What made you want to play a Sylvari?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I like everything about the sylvari… their look, customization options, voice/accents, lore and philosophy, The Grove. I like everything, that is, except their dance. That has got to go. I hope ANet one day makes new dances available, even if it’s just for purchase.
I was making a ranger, and thought Sylvari would work well. Plus, i thought of humans as too generic, Charr are… Meh, Norn are too tall, and Asura are too short.
I thought to myself. You know, I never played a plant and they glow how awesome is that and the variety of colors and they can glow in the dark. Just was too hard to pass up. Oh and their hair! When I saw that branch like hair it was epic had to have it. And it has been worth it ever since.
I liked the look of them and their personality is great. I love my mesmer and wouldn’t trade him for anything but I’m not sure if I’d create another Sylvari. I was a bit annoyed at some of the story and was much happier with things once I got into the Priory. The grove unfortunately doesn’t have anything on Divinity’s Reach even if it is well designed and fits with the theme perfectly, I tend to not go back there unless I have to.
I must just be picky.
sylvari necromancer…. i like that in death i can ressurect my enemies but if i die they cant… plus necromancers rule.
I was the last dragon, and I wanted the power of the glow.
When soemone ask, who yo daddy.. you say Shooooo Nuff!

why play an ugly human when you could have a nice sylvari?
Because they have the most customization options. I’m usually drawn to human types. I made a human and tried to make a norn a few times (and hated their culture). For fun I was playing with the character creation screen on some other races and tried sylvari. They can be a wide variety of colors, and you have a ton of options for unique hairstyles and faces. Once I got in game I loved their culture and the uniqueness of their race. I also have a thing for British accents. Right now I’m 3/3 on human and sylvari characters.
Female OOC running animation and overall shape of their bodies.

Yo, Leroy! Bruce, Leroy!
I played with creating one when I started but just couldn’t find myself liking their general aesthetics, most of their hair and face options are just plain ugly, and after a couple minutes of experimentation I gave up on them. I eventually went back and created one because I was revived by a sylvari who had one of the coolest looking faces I had ever seen. When I found the barklike face and combined it with the spike hairstyle I was instantly sold. My sylvari is probably the most kitten looking character I have, narrowly beating out my two charr, and the only problem I have with him is that the male sylvari voice feels so blatantly out of place that it feel like someone in the background is talking in all the cutscenes.
Because comparatively, there seems to be very small amount of Sylvari players on my server.
Humans are dime a dozen because they’re “pretty”. Norns are decently common because of their cool factor, and Charrs are quite abundant for the very same reason. Even Asura has size advantage in PvP, so people do play them.
Sylvari? Well..I guess you could say that they’re weak in every aspect. Hence, no one like them. Plus, even the Dev once gave an interview that there are very few Sylvaris (and Norns) around. So I figured..what the hell, better give this a try.
Also, I can have a mushroom head. There’s no other way to crack jokes about having people lick my forehead for narcotic effects in this game.
I wanted to play a Sylvari for one reason and one reason only. I wanted to play a race that can be so psychologically different then any other race in the game. They seem naive but they have fresh opinions and are quite astute, even if some of their ideas are ludicrous – due to a much less internally socially pressured society.
Which can lead to just as many creepy connotations as they have brilliant ones.

I love the innocent yet logical attitude the Sylvari have towards life. I love playing a character that feels strongly connected to their roots—all being part of one Dream. They are extremely humble and being so young they don’t take established social etiquettes for granted. Most importantly, their love for one another extends beyond binary gender roles.
I am proud to be Sylvari.
Whiteside Ridge (EU)
too many humans not enough sylvari!
The Grasping Vine racial skill was my reason for choosing the Sylvari race. This was the one crowd control skill the elementalist class did not possess that I thought was essential for a ranged, light armor wearing, casting class. Too bad its 1/4 second activation make it useless against moving targets. Might have picked it anyway for the artwork which I think is just great.
Because I wanted to make a bald, green, pointy eared fighter who can make multi-copies of himself and is named Piccolo….done and done.
“Even with the energy you took from me, my power is still far greater than your own. "
Female out-of-combat run and voice acting.
Started rolling characters yesterday without any preoccupation (didn’t really know anything about the races before installing), so I went by elimination:
- Humans? Meh.
- Charr, wolvish brutes? Not really my style.
- Norn, big nordic type humans. Meh.
- Asura, small tinkerers, gnome-style small races aren’t usually my cup of tea but rolled one anyway. Bit too arrogant to my tastes, so back to character creation.
So yes, ended up with a Sylvari and loving her. Seems like a mix of tree-shaped elves with some of EverQuest 2-style Fae lore mixed in. I loved my Fae Warden. They miss the ancient arrogant wiser-and-older-than-thou style made popular by Tolkien which is a welcome change.
Thief seemed like a good fit for the race. I sort of went for the pixie style naughtiness coupled with playful innocence theme.
I’ll probably end up trying the other races as well, eventually. Maybe.
At first it was a joke. One of my guildies from SWTOR was playing and kept trying to convince me to play as well. When I finally caved, I didn’t tell him. I play a Mirialan Guardian (so green) named Kambria on SWTOR so I created a Sylvari (green) guardian named Kyrasae and whispered him. Symmetry. :P
Also, I just love the wide-eyed innocence of the Sylvari. I found out later about Jennifer Hale doing the VA and somehow I just keep running into her….

I’ve always enjoyed nature, I find it incredibly beautiful in the real world and especially in MMO’s. So, usually, I much prefer to play in places that are forested, with exotic plants and animals roaming about. But I made a sylvari and stuck with them because I love their designs, their faces, the colors, the glows, the hairstyles, and they fascinate me with how young they are compared to all the other races.
Plus, I love the starting zone and The Grove is so beautiful.
I’m also trying to branch a little into the RP spectrum, and going with a race that doesn’t necessarily have books upon books of culture or history and where the individuals can be still new to Tyria as young adults — not knowing every bit of lore out there — is actually a nice template for me. Plus their curiosity, and some of the lines they say (NPC’s) and some of the insults they receive make me giggle inside.
I always liked tree people in games, Elves, Sylvari or whatever I like their thoughts and respect towards everything.
The whole lore behind the Sylvari really interests me. I love how they are new to the world, oldest is only 25 years of age, and they are not born like a normal human. I have not really seen something like that before, also they look much different from other races I have played in an mmorpg & rpg.
The story missions seem a bit more interesting to me as well. Even though I like the Human & Norn race, the story missions just don’t really interest me.
Big plus for me is that I am a fan of the voice actresses for both the Female Sylvari & Caithe. So I really enjoy listening to them when they talk.
Looking forward to leveling my Sylvari Ranger. I have a Human & Norn character but they are going to be put on hold. I really wish I tried the Sylvari as my race when I started, as well as the Ranger class. I would have been max level by now. lol
The reason I chose sylvari is simply because they are the most unique and interesting race I’ve see in any MMORPG to date. From their bioluminescence to their armor designs to their crazy hair do’s and extravagant body markings, they grabbed my interest right from the beginning.
I hate the Asura, don’t really like the Charr, and Humans are two generic for me. I thought the Sylvari were pretty cool looking, and really enjoyed their backstory, so I chose them over the Norn. Sylvari are a pretty good mix of cool and unique. Their strangeness doesn’t seemed forced to me, so I can get into the story instead of laughing at it.
As a ranger, you are really close to Earth. As a Sylvari, you actually get to play kind of Earth. (If that made any sense), and it just felt that it would give my character a better backstory. I’m not too sure why I set on Sylvari from the moment I saw them, other than they are awesome. =D
Paige Starpetal – Human Elementalist
’Cause playing as a sentient plant warrior really appealed to me. I was sold in the character creator when I gave him that face that looks like wood is growing over him. It made him look more armored to me, and I thought that was stupid cool.
That, and the glowing. Love the glowing.
The skin glow. Looks amazing on my necro
Because plants are awesome. And nature is awesome. And they are, in many ways, better than humans (or more accurately; more like how humans should be). They seem to generally be more kind, caring, compassionate, genuine, honest, trusting, friendly, and helpful. And they also seem to lack many human flaws, i.e. greed, hatred, jealousy, etc… Of course, I’m talking about the Sylvari that follow The Tablet and Ventari’s Teachings, not those corrupt Nightmare Court ones.
Because I love the idea of plant people. Sylvari are unique and interesting. They are quite original in a genre that usually relies on tropes so they feel very refreshing to me. Their art design is very pretty. I love listening to their voices. They are just awesome all around. Haha. And I’m loving my Sylvari Necromncer. XD
Also, they glow.

I wanted to be a magic mushroom and say ‘bite me’
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Probably their unique look and backstory made me pick them. Later on when I learned more about their lore I decided to stay with them (with a norn between my first sylvari and now my main sylvari). They’re just SO awesome! Definitely my favourite race along with the norn.
I love dryad and plant-like creatures. The Sylvari are part of what drew me to play the game
Various things drew me to the Sylvari: Their connection to nature, the concept of the Dream, the Ventari philosophy, the racial elites, representation of gay love stories, their newness and naivety.
I wasn’t going to play a Sylvari at all until the last beta. I don’t know why but they just really stuck with me.
My main and most fully kitted out character is a Sylvari.
I see great potential in Sylvari naivety, just want to see how much I can warp that innocence in the game.
I am more suitable to play a Nightmare Courtier :p
1st, I wanted to experience all the racial storylines, so I had to take one.
2nd, I wanted to play a countercultural character, so it was going to be either necro or engineer, but engineer has a max turret cap which conflicts with the sylvari elite.
So I have a Sylvari Vigil Necro who dresses in the brightest and prettiest colors so people can tell for sure when she enters death shroud
I wanted to be a magic mushroom and say ‘bite me’
I too decided to play Sylvari to be a magic mushroom…that kills people.
Psychedelic!
I Beta Tested.
I thought of All the Races They were one of the more unique.
I have Played as an Elementalist and Will Try it again.
The Artwork is amazing and was My Main Interest until I played!
Also I am an Anime fan and they ‘reminded’ me of Origin.
If You have not seen it I recommend it.
Because Sylvari glows
Closest race to human size and shape that doesn’t look like one.
+1 for me.
I always intended to go for Sylvari since they were first announced; mostly because I’m a big fan of nature and nature themed race/characters ect. in games and literature for instance I’ve spent the better part of seven years as a Night Elf druid on WoW and have followed the Asrai of the Old World for even longer (Much love Orion, much love). What really drew me in was the stunning lore and visual work realised with the intial design and blog posts; I’m an especially big fan of Malyck and how he’s somewhat alien even to the other Sylvari.
Plus…who can hate those racials?
I have one of all races except Charr (tried it in beta, didn’t gel). I have to admit that when I tried Sylvari in Beta and choose “Shield of the Moon” and “Act With Wisdom” and a Sylvari thief, I didn’t much like the race. But I was committed to having one of each race (except Charr) and so rolled a Sylvari Ranger. With Ranger I choose “White Stag” and “All things have a right to grow”. I liked “White Stag” a lot, “All things have a right to grow” was a bit lackluster and I kind of wished I had choosen “Act With Wisdom”. But I really enjoyed being a Sylvari Ranger.
So when I took advantage of the Anet New Years sale to buy a character slot for the express purpose of rolling an elementalist, Sylvari was pretty much my natural choice. I choose “Green Huntsman” and “Where Life Goes” for my ele and to day, hand down, “Where Life Goes” is THE best Part II storyline for the personal story I have encountered! Malyck is great and I really hope to encounter him again!
Pretty much a dark looking race for my necro thats human like sort of… I love the style actually really cool features and armor alike
My reasoning is they are not born and just come into existence within the Dream and then learn about life there then appear under the Pale Tree, less than a year old and yet has the knowledge of an adult. :P The Dream is a fascinating backstory I wanted to delve into.
And cause they are made of plants.
I’m open to playing anything but a male human. (I find it boring to play what I am IRL.) I wanted to play one of every race. I like every races in this game so I want to play as each one.
As for sylvari, why not? The artists and writers seemed very enthusiastic about them and there was tons and tons and tons of blogs, interviews and Q&A about them. And -hey!- they glow at night, how is that not awesome?
My friend said you couldn’t make one look good. So I made one that looks human. Now it’s my main.
Seriously?
Most combos looks great ^^
Because asura was my main, human are too same barbies like in any game, norns are overgrow stupid looking humans and charr ..I can’t do JP well with them.
And it works well with a guardian game style / lore.
