If Sylvari are “plant like” with their skin being leaves and thier bones, hard wood..how come they breath and dont photosynthesis?

Sylvari do photosynthesize to an extent, but not enough to keep them alive solely through that. They have to eat too.

The breathing is probably for much the same reason we do, but with some kind of internal plantlike structure rather than lungs.

Remember, plants can “breathe”, but not in the same literal sense that we do. They don’t possess animal lung organs, but there are holes on leaves that draw air in and out.

The more correct term would be: Sylvari are “human like”. They are plants trying to be human, but obvious are not that completely. And never will be.

They do have a digestive system of some sort (remember that some plants DO eat meat. ex: pitcher plants and venus fly traps) and Sylvari do eat much of the same foods humans eat (Killeen in the Ghosts of Ascalon book was eating chicken at one point).

They also shed pollen while they walk. I dunno, but that intrigues me a lot. xD

I’d really like to see an in-depth breakdown of their innards from Anet. I think it would be highly fascinating.

They breath because there is no way photosynthesis could produce enough energy to allow sylvari to move, let alone think and talk. Plants can use photosynthesis because they are stationary, but once they start walking around, they’re going to need a whole lot more energy.

Because magic.

These are sentient plants magically spawned by a tree somehow and they’re already the size of a full grown person and already know English perfectly and exactly how to do everything, and they share a hivemind Dream.

Also, you’re in a world where some people can summon undead and throw fireballs/bolts of lightning. Because kittening magic.

I would, however, enjoy seeing how Anette says Sylvari work.

That’s like saying you were born already the size of a baby.

Not English, not everything and not hivemind (yes I am nitpicker).

So?

The Sylvari use a lot of different kinds of plant systems to make them a living entity, All plants breath most take in carbon-dioxide and exhale oxygen and many plants do eat animals like the Venus flytrap and pitcher plant. The Venus fly trap also moves to hold prey within its “mouth” along with using photosynthesis to generate its energy. I would also like to see the inner workings of the Sylvari, but keep the Asura away! :O

It says somewhere in game that they loosely model themselves after humans, so I imagine that’s where it comes from. I am a nerd and love coming up with the different ways that this might play out in individual Syl.

It’s stated that the pale tree was planted on top of Ronans family grave site. This can be taken as a notion that the pale tree based Sylvari off of the bodies found underneath it (Also explaining why the tree produces dogs, which would have been buried too)

Well being a more evolved plant they can probably pick and choose how they sustain themselves by need, much the way humans do compared to our more primitive relatives. Keep in mind some plants on earth stay alive in very unique ways. Sylvari remind me most of Delvians in their appearance and even culture in a way.

Just so everyone understands, photosynthesis does not directly provide energy for cells. All that it provides is a food source for plants to convert into energy through, you guessed it, cellular respiration. For me, I think that lungs would be necessary for a mobile plant such as the Sylvari. Much more oxygen would have to be taken in to support all the physical functions that the Sylvari perform. That being said, I believe they also need mouths and a digestive system similar to humans as well. I imagine they would have died out long ago if they could only use photosynthesis as a food source.
