To make clear what I’m talking about:
http://dulfy.net/2013/09/18/gw2-tequatl-boss-achievements-guide/
It’s the “Stay Dry, Stay Alive” achievement.
It’s not visible in the list thus called hidden, and doesn’t count towards the overall achievement, nor does it give any achievement Points.
What you need to do is jumping over the giant Tidal wave that happens when the battery events fail.

This so-called hidden achievement really needs to go.
I see people in overflows and servers that are seemingly not going to make it have certain people call out for this hidden achievement that only is achievable when you fail the event, and get the tidal wave.
Of course when certain people are OCDing on this, they call out to fail the battery events, which really shouldnt have any encouragement.

I know, it doesn’t give anything. But people are just trolling on certain server because they can’t get anything else seemingly. I have seen my server fail the events on purpose because of it. (I don’t get it either!)

Sadly due to this, people miss out on their Blue Draogn chest, which in some cases is already really something for some servers. And it just makes me sad to see all those people not get anything, just because 4-5 people confuse people with that silly achievement.

Never. Ever. Reward. For. Failure.

Not even a tiny ping or mention in the right hand of the screen.

I don’t understand why people want this achievement that doesn’t give anything, and I don’t want to understand. So just remove it all together, because it does more harm than good in this state.

Um, what achievement are you talking about that requires an event failure?

Stay Dry, Stay Alive is a hidden achievement. It doesn’t show up in the achievement panel and you don’t get any achievement points from it when you do get it. The only way you can get is is to fail the battery event and use the jump pads to jump over the huge insta-kill tidal wave using one of the jump pads.

I agree with the OP. There should not be any sort of reward (even one without achievement points) for outright failing the event. I also feel that achievements that require people to detach from the group and not work as a team (like “I Found It” and “Tail Flail”) are a bad idea for something that requires a high level of teamwork and coordination.

Totally, agree, but I really want to get this achieve now, lol. Next overflow server I am on that gets him barely past 75% with very little time left I am going to try to encourage everyone to do this haha.

The thing that annoys me is that I totally pulled this one off on the first day (mostly by accident), but didn’t get the achievement for it. I know that I jumped the tidal wave, since it happened and I didn’t die, but I got no achievement.

It’s not on the Wiki, but it is on Dulfy (first achievement on the list, screenshot from Dulfy’s site)…

I got it the first time our server encountered the tidal wave. Totally surprised me when I got it because I didn’t know it existed at the time!

Hmm that’s weird I used the jumpad to jump over the title wave (without knowing about this achievement) and didn’t get anything for doing it.

There have been other hidden achievements in the game that previously did not reward point but now do. The Ebon hawk ones for example. I did not even know about them until it because active. Had I not read this thread I would not have known about this one.

It’s possible that at some point it’s going to be worth points. I am not sure I like hidden achievements either though. I like to know what I am going for.

The problem isn’t hidden achievements, the problem is rewarding failure. People are going to want to fail the event just to get this, and yes, giving a shiny badge that does nothing other than being a shiny badge is a reward that people will go for.

+1 no rewards for fails.

Same for me. Was on north, we failed to defend the battery, tidal appeared, took the jump in the meanwhile, and no hidden success.

I fully agree with OP and about achievements which tend to have players doing something else than trying to beat Tequatl, like the “Tail Flail” one – nearly every try we have a group of players staying on the island on the back trying multiple times to get this not-so-automatic success, and thus doing no dps during that time).

Agree. Any achievement that requires failure or just pure luck should never exist. The hidden achievement is like the equivelant of that free SAT score for writing your name correctly.

Agree. Rewarding intended failure is not something I support.

If he had adds that were extremely hard to kill or other conditions that spawned the wave would make something like this totally worthwhile.

When I think of bonus objectives that are hard to do in MMO’s I always think of WoW’s Sartharion and his 3 drakes. Early on killing him and his 3 adds were tough in those first few months in Obsidian Sanctum. Reward success imo.

I do think hidden things in games should exist though. It’s a great feeling when stumbling across such things. I remember in SWTOR, everyone was looking for a way to uncover how to make that pink sabre crystal for like the first two months of the game. Word of mouth and guides kill it once it is found, but at least it keeps the communities engaged til the next piece of unknown info is installed.

Also [Teq] got it tonight accidentally while we failed defense event. The problem is not only event failure requirement. Only a few people can get achievement cause only 1 person can use jumping rad at a time and there is only handful of those pads

Hidden achievements can sometimes be awarded, but you don’t get the notification for it. For example, back when Speedy Reader was still a hidden achievement, I went through and read all the books, but didn’t get the achievement. I figured it was either bugged or removed, and went on with my GW2 life. When the achievement was finally brought back, I went back to Ebonhawke, only to discover that the achievement was already complete. So it DID award it when I did it last time, it just didn’t say anything.

I’ve tried to get this achievement, but even though I jumped the wave and lived, I still didn’t get it.

I also think any achievement that promotes group failure (opposed to individual failure) should really not exist.

It’s a hidden achievement exactly not to promote group failure.

Not to mention, it gives 0 achievement points so why get so worked up about it?

I got mine and was surprised and amused. Survived the wave and got rewarded with an awesome view and a reminder of that.

I don’t really see the issue. True enough, some fail it on purpose to get it, but it’s like saying others should be blamed for how we act. Some fail it on purpose just to troll – how’s that different? :\

Geez, this is a really hard achievement to get. Not only do you have to convince 100 players to stop defending the batteries (when you’re already losing), but then you gotta compete with them to use the jump pads.

Yeah. In any cooperative content, there should be only achievements that promote cooperation.

Those “do weird things” achievements should be on soloable content only.

Look, the problem in this case isn’t really with the achievement itself. I get it, it’s cool, it’s funny. It’s nice when you do something amazing and have a reminder of that, sure.

However, there are people calling out to fail the battery events, just to get this achievement. Saying “We’re going to fail anyway, let’s try to get the hidden achievement and fail the battery events.”

The problem with this, succeeding the battery event actually gives everyone who participated a reward. It might be minor, but it’s something. It’s just that tiny bit of incentive to perhaps get you doing your best the next time it comes around.
The idea of not doing the utmost best to get the dragon down as far as you can, that is hurting the overall event. In the worst cases, it means missing out on multiple dragon chests from the battery events, because failure is wanted.

Aside from the big organisational effort that is needed, the last thing that is needed is that you start arguing about whether or not you should fail the event. I personally think that thought shouldn’t even come to mind at all. Everyone is trying super hard at this event (some servers have more luck than others sure), there shouldn’t be the smallest incentive to let it fail at the most crucial moment. People are already saying enough that “We won’t make it.” and that it’s pointless to try, even without this achievement.
