Funny to log on getting to a overflows were we are like 40-70 man , 30% of them afk and we get teq always down to 98% YEAH ..

  • and i am not QQ´ing about the difficulty here , i actually like hard content just btw**

Aint seeing my home server any time soon .except I wait for some hours to get on my main server while them are afk waiting for the next teq spawn

Day 3 : Again a day pressing f12 and relog on the map , watch the overflow fail , switch to next one , oh he is down to 95% after 8 min , f12 and relog WOW this overflow got him down to 98% .

Day 4 : Bored of being an glasscanon thief because even if you dogde most of the attacks you cant do the same dps as other glass canons

Then it wasn’t a real overflow – one where you find random people, often afk, some of them on turrets, that aren’t even interested in some semblance of organization and that, sometimes, don’t even want to talk all the same language – english.

Some people are using some overflows as private instances, by finding some newly created ones and inviting people there. Basically, treating the whole encounter as a raid content.
That is, the way it should have been implemented from the beginning.

At least you can actually get into Deso – god knows how – ive been trying to get in to my home server ( Deso) for 3 days – I cant even get in at 4am waiting over an hour in the overflow – this is ridiculous.

Sorry wall of text incoming. My impressions after 4 evenings of trying to beat Tequatl (Borlis Pass).

Anet released the API and one of its great feature is that the community is able to make websites like gw2.thelazy.net that can warn us when an event is starting. So we’re able to waypoint there right away and take part. It’s great because we don’t have to wait in map during the spawn window or worst wait in map for it to spawn. (I remember when the game came out and I wanted to beat Shatterer for the first time… no website with timers! It sucked really.)

Here’s the problem with Tequatl if you’re using a website like this. Tequatl starts, you waypoint to Sparkfly, one of two things happen :
1 – Map is full, you fall in overflow, Tequatl is starting RIGHT NOW, overflow is underpopulated, people is unorganized, event fails eventually.
2 – Map is not full, you reach the main server but…. if the map isn’t full on prime time when the event just started it’s not because you’re the lucky last one to get in, it’s because the main server itself is underpopulated. Thus the event fails eventually.

Alright, so I can’t just waypoint there when it starts… what I’m I gonna do? I tried to waste my time waypointing up front of him spawning. After hours of waiting… maybe 1… maybe 2… 4… I finally get up on the main server. Sadly, Borlis Pass isn’t one of the server that managed to beat Tequatl so far. But even if the server was able to, I would have waited FOUR HOURS just to get that meagre chance of beating him.

I admit I did more efforts than I would want to normally to try to be there, complete this event using standard open world opt-in/opt-out mechanics in place and I wasted quite a lot of time just waiting to get on main server. I tried guesting too but was unlucky with that as well. My last resort would be to join a great group like TKS or TSS. I’m sure it would work that way, but I’d like to point out that Tequatl is an open world event. The goal of open world events is having many people coming and going as they like but that design doesn’t work with the current Tequatl’s encounter.

How the community is organizing itself right now is to face instanced raid content… in an open world event. That’s how Tequatl can be beaten. I think it’s wrong for many obvious reasons that other people already pointed out.

The event itself is great, the few times I managed to be part of a group that reached at least the 2nd phase, I could see how good that encounter is. The problem is the whole container of the event that was badly thought/executed. You used what you had in place to stuff a raid-like content inside and that wasn’t really appropriate.

For big events like this, there should be a in-game interface with a opt-in/opt-out feature. You can opt-in to be warned of Tequatl’s arrival. Once it’s time for the event, you get a popout in the corner saying “Tequatl is here! Join the Vigil in the upcoming fight!” and you have 30 seconds to click “Join” if you want to participate.

Once you click join, you get teleported (with your party if they wish) in a 100,150,200 people (whatever the number you want) instance until it’s filled up — it needs to be cross-servers too. Then you have a 2-3 minutes timer to pick your combat squad in a new interface : Western Turrets Defense, Eastern Turrets Defense, Attack Group A, Attack Group B, etc. Once you’re in your squad, you can see the clear objectives of your squad (like — Defend the turrets from the incoming risen.) and you can see their dots on the map too (it would be great!). Put a cap on different squads as well so we don’t end up with 100 people in Western Turrets Defense. It doesn’t prevent someone from East to run to the West group but I mean, it gives a little direction to new people upfront without requiring voice chat (which the game itself lacks and we must rely on third party software).

Once the timer ends up, the fight starts, with a full map of people that took the time to click join (so it weeds out some afk people), that are divided into groups with specific objectives and are overall inside a group that stands at least a chance at completing the event.

What if someone wants to join after it started? (say, someone logged in game 5 minutes after the start) Keep a “late arrival buffer cap” in each instance of 10ish people. That cap is exclusively for that kind of people to give them a chance to join a group that stands a chance even if they’re late. Or just don’t give them the opportunity to join. In any case, don’t waste people’s time by letting them joining an overflow lacking enough player to complete the content.

What if my whole guild want to participate together, parties are limited to 5-man teams! It’s time to add a new guild feature where the appropriately appointed guild members (via the current ranking system) can click join for his whole guild (and then all members online can confirm that they want to join as well). So they’re teleported together in the same instance (as long as the guild isn’t too big).

Once the event is done, since it’s an instance, you need to click the little house icon to get out. Yes however, we lose the whole effect of “Sparkfly’s coast is full of risen mouths exploding in the face of people.” but seriously, it’s not an element that makes the encounter fun, it’s only aesthetics. It gets rid of afkers that stay in the map after the event is done since the next encounter would be in a different instance.

TL;DR: My main gripe with the new Tequatl is that we need to camp the boss (YES! CAMPING a boss in Guild Wars 2… I can’t believe it myself) to be able to have a meagre chance at completing it OR be in a very organized big group (even then, they face many problems with logistics themselves as well I’m sure). I don’t want to waste long hours just waiting in-game to not be stuck in destined to fail overflows.

Overflow is the reason why some of my friends left this game, the other reason being the time to spare because of the updates every 2 weeks, if you’re in school or have a job and only have time to spare on saturday and sunday you have to rush the content, it’s even more embarrassing when you have other great games that came out like GTA V (it was this and Monster Hunter 4 from Japan for my friends) because rushing is frustrating and you’re supposed to experience, taste the new content slowly, take your time but you can’t. As for overflows, i really hate this kitten, it ruins the content and disgust you because you can’t experience it in good conditions, there’s people of every countries in overflows and sometimes communication is not possible, worse is that it will turn into a conflict between people of different countries (Frenchs vs Englishs vs Germans lol ).

If you can use the LFG tool already, go to another map (you must be on your server, not overflow), post a group invite saying “I need someone to ferry me to the main server for Teq” (if there are no groups ferrying people already), go to Sparkfly Fen and wait.

Once that someone on your server get you in their party, spam join until you get it.

I’m from TC and I never spend more than 20 minutes on an overflow anymore, since I started being able to use the LFG tool yesterday.

I can see the problems with overflow in events like Tequatl. I had similar problems couldn’t get into my own server Sparkfly zone cause of so many ppl and had to join overflows with maybe 30-40 with no chance to success.

This morning went camping to my main server so I have chances to be with organized group and it worked. It’s just silly though that you have to camp to get place to be with ppl who can succeed in this event.

You are practically doomed to fail if you log in afternoon or something like that. Maybe if you get really lucky one overflow might success defeating but that’s not very likely.

In few other MMO’s with world bosses there wasnt these overflows, whole servers with hundreds of players together on world boss. That gave all chance to participate and didnt leave anyone out. But I guess GW2 engine has limitations to get that happen.

So half the people on here are complaining that there are too many people to get into a main server… and the other half are complaining that their main servers aren’t populated enough to finish the event…

novel idea here…. why don’t you both stop complaining and instead team up? If you are constantly being kicked to overflow then pick a less populated server to guest on to complete it. Even the lower pop servers have guilds and TS.

Glass cannon is useless unless you’re dealing with the spawns that attack the cannons. You can’t crit a boss or an object, so precision & crit damage are useless. Conditions are equally useless for different reasons (stack limit).

If you’re attacking the boss, there’s no reason to be in anything but soldier’s gear (P/V/T) in a power build. Cleric’s gear also doesn’t work well, because Taco doesn’t have a lot of skills that hurt people, only ones that insta-gib people, so healing doesn’t help.

Sadly, only power, toughness, and vitality have any impact on the direct fight whatsoever. Even if you’re on spawn duty, those same stats are useless for the ever-present “fingers”, as they cannot be critted or condition-ed.

And i just found out, that for the meta achievment you have to participate teq. Hum. imagine, you have RL. You watch the timer, join the server – and go to overflow. Hum. You miss Teq.

It sounds like a good advice and I’m kind of willing to try it out over the weekend. However, I find that a bit complex to solve an issue with the game. So, I need to get on my server in another map than Sparkfly, because I need not fall in overflow, and from that other map make/join a LFG invite for Tequatl — hoping to get a good invite actually, it’s not a certainty at all. And I still have to wait for my request to be filled. So I still need to organize myself in advance to not miss the event. It might work well actually, but I have my reserves about going out of my way like this to circumvent a flaw with the design. I shouldn’t have to do this.

Tell me, did you manage to complete the event by using this method?

If I have to organize a group before hand, it should be instanced. As a player, I shouldn’t have to find a solution to circumvent game mechanics that are failing to be able to experience the content as designed and to enjoy a fun experience. Mechanics should be in place to facilitate our gaming experience not hinder it.

You can have my spot. I made a new club called “The Making More Spaces in Overflow Club”. After multiple attempts at this I just decided it wasn’t worth it and moved on doing my usual thing. I’ll let everyone else bang their heads against their monitors.

Basically this part of the forum is 1) A smaller group of people that got in early, at the right time, and lucky with the right people. These are the ones telling people how great and awesome the event is and how elite and hardcore they are. 2) Everyone else that has spent days in crappy overflows that never even get anything done due to AFK and generally people not caring. Or on low population servers where everyone has guested to more populated servers and causing even more of a problem with overflow.

Actually my new club is, I no longer give a kitten about seeing a dragon get killed. I’ll just watch it on Youtube club.

I gave up on Tequatl because of the perma-overflow problem. What’s annoying are the people who have gotten into the main servers. They insult everyone who can’t get in because all of those players must be required to download 3rd party software (such as TS so you can beg random people for a spot), must be newbies because they aren’t in a giant/hardcore guild, or are dumb for having a life that prevents them from waiting 12 hours for an opening.

This fight fails at its implementation because they abandoned one of the best features of Guild Wars 2 PvE; Scaling. This is the second time they’ve done this in a recent boss implementation.

This fight has one fixed power level. So once you master all the mechanics it boils down to a DPS wall. If your server has the DPS, you win. If your server doesn’t have the DPS you lose. Your mastery of the fight has nothing to do with it. In other MMOs this fight would require a gear check to make sure you were contributing DPS.

I won’t even mention how the last two boss fights implemented by the boss team, completely ignore boss psychology and even the basic rule of three. Stick to the fundamentals, this even applies to MMORPG boss design.

And yes waiting 4 hours just to be in your server’s kill window is the dumbest thing I’ve ever had to do since I’ve started playing this game. I could be doing other things I enjoy like WvW, or other bosses. We’ve all seen the rewards for this fight, and once I grab all the achievements, I’m done with it. This fight is not worth the loss of general time especially with WvW leagues coming up.

To make myself feel better about the loss of Tequatl, I’ve already replaced him with Mega Destroyer in my daily boss farm.

4.5hrs overflow on my bday… Then, can’t even invite guildys in party over, cause map full.
Then AFK people on turrets. Aswell as dead on ground.

I think the best yet, was in a overflow. Saying that after bone wall came up 6 times, that your life’s got to be pretty bad if your so sad that the only power you get is to get on GW2 and make there life a little bit bad too by Akitteng on the turrets deliberately.
Only to have them all say, they are all reporting me for abuse, and Akitteng on a turret isn’t abuse.

I’ve bought 6 friends a copy of this game. None of them play, and I can’t recommend they even come check this new stuff out…

Like the OP I want to be part of some difficult large scale events but whenever I enter Sparkfly I’m in an overflow that hardly ever scratches the boss. I want to find something to like, to learn tactics, to get any optimism about this dragon at all, but it hasn’t happened. It isn’t ever going to happen in overflows, especially European overflows with players using another language.

Also like the OP, I play a thief and all these adds coming to attack the cannons just make me want to never play thief again. Exploding plague bringers, ok, but surely not so many, not mixed in with mobs that pull and root, not champion plague bringers, not also krait that explode on low health with no warning animation. Adds can spawn behind you and instantly use their roots and pulls so that’s not fun either. All the explosions and damage fields make high hp classes the best cannon users too. Low hp classes (without invulnerability) might as well not bother.

I. like many people, have given up on getting anywhere in this achievement.

I hear many people tell me it’s fun, I hear about the great drops they get, I even listen on mumble and can hear the fun they are having.

Sadly I am not as I am stuck forever in overflow, banished to try and enjoy a shadow of a game because the makers of GW2 are idiots and have no idea on how to scale their servers for the content that they slop out to the punters.

Teq is now on the list of useless content that this once great game is now producing.

Sadly if you want to join the event and not get in overflow. At the moment you need to join the map on your home server right after the event ends. Or you will need to get on our servers voice com and request a party invite then use the join in feature.

Mechanics are in place to facilitate your experience. There is a lfg tool, the ability to join 5 different guilds used for different purposes, and guesting. All these mechanics have been put in place to help you find ways to work together to achieve your goal.

Yeah, because joining a guild just so you can kill a dragon is a nice way to compensate the horrible system that Arenanet place. Yeah, this is definitely a repeat of the Guild Mission that was place when it was first release. What if I, and many other players, does not want to join another guild? What if some players already hit their 5 guild cap? All it does is cheapen the guild system even more.

Mechanics are in place to facilitate your experience. There is a lfg tool, the ability to join 5 different guilds used for different purposes, and guesting. All these mechanics have been put in place to help you find ways to work together to achieve your goal.

The LFG does not work when you are in overflow, joining another guild just to kill the dragon cheapen the value of the guild system, and guesting is one of the priority reason why many of the native players are in overflow. The system is there, but its horribly done.

It is currently nigh impossible to get on main servers, unless you get up at 5 am and stay there half the day, until said boss dies. Most of the time in GW2 you spend on waiting, then have the lovely error messages.. It is a nightmare.

There is certainly no written rule about this but don’t you think it’s a little bit counter intuitive? One example of why it is :
One server gets organized and has the luck to be fully in his home server (somewhat a feat already). They’re preparing at least one or two hours (well or maybe more actually when it’s prime time) in advance, for many different reasons, and a couple of minutes after arrival, they realize one guy is AFK on a west turret because he won’t answer PMs nor move. So what to do?
Either A) Wait until he gets disconnected or leaves or B) Find another server.
If they chose A), and somehow that AFK guy comes back every 15 minutes to see if Teq has arrived (resetting auto-kick timer) and goes away again, won’t see or won’t bother with PMs effectively hindering the organized group attempt and finally won’t show up to man the turret while the event starts for whatever reason (thus having to let the afk person die to mobs when they spawn to reclaim the turret).
If they chose B), one of them needs to reconnect, to fall into overflow, to check if it seems suitable for their attempt, to make the whole group from the main server join his party 4 people at a time (but then once more people join, more can join too) and to be successful in getting his message across the entire group (which almost requires third party voice communications software since there’s none in-game and no alliance system like GW1).

Don’t you agree that it’s crazy having to do all this to have a chance to succeed? And there are many other examples that could be given that could generate the same situation. An instanced fight wouldn’t have these problems.

Don’t you agree that it’s crazy having to do all this to have a chance to succeed? And there are many other examples that could be given that could generate the same situation. An instanced fight wouldn’t have these problems.

Well I certainly agree the turrets need a solution. There are other threads about that though.

The simple fact is that there are multiple ways to coordinate and win, and if you want to do so you will find a way. I have killed Teq every night for the past 4 nights now, just by asking around, talking to people, and figuring out where the bigger guilds are doing the event. I don’t even belong to those guilds and I still get in by cooperating, not whining, showing a willingness to learn and following instructions.

Same problem for me ._. I have 3 hours each day for play Gw2 and I have to spend ALL of them in Sparkfly Fen, trying to arrive in my server for a chance to beat Tequatl, totally impossibile in ovwrflow, where I spend avery single minute I can stay on Gw2 :\

Really, Anet should do something for this problem.

Not hard to get into main server if you are from the server and group up.

I agree with the OP. This event is a huge failure when sitting in what has become the game’s largest PUG. With a 1/3rd of them AFK and a 1/3rd of them not knowing the proper tactics for taking down the dragon.

This hasn’t been one of ArenaNet’s best Living Story pieces, that is for sure.

why don’t you both stop complaining and instead team up?

It’s an open world event. We shouldn’t have to do anything else other than waypoint to the event to participate and then have a chance at completing the content.
If I have to organize a group before hand, it should be instanced. As a player, I shouldn’t have to find a solution to circumvent game mechanics that are failing to be able to experience the content as designed and to enjoy a fun experience. Mechanics should be in place to facilitate our gaming experience not hinder it.

You shouldn’t have to gimmick your way into an event through back doors. An event should be accessible by everyone.

I know there are different ways to get around the problem but the problem I’m pointing at is that we need to use a way to get around. (well many of us actually but not all)
How many hours per day in average are you devoting to your Tequatl kill? Including the event, preparation and waiting? And how many hours have you devoted the first time around including the research to find the right way for you? Because the first time certainly took you more time to do so than the others.

I shall say that it’s not only overflows. All that you list is true as well. But overflows can be a liability too.

All of this could be solved if the fight is presented in a different package. Except maybe trolls, that is quite hard to anticipate. People gets creative with grieving sometimes.

Come to IOJ. Now that everybody has beaten it, nobody cares. Now me and 3 other people are the only ones stuck in the world. 3 people. THREE PEOPLE.
