Race doesn’t really change much. The only Sylvari specific thing I can recommend early is when you’re creating a character toggle the lights (lightbulb icon) because Sylvari bio-luminesce and you don’t want to be stuck with a wacky glow color.

Yeah, this game isn’t like others where elves have dex and magic, and orcs have str and con. Every race is the same stat wise and profession wise. Of course, if you want to RP, some of the choices are obvious. Charr are melee and engineer, Asura are casters, Sylvari are Rangers, Humans are anything. And Norn are wastes of space.

I just started as a Sylvari ranger, and plan on making a mesmer too. They just seem to fit the best with the race. I’m still have no idea on how the Pale Tree manages to be so confusing. I find my way around Black Citadel easier. And Charr have a whole legion devoted to sneaky ops too. And toggle the lights too, I ended up glowing a weird color that didn’t work at all, so I restarted. Lucky I hadn’t done anything, not even finished the tutorial.

I love all things Charr. They’re badkitten!

In terms of roleplay, I think Norn are better suited as Rangers than Sylvari.. Do plants really have the urge to hunt wild animals? It’s not like they need the meat xD

I have a Sylvari elementalist and I think the caster role suits that race very well.

two words: “Wyld hunt” . most medium armor wardens also tend to be rangers.

Animals are made out of meat, which my sylvari thinks is delicious. Bacon is why he was brought forth from The Dream and lack of appreciation of bacon is why the Nightmare Court must be destroyed at all costs.

Rangers tame wild animals. That fits. My Sylvari likes bacon, but not as much as my charr.

Sylvari Guardians can look pretty cool — you can often blend armor colors with your bark/pattern colors so it looks like the armor is something you’ve grown.

Sylvari aren’t some sort of forest elves. They do not fall into the Ranger trope. “Wyld Hunt” is a folklore reference. In fact, since Sylvari are all about being noble, helpful and protective, their most ‘logical’ (or cliche, if you so wish) choice would be Guardian.

Norn are the stereotypical Rangers.

I know that, but hey, I wanted a Sylvan hound. Only way I know of right now is to make Sylvari ranger and pick Fern Wolf in bio. And I didn’t want to be a Norn. For RP purposes, Charr are anything that fits with their legion, Humans and Sylvari can do whatever, though Sylvari Mesmers are very popular, Norn are Rangers, Warriors and Guardians, with some magic users thrown in. Almost no Engineers or Thieves. Asura are obvious spellcasters, with Thieves, Engineers and Guardians next. Almost no Rangers or Warriors, though more Warriors than Rangers.

Trahearne is a necro…. and so is my main Sylvari. But, I got to like the Sylvari most of all the races, so leveled three in the three different factions:
Necro – Priory
Guardian – Vigil
Engineer – Whispers

Ranger or thief might have been a better choice for the Whispers/Sylvari, but the engineer is so much fun I don’t care.

I personally think sylvari can be anything and it still make sense from an RP perspective, don’t forget, their curiosity and naivety means they’ll try anything at least once :P

engineers can be sylvari who dreamed about the black citadel and are interested in how the charr make machines

necros are interested in death, since no sylvari has yet died of natural causes

elementalists want to learn more about nature and do so through the elements

rangers are the same as elementalists, but learn through studying nature itself

guardians and warriors are learning about new styles of fighting (there is even a warrior in brisban that says as much, he wanders the world and learns from it)

mesmers I can only imagine saw another race’s mesmers and thought it was cool, so they want to learn how it’s done

thieves I have no real justification for either, unless you compare thieves to how a child will steal something they’re interested in because it’s JUST SO INTERESTING THEY NEED IT NOW.

engineer fits whispers pretty well, they have Whispers Creators after all who make all the spy gadgets :P

Just responding to the people implying that the ‘typical’ Sylvari profession would be Ranger.

(I have a Sylvari Ranger myself. I liked Ranger gameplay during the Beta, and I wanted to start with a Sylvari, so it happened.)

I noticed that Sylvari Mesmer are popular too. I guess people like combining flashy plants with flashy butterflies

Actually, a ranger from any race can train a juvenile Fern Hound for a pet. According to the GW2 Wiki, they can be found in the following locations:

Maguuma Jungle
The Grove
Upper Commons
Scholar’s Terrace
Reckoner’s Terrace
Caledon Forest
Trader’s Green (Slightly northeast of the Town of Cathal Waypoint)
Brisban Wildlands
Zinder Slope (Slightly north of the Watchful Source Waypoint)
Sparkfly Fen
Darkweather Rise (Around the Brackwater Waypoint village)
Thundertroll Swamp (At Dryground Waypoint)

Steamspur Mountains
Mount Maelstrom
Bard’s Valley (Nearby the campsite)
Ashen Waste (At the Gorlois Spine point of interest)

Ruins of Orr
Straits of Devastation
Lightfoot Passage

I’d say Ranger seems like a common profession for Sylvari NPCs, so there is that. I’ve seen a couple of Warrior NPCs too, so that also seems fitting. Sylvari seem pretty in tune with nature as a whole so Ranger (with taming animals) and Elementalist all seem appropriate. But they seem like the least obvious of all races re: which class fits.

Humans could be anything, depends a lot on backstory too. A human raised on the streets would be most fitting as a thief, for instance, while a noble may be a more… “dignified” class, so to speak.

Charr are easiest: Warrior (Blood Legion), Engineer (Iron Legion) or Thief (Ash Legion). When picking a sparring partner, Dinky’s description says he’s picked on for being a Guardian, so that class would be unlikely to be glorified. Elementalists are probably a little too close to the Flame Legion, too.

Norn are all about glory and booze but also animals, so Warrior and Ranger seem to be the most fitting. Most Norn we encounter out there are warriors, too.

Asura actually seem to fit Engineer the most, since they like to build and tinker with things.

Ultimately though you can roleplay as any class you want, since if you’re roleplaying you probably have a background for your character anyway and so you can make whatever excuse you want for their class. :p

Flashy, shiny things look pretty. Sylvari look pretty. Butterflies look pretty. Butterfly on Slyvari look sooooo pretty.

Charr can actually do many different things, as legions can have different uses for different classes. An engineer in Ash can make spy gear, a elementalist in Iron can use fire to weld, and a ranger in Blood can be on the front lines as a beastmaster. There is a thread on the charr forum called ‘Choosing your Legion’ which has great answers about which class can go where. And the Asuran forums are up at arms about how different engineer tech and Asuran tech are so different. Asura are all the casters. And Asuran necros look terrifying, and since I have one, I should know. Sylvari are curious, and will do whatever, if they are able to do it.

I love all things Charr. They’re badkitten!

there are also class specific skills you must look at, see what suits ur play style and character profession (not that important). Apart from that i tend to look at cultural armours (adventurers have sexiest T3 imo), bio luminescence, normal armours/weapons etc.

from all the above i selected my ranger and i am very happy with her ^^ hope that helped, cheers ^.^

Animals are made out of meat, which my sylvari thinks is delicious. Bacon is why he was brought forth from The Dream and lack of appreciation of bacon is why the Nightmare Court must be destroyed at all costs.

Ranger is certainly fitting. Personally, however, I prefer Elementalist (and Mesmer) for Sylvari. They also seem very fitting to me, as Sylvari tend to be more magic-oriented.

Also the types of magic seem to fit well with the race too. Elementalist tends to be more about the four elements, all of which are necessary for forests and nature to thrive. And Mesmer, being all about illusion and imagery, seems fitting as well since Sylvari first start their journey within a shared dream experience.
