“All things have a right to grow; the blossom is the brother to the weed” – Everyone deserves a chance for a good future. Everyone on earth has the right to go to school like anyone else, get a job like anyone else, and do anything life anyone else. No matter what race/religion/beliefs/whatever.

“The branch that doesn’t bend will break” – If you’re not flexible in life it will come back to bite you in the butt. You should be prepared and accepting of all changes.

“Hard ground makes stronger roots” – Life getting hard is just an opportunity for you to make yourself stronger and prepare yourself for the next difficult task ahead.

The full set from Ventari’s tablet:

I. Live life well and fully, and waste nothing.
II. Do not fear difficulty. Hard ground makes stronger roots.
III. The only lasting peace is the peace within your own soul.
IV. All things have a right to grow. The blossom is brother to the weed.
V. Never leave a wrong to ripen into evil or sorrow.
VI. Act with wisdom, but act.
VII. From the smallest blade of grass to the largest mountain, where life goes—so, too, should you.

Many of them resemble the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius. Players have speculated that eastern philosophy (such as Confucianism and Buddhism) was a source for Ventari’s tablet.

Like Confucianism the teachings of Ventari seem more concerned with matters of ethics and morality than spirituality, and the Sylvari are more concerned with living life, and less concerned with concepts like an afterlife. Along with Charr, they are one of the major Tyrian races that could be said to lack a true religion.

It is also interesting to compare these values, which are more like suggestions and guidelines to the more prescriptive rules of Western regions.

I disagree with your interpretation of Ventari’s saying. To me, “all things have a right to grow” speaks to the importance of diversity and the possibility of there being many different cultural ways of being.

In the Sylvari character creation: “Diversity of opinion is good. Discussion is healthy. No one should be condemned simply for being different. I will stand up for the rights of all.”

Schooling, employment, and other modern “rights” are more about standardization than diversity in my opinion. Sure everyone has the right to go to school, but you’ll only succeed in school if you think, write, and act a certain way.

i dont know about that, when i was in school, i thought, wrote, and acted rather different, and honestly i did better than the majority of my school, made it to honor roll (nothing special) but still, i wasnt even getting CLOSE to failing classes, or “barely passing” as most people like to do nowadays, and i never even studied ._. unless you count homework at studying

but then again that’s just an isolated circumstance, and more than likely completely irrelevant to the “average” people

even wrote an entire essay (if you can call a few sentences per paragraph, and like 4 paragraphs an essay) in icelandic (our current subjects involved that area and stuff) just cuz i thought it would be more fun and relative, teacher was sort of overjoyed at it
