Kick AFK Players
AFK players DO get kicked from the map. All they have to do is “jump” or move a bit every 10 – 15 minutes to stay on the map, but you cannot force a player to actively participate in the event.
We have to force a player to actively participate in the event. Just because some lazy kitten wanna be afk, hundreds of players cannot enter the main server.
And AFK players DO get kicked from the map, if they don’t do some stuff in 45 minutes. I want Anet to decrease this timer.
It’s unlikely they’ll decrease the timer because there might be people AFK for legitimate reasons. Unfortunately we’ll just have to deal (and suffer) with it. AFKers/griefers are something they refuse to incorporate into the equation when it comes to events/items.
Don’t support the Gem Shop, it’s that easy.
I have to state that 45mins is inaccurate – I know of people who have sat for an hour, at least, afk and not been kicked without moving a hair. They really do need to lower the idle timer. That won’t force people to be active but it would force them to be more deliberate and clearly worthy of wrath.
They just need to implement some kind of client challenge, say 5 minutes before Tequatl starts, i.e. popping up a window requesting players to click on one of the randomly chosen images (something like Fancy CAPTCHA – http://www.webdesignbeach.com/beachbar/ajax-fancy-captcha-jquery-plugin).
If the challenge is completed successfully during a given time (i.e. 4 minutes) player gets to stay on map, if not he/she gets kicked out of the map making room for people from the overflow to join. Yes it might seem a bit like a hassle but AFK-ers are a real problem on Tequatl because most of them are simply after achievements.

I have been akitten LA for 15 minutes and been kicked before. When you afk at Teq, you get attacked and ressed which resets the timer each time. If they just kicked everyone off the map a minute before the event started that could help people get in easier and remove the afk people :P
Easy solution: those who are AFK (for whatever number of minutes) when the zone fills up get booted into overflow.
Why so many stupid “solutions”? It’s not the AFK players that are the problem. It’s because the event is scaled in a rather terrible way, requiring too many to have a decent chance at downing him within the time limit. Don’t fight the symptoms, fight the source.
AFK players are ONE of the problems which must be fixed.
My idea was to emergency teleport everyone in the disaster zone OUT of the region (at least whatever radius scales the Tequatl fight), and then provide jump pads for people to get back to the fight just prior to the dragon landing to get back into position. Then AFK people aren’t contributing to the scaling, the people who are in the fight are there because they’re actively participating.
I’ve found it a little weird that the only way to get clean fights is for folks to deliberately SEEK OUT overflow servers. The serious fight rarely seems to happen on the main server — it’s always somewhere else, because the participation is difficult to control otherwise.
I don’t believe any of the above will solve the problem of AFK players. I’ve seen people running into the side of a wall dodging for great lengths of time. People are always trying to find ways around the AFK functions – I’ve seen some creative ones in WvW…
It is something that the mains get hard capped. Says something about the event and how many want to play it.
How about this:
If you are going to be AFK then go AWAY from the turrets and Teq spawn area. There are plenty of WPs on the map that are safe to Akitten and won’t scale up the event if you are a kitten and forget to come back in time.
