OMG - The Sylvari
Updated every Monday
They’re my race of choice too. I don’t have a main and alts. Just 4 sylvari girls of 4 different professions that I’m leveling up together. I love the sylvari!
I’m too old and bitter to enjoy Sylvari. They’re all like, what? 25 year-old newborns? So full of life and hope and all that other useless stuff.

Yeah, it’s funny what Americans consider a “British” accent, especially since I can think of a dozen different British accents off the top of my head.

Well….there is considered to be an American accent and I can think of many different American accents too. British people do American badly. :P
I also love the Sylvari. I made a mesmer that I deleted at 40 (class wasn’t for me). So I made another Sylvari, a thief this time. I am enjoying the Sylvari areas as much as I did the first time through.

They’re newborns but they’re pretty mature.
I like them because they give me more colour options and their home city is gorgeous. I wish I had reason to go there more.
But the hairstyles look like anime characters. It was tough finding one I didn’t hate. There could definitely be more added.
Isn’t it just the standard posh british accent that everyone adopts for americans when they come over here?
Eh, it’s a fantasy game, some liberty with accents should be allowed. I’m one of the few Americans that can tell a British accent from an Australian one, much less discern social status, and even I never thought that hard about how the Sylvari sound. I can see how it would be jarring for a UK resident, though. Much like a Southern American accent done by a European actor sounds ‘off’ to me.

Just be glad its not a Bronx or Boston accent
It didn’t really come off to me as a British accent, either. Just the generic fantasy accent used by most actors in movies, tv, etc. I think it just has to sound different from everyday speech.
they’re ugly. Hard to get past that.
If it’s supposed to be a British accent, the Sylvari scout NPC in the Kessex Hills pronounced ‘Quay’ wrong. It’s /key/, not /kway/.
If Webster had an issue with that when he invented American English, he should have changed the spelling instead of the pronunciation so that it was consistent with the Spanish-origin places like Key West.
So anyway, it’s not a British accent, it’s a Sylvari accent. Besides, a British accent is unsuitable for a species that’s so cheerful and spry. It’s more suitable for a species that likes to complain about the weather and gets spiteful when other species compliment them on their accents.
That Sylvari cheerfulness just really annoys me. It’s like they don’t even know or care about Ascended gear. They make out as though they are enjoying life instead of just grinding life to get a new and higher tier of life later. What’s up with that?

Made me laugh.

Omg, Asura w/British accents.
Do it now!
I’m thinking the syvari accent is an american voice actor trying to do a psudo british one…. and Asura should have been done with aussie accent, now that would have been funny!
For some reason i just can’t stand the sylvari and ive tried playing one of em but deleted it very quickly. they should be dumped with the rest of the cabage patch kids
British people do American badly. :P
Hugh laurie (House), Andrew Lincoln (Walking dead), Christian Bale (Batman/American Pyscho), Andrew Garfield (Spiderman) and Henry Caville (Superman).

By way of counterpoint, I offer you every American character ever depicted on Doctor Who or Torchwood, except those played by actual Americans.
they’re ugly. Hard to get past that.
Some of them look like they are wrapped in bacon strips, not plant leaves.

I’m sorry… I’m not seeing the problem here.

Everyone loves bacon. I’m not seeing the problem, either.
Sylvari should not be rangers. They should be warriors. They should not thieves. They should be tossed in a bowl with ranch dressing and toppings.
They are the first MMO creature/race to creep me out so much I couldn’t stand to look at them. I was trying to make one and made the mistake of clicking off their armor at character creation. It was horrifying. 0_o
I think they’re beautiful!
IMO the humans and norn look so boring next to sylvari. The charr and asura are also infinitely more interesting to look at than plain ol’ people, though their looks aren’t to my tastes. Flower Power!
It doesn’t make sense to me that all the races speak the same language. It really doesn’t make sense to me that the only race with a different accent from the others is the one that hasn’t been around long enough for linguistic drift. But… of all things, this isn’t a big deal.
I think many Sylvarian females are beautiful. But it’s frustrating that there’s only one or two faces and hair that anyone chooses for either sex (is sex/gender the relevant distinction?). It’s interesting to me that there seems only to be same-sex partnering in the story quests. Then again ArenaNet is in Bellevue…
Not ONLY same sex partnerings. There was the whole Bercilak story. I haven’t gotten too far in the game, so that’s the only one that co to mind…
I kind of get the sense though that gender doesn’t really matter to sylvari, since they don’t make babies the way other races do. Male/female distinctions seem to be purely aesthetic, from a lore standpoint.

There’s another notable pairing you’ll find as you go thru your story quests, actually regardless of race, shortly after Claw Island. I’ll not spoiler it here.

Yes! I think that is my problem with the Sylvari too.
They are so optimistic and nice I just want to hit the nearest one with a plank- I tried making one in BWE3 but I deleted it so fast she didn’t even hit lvl4.
Originally I thought of making a Sylvari main, since I like their lore.
The reality put me off- no thanks.
Sylvari are indeed great….roasted, fried, boiled, sauteed, grilled, in a soup, with a nice steak. Indeed, nothing beats a sylvari as a side dish. My cookbook is extensive.
I love my Sylvari and knew I was going to main one when I saw them at first glance.
But I won’t lie, I hated the male voices…
They are like gremlins. You should not feed them after midnight.

Just for shiggles, mute the audio and read all the subtitles in the regional accent of your choice.
The Pale Tree is so much better as a brummie.

I have more sylvari than other races. I love the sterotypical British accent. And I love their culture and personality. They’re also far more customizable than any of the other races. I wish my humans could have anime blue hair.
I wonder if Arenanet could actually tell me if British VAs voiced the Sylvari. I am genuinely very interested.
Cheers.

Well….
Sylvari Female = Leah from D3 = Lady Commander Shepard
… So what nationalities are Leah and Shepard?

Well, Jennifer Hale is American (born Canadian), so I guess that answers it.
EDIT: I found this too: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Voice_actor

I was amazed at how closely they managed to capture the accents of English speaking plants. It’s quite eerie.
YES!!! ^ +5 for you!!

I thought that the difference between the English and Australian accent was as obvious as the difference between Stone Henge and a curry.

Do the plants in Britain sound more like Sylvari or Australians?
Geckos. Plants in Britain sound like geckos.
I’m made of wood. Nice to meet you.
I was expecting Celtic accent personally
I was expecting Sylvari to talk like uneducated medieval Irishmen, not posh romanticized British chaps. I don’t really understand why they got the generic elf voice, I thought Ree Soesbee was trying to emphasize that Sylvari are NOT elves. Other than the voices and animations I like everything about the Sylvari. It’s really lame being the only race with all but 2 of our animations ripped from Humans.

Me too
I didn’t think of the Sylari as having a British accent, though I really only play male Sylvari
Yours sincerely
An American
I love the female Voice actor’s portrayal. I have a Thief in all five races, and during the “Down the Hatch” personal story quest, the Sylvari is the only one that actually sounds “Sloshed!” So very cool!
I think they are my favorite race in concept. However, I couldn’t stand the phony British accent. Of course, it wasn’t until I had already leveled my Human Elementalist main to level 80 that someone pointed out to me that you can change the spoken language from English to French (while still keeping all the text in English). And it’s not like you’re missing anything because, let’s face it, who hasn’t already gotten sick of hearing your character constantly yell things just because you switched attunements, or gained might/fury, etc…
P.S. I just looked it up, and the voice actress for the female Sylvari (player characters) is Jennifer Hale, an American actress [so, obviously not British]. She also did the voice for the Female Trooper in Star Wars: The Old Republic, which I also hated. I mean… it sounded fitting for a trooper, but it was just way too butch for me. And she did the voice acting for Leah from Diablo III (which was a surprise to me — I actually liked her work in that game).
