Sylvari and Halloween
Well the thing is, if you gather mats, sylvari can chop down trees for lumber. So if you have no qualms doing that, then carving pumpkins would be the same them.
If you believe that they can feel the pain of other plants, then they wouldn’t gather lumber plus they probably would be disgusted with halloween pumpkin carving. But they probably would suffer from emotion overload from plants being eaten by omnivore beings in general. Cooking and such. If that was the case, they would of done something about it in the past 25 years they have been alive.
However i take the view that they probably take the see plants and pumpkins the same way humans see livestock and animals.
How would a plant feel pain? Pumpkins are like any other fruit. Their purpose is to die and be eaten so as to spread the plant’s seeds as much as possible. Beings that are half plant or whatever would understand this pretty well.
The Sylvari are not that much more connected to plants than a human is to a mouse. They are omnivores after all. I mean… come on, they have a farm right outside the grove. And harvest fruit barely ten paces from the farm.
Besides, the pumpkin is already dead after being removed from the plant. Its purpose is to rot and feed the seeds, so carving it up doesn’t matter.
I think the better question is why does a catholic holiday exist in this game in the first place.

For fun?
They could have made festivals that actually make sense though… sylvari day or something.
Or no-pants day, thats my favorite holiday

LOL! You think Halloween is catholic…
@OP so, I gather lumber without going into overload, and gather and kittenerbs etc etc so I’m going to assume they just see it like most humans see eating other animals and the such.
PS: I know this is off topic, but who else saw the sylvari trick or treating in Lions Arch with the little kids?

But Halloween is a HUGE event in Tyria ever since GW1… Not having it would’ve been a sin!
That being said I’m hoping sylvari bring in a holiday of their own =D!!

There’s a Trick-or-Treating Sylvari?
Tell me you’ve got a screenshot, I haven’t seen that at all.

You think Sylvari sit around and ponder if humans are offended by Thanksgiving? They’re both meat….

I’ll get on tonight and find him again, he was roaming around one of the lesser populated areas of LA (IE not near the fountain or market place) i shall find him though!! I remember dying from laughter when i saw him!

Definitely omnivorous. There’s a line in one of the inns at The Grove about how delicious the rabbit stew is.
Halloween isn’t really a Catholic holiday. Most people accept that it’s a “borrowed” and modified version of Samhain, done to help usher along the conversion of Celtic cultures to Christianity.
Also, I seriously doubt that Sylvari feel any (or very little) empathy towards consumed plants and probably partake of plant matter themselves.
Most people don’t think twice about eating a steak or a pork chop, both of which also come from mammals. Why would Sylvari be any different?

I think Sylvari would appreciate the seasonal aspects of Halloween, and join in with the Krytan /Mad King aspects just for fun. I hope the Sylvari get their own holiday though, maybe in the spring?
There could be a rotational holiday schedule, one for each race. Humans have Halloween, Norns have Wintersday/Xmas, Sylvari do a growth/renewal celebration in the spring, and Charr do something involving heat (fire, explosions?) in the summer. Or whatever. I just really want to see each race having its own special events, with historical ties, etc.
I’ve been looking all over for that trick or treating sylvari! He’s hard to find.
