I mean, we come from pods that belong on a tree, does this mean we are seeds?

If we are seeds, could we theoretically become another pale tree?

If we are seeds and could become another pale tree, what would happen to the other races as we continue to populate? A single tree produced hundreds to thousands of sylvari within 20 years, a human might be able to push out 26 babies or so over that time, with almost no pregnancy downtime, they can’t compete.

Also, if we are seeds, having a sentient seed that is strong enough to defend itself seems like a pretty nifty reproductive device for a tree.

I think we’re more…byproducts. Or, perhaps hatchlings would be a better term.

Sylvari are more like fruit. And if you know anything about plants, not every fruit contains a seed. We just happen to be sentient, mobile fruits.

However, Sylvari do apparently have some kind of ‘seed’ within them that can be planted and turned into a tree- but that tree doesn’t grow other Sylvari. It’s just a tree. That can also talk.

now I’m curious, what fruits don’t contain seeds? I am counting the stone of stone fruits to be seeds

A lot of them these days are manmade, but different varieties of bunches of other fruits are seedless.

Perhaps a way to think of it is bees? A single Queen/pale tree can produce thousands of off spring that are workers but perhaps only a few future queens

That not 100% true, a bee queen could make nothing but bee queens. If it wanted to, but it does not.

Before it die’s it will make one to replace it, basically it can control what it young will be. Because it can control what gender it be through special hormones.

Having just read the Sylvari homosexuality thread before this, I couldn’t help snickering.

When I think of Sylvari, I think of cabbage – not the florid dark green kind, but the pale green, tightly-wrapped kind. So whatever cabbage is technically as part of the plant it is (leaves, bud?), I reckon they’re a development of that.

I think sylvari are a salads waiting to be diced up and smotherd in dressing….

No, but some kind on sentient fungi maybe. An only explainable by magic defense mechanism some how brought forth by the pale tree, perhapes the pale tree is the only means of resurection and we where all once other races.

Well, I have wondered about this a lot.

The hairstyles for Sylvari show a huge mix of plant types, plants that are native to very different climates.

My take on it is that the tree does not create Sylvari. Seeds from certain species of plants are simply able to take nutrients from the tree’s power. Technically you could put any type of nut or seed at its base and, with my theory, it would grow.

But, not all plants can become Sylvari. You see many amazing types of flowers in The Grove, but there are no flowering Sylvari. I therefore doubt that the success rate is 100%, that is, not all plants can benefit from the Pale Tree’s properties.

I am no horticulturist, but I would be interested if someone in the know could list the different species of plant represented within the character designer’s hair options.

Sylvari come from a very particular pod. “A golden pod.” They’re not a trail mix of plant life. They’re grown by The Pale Tree specifically. They have very specific dreams and awaken knowing their own names. I wouldn’t read too much into the artistic choices a player is given as evidence to their biology.
