I’ve seen alot of hate threats about tequatl and also some threads voting in favor of the newly revamped boss. I just want to share my opinions here and cast my vote. I’ll try to keep it as short as I can:

I think that this new content is a step in the right direction but does need some major changes:

Positives:

Unlike the other boss fights, this fight actually feels like a boss fight. Instead of just standing where everybody else is auto attacking the same thing until the red bar goes down and you get your reward, this boss fight actually requires a lot of Teamwork and Coordination* and it feels alot more special when you actually defeat the boss because he is so difficult to beat. This content has brought me much closer to the Guild Wars 2 community through having to group up and use teamspeak and work as a large team with over 80 other players. Sometimes even more which is great.

I think that the variety of attacks that Tequatl has are not only visually interesting but very interactive which is awesome. I love the mini tidal wave he creates when he slams his claws into the water and how you can jump over it to avoid its damage. I think each boss should have attacks like that because they’re awesome and alot more exciting. It gives you another reason to play the content instead of just playing it for the loot and achievements.

Negatives:

I think that the overflow system is the biggest major flaw in relation to this boss battle. I’m sure by now everyone has been stuck in an overflow and knows just how difficult and frustrating it can be to get out of it. Sometimes an overflow is able to defeat Tequatl but it seems that most of the time they stand absolutely no chance. It can take up to and hour and a half to get out of overflow which is ridiculous and most people simply wont have time to wait that long.

Now since it seems highly unlikely that Anet will be able to change the overflow system, I’d suggest modifying the difficulty of Tequatl instead. I remember reading somewhere that
Guild Wars 2 features a system whereby some enemies like champions and bosses, scale in difficulty depending on how many players are present to fight them. The Tequatl boss fight requires at least 80-100 people to have a chance of beating him. I think that if the difficulty was more accurately scaled based on the number of people participating in the event, it would be equally difficult (in theory) for people to defeat him regardless of the numbers of people participating however you’d need a base amount of 50-60 people in order to defeat him so that 4 or 5 people couldn’t solo him alone. Also perhaps consider increasing the timer by a small amount since many organized servers have failed the event by fractions of a second.

At present, the rewards aren’t great enough to justify defeating Tequatl again once a player has gotten all of the achievements. It becomes just a huge waste of time and only those players seeking the thrill and enjoyment of a real challenge will be left fighting Tequatl.

Another negative that I’d like to mention is the pace at which Anet releases their living world content. 2 weeks is simply not enough time to get through the content and once the content is gone, you’ve missed your chance. I think it should be bigger content patches released monthly instead.

All of this is of course my own opinion and thoughts on the new content.
Any suggestions I’ve made are fully open to criticism be it constructive or destructive.
Thanks for reading!

This should have been a new dragon or boss. Why, after a year, did they make already existing content harder? Why wouldn’t they make new permanent bosses that are more challenging, while making the game broader? Why wouldn’t they add to the appeal the game already has?

I totally agree with the original poster.

Have I beaten Tequatl? Yes.

Will I do him again? No, not under the current circumstances. Waiting hours in an overflow that doesn’t care to even try and win is not my idea of fun.

And the loot is pitiful when compared to the effort.
