I have been wondering about the fern mastiff for some time now, the skill itself talks about summoning a fern mastiff but in reality we get a thorn wolf (both model, skin and name of the creature that spawns). Though I love the thorn wolf and it’s very Sylvari it’s a “simple” creature that any ranger can have and wherever sylvari can be found so can they. I love the hounds of Balthazor and that they have a unique skin (I think) which makes it a really cool skill for Humans.
I wish our Fern Mastiffs had a unique appearance too, they are after all an elite skill. Is the Thorn Wolf a placeholder or is that the way it’s suppose to be? (Atleast don’t call them Thorn wolves when it says: summon Fern Mastiff.) The same could be said for the Summon Druid Spirit, and I’ve yet to see the term “druid” being discussed in game lore.

What are your opinions and thoughts?

I’ve always been confused about these things anyways. Are they Sylvan Hounds? Fern Mastiffs? Thorn Wolves? Fern Hounds? They’re all the same things, but still have so kitten many different names.

I was a bit bemused when I first summoned it on my elementalist to find it was a fern hound. I’m guessing because they have so many names as it is that it’s not a placeholder, but I’d still like it to be renamed. You can stretch hound but mastiff is most certainly not so wolf like.

Wow, I just checked the wiki and there sure are a lot of different names for them. But come on, giving us the same dog as an elite when Rangers can run around with them from the get go. Asuras get golems! Frickin’ golem!

i just don’t like that it doesn’t really do anything. it goes in and dies in 2 seconds
