most- it is the flower I have a problem with because I find flower bit is a bit too monochrome compared to the leaves.
In the end I didn’t use it because the flower looked odd to me.

I desperately want to use the fern hair but I need to save up for a character slot

Not sure why you would like to look that human-esque as a Sylvari. I do get your point, though. Many skin colours (especially red, pink, orange and yellow) have something greenish as secondary colour. However, that’s what makes Sylvari look so plantlike. I personally like it.

There is at least one pink which has white as secondary colour. Maybe thats more suitable for you?

The flower-hair indeed is a bit difficult when picking colours and you might have to adjust your skintone. But you can do great stuff with it. I am also surprised how cool the pine cone looks. I really enjoy testing out different set ups. Loving it. However, the long hair – which I adore – does not fit to most cultural armors on males

Looks good, I love that hair too, though i bought it for my female guardian, but fits a guy really nicely too! (but I have a thing for long-haired guys anyway) Only thing i don’t really like about this hair is that from a front view, it kinda makes the character look bald.

They’re probably going to release the new faces separately either because they aren’t all finished yet, or because they’re hoping to get people to double-up on Hair / Makeover kit sales. If they released them at the same time then people could just buy one Total Makeover kit to change both, this way they’ll get people buying hair kits for the hair now and later on get people buying makeover kits for the face.

i think using a skin tone makes it unique and interesting. looks like appropriately mimicked sylvari hair to me

Heyo everyone!

Just wanted to pop by and let everyone know I am still forum lurking, like I mentioned on the livestream a bit ago. I’m glad everyone seems to like the fiddle fern hair and I am reading feedback for the flower hair. The reasons for its dye layout have all been listed above (Electro and Arrow Storm, you guys get +1 internets!).

I tried to explain this in the livestream, but I don’t think I adequately got the entire point out. By having it behave so naturally, it does take up a dye channel, so I have to be creative in coming up with ways to make the design feel full. The bringing in of secondary skintones helps with that a lot. But until you guys pointed it out, I didn’t even see the “bald” sorta thing, it just looked like a swept-back hair to me. Still does, but I get where you guys are coming from and will keep this in mind for the future.

Personally the flower hair is my favorite because of the flip and I had a lot of fun with the petals. It was my “Mary Tyler Moore” homage and if anyone was particularly astute, you’d see it was in the upper left corner of the sketches in the livestream. ;}

Oh and incidentally, because I’ve seen it mentioned—the hairs were all made new for the release. The sketches were over a year old. I wanted to enthuse that many of the things you guys had on your wishlist were the same I had on mine!

I don’t think the skintone bit needs to be changed, it just needs another leaf or two in the front to make a clear beginning to the hairline, as the male version has. Is there any chance it will get that?

I loved them all, I was just dissapointed that the face we saw on the live stream didn’t make an appearance I saw that face and just pictured it on my Sylvari Ranger right away and I think it’ll suit his new flower hair which I personally think is amazing.

I wouldn’t suggest completely removing the existing one, as it would only step on other people’s preferences. I just wish that an alternate coloring layout were available. :]

As to those earlier who asked “why would you go for a human skin tone” on my sylvari, the answer is that there are things you can do with the sylvari options you simply can’t do with human ones. Here’s my current look ^^:

I particularly love the arm patterns and proportions, and the glow. Much love for the glow though it doesn’t show in the screenshot above. The hairstyle and differences even in voice clips during combat are all things I prefer over human styles.

I’m also amused at how rare (understandably) the use of this skin tone seems to be. I’ve had a few people ask me how I got to look the way I do until I explain I’m actually not playing a human.

Some folks may have picked the hair style because they loved it as is. To change it for one may change it negatively for another. So in general, it’s very difficult to get big design changes like that done once it’s out in the wild. I don’t know if adding more direct secondary skin color is possible, but I’m pretty sure structural changes are right out. ;{

I’ll just be sure keep hairline concerns in mind for the future.

How about something that’ll help qol across all races and most all hairstyles……..allow us to dye the accessories. The extremely limited color selection that we are stuck with permanently is rather depressing to say the least.

I rather like the new hair styles, but I don’t like how they dye up so to speak.

Below are a picture of my sylvari when I created her and one with the new the flower hair. I have picked the same hair color on both, and the end result looks very different color wise.

I realize there is some amount of green in my sylvari’s skin tone, but I think it dominates too much with the flower hair and I don’t like the way the actual flower dyes up. It lacks the pale pink that dominates the original hair style.

It is a matter of taste I guess

I honestly love this hairstyle because it happens that one of the sketches i made is very identical to it, and sure i’m using it on my Sylvari.
I never had the feeling my sylvari looked bald though… There’s only one thing i’m not really a fan of on the overall hairstyle, the leafs are awesome, but the finish line getting the flower colour, doesn’t feel right, even cos my sylvari is light green and i decided to create it after a rose like plant, so the leaf’s borders are red…i’d honestly have just taken a shade of the skin colour and darken it a bit on the leaf borders. But well it’s fine, i love it the way it is. Now, i’m not really gonna ask for a change because obviously, after something is released the devs can’t change it, unless it’s a beta test, pleasing every1 is impossible, and we have to accept that.

After all, and making a stupid comparison, there are ppl out there eventually saying gw2 sucks, still we have gw2 community loving it. Would you agree if the devs changed the whole game because those other guys out there are complainning while they won’t event play the game? I don’t think so.

(I merely went through efforts of writting this because i’v been cross reading the sylvari forums, and i see some ppl beeing way to demanding when it comes to some issues, and this hairstyle has been the main one…)

Now, to finish this post, and i hope miss Perry reads until this last paragraph, I’m thankfull for the new hairstyles, thank you for the efforts on trying to please us and building accurate content related to our wonderfull race. I really admire your job, and i honestly, at some point, wish i had as much knowledge as you do in order to come up with this awesome hairstyle 3d models, just so i could step out of the paper. But well that’s not my studies area, maybe someday i’ll learn.

I just didn’t feel like my original red color matched well along side my skin color on the leaves. So I dropped all my red/orange colors for white and black, and everything still glows blue.
Now he’s more of a winter Sylvari. Looks pretty cool now,
I’m happy with my skin color; never changing it. :o

As I said, I actually really like all the new hairstyle models. They’re really cool. I just hoped to be able use the hair color for it. :]

Surely it wouldn’t be difficult to re-skin some of the hair styles to make them use less of the skin colour and make them a separate hair, similar to how the skin texture can be leafy or barky but it still uses the same model? Then everyone is happy?

So maybe a seperate version of the flower bud hair that uses the same model but has a different texture over it that doesn’t use so much skin tone? This could be done to some of the other styles as well?

I personally think it’s good it uses the skintone for the front leaves… it can make the flower “pop” a lot more. I do find that certain skin tones look a bit more “odd” with it, though. For example, a nice green shade for the skin tone would look great with just about any flower color. More exotic violets and blues probably look great, along with browns, too. You could even inverse that with having the flower be green and the skin/leaves be pink/blue/purple/etc. I also really like that the edge of the leaves matches the petals. However, I do find the “gray” skin tone, and perhaps even more “white” type skin tones to look more “odd” with the front leaves. Basically, I think it doesn’t work as well with the more “neutral” and/or “human-esque” skin tones. however, the fern and pinecone seem to work with just about anything. But I think it says something about the uniqueness of the style. The branches style uses the skin tone for them, also right? I think the branches would look odd if they didn’t… And those have a bit of a preference for a more brownish type skin color, going for a more bark-type look.

I think the flower style is fantastic. If I had a permanent hair style kit, I’d alter between it and my current hair on my Sylvari Mesmer. As it is, I’m keeping my hairstyle. I’d rather use my makeover kit on my other Sylvari.

This is what makes me sad about one of the new hairs and I don’t think there’s even a way to avoid it Apart from not using a shield.
